Interaction with guests

Simon Munro Kerr, the owner of La Jarilla runs both the guest accommodation and the certified organic farm, producing in their various seasons, figs, almonds, grapes and olives. The figs are not harvested commercially but are available to all guest between late August and late September. The almonds, harvested from some 3000 trees are collected on a commercial basis and sold to the local cooperative between September and November. The grapes, of which there are six varieties (Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Macabeo, Pedro Ximenez and Verdejo varieties) are picked at the end of September. Firstly the red, which has to mature in vats for a week before being pressed and thereafter the whites. Both are collected in the morning by a team of 6 to 8 people from the local village. The olives are harvested at the end of November and milled in one batch in the local organic mill. La Jarilla wine and olive oil is on sale to the guests, who may participate in any of the harvests, should they so wish.

The neighborhood

Cortijo La Jarilla is set on the southern slopes of the sierra de la Contraviesa, 80kms south of Granada and 13kms north of the Mediterranean coast. La Jarilla sits squarely between two typical white mountain villages, Alfornon and Sorvilan, both of which have their own shops and bars and are within walking distance. In addition, there is a network of unlimited walks in all directions, radiating from La Jarilla. The Cortijo is also an excellent point of departure for exploring the picturesque landscape, villages of the Alpujarras and attractive beaches of the Motril coast, of which six are within a 40 minute drive. The Sierra Nevada range of mountains are two hours’ drive to the north of La Jarilla, where there is a well establish ski resort that was started in 1964 and boast more than 100 kms of pistes of all levels and various hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs, which are enjoyed by skiers during the season, usually December to March. There are two golf courses within an hour of La Jarilla, one at Motril and the other at Santa Clara, just south of Granada.

Getting around

The Cortijo can be reached by car, and by helicopter, as there is a helipad.
