Close to the airport, Disneyland, Tai O, the Big Buddha, and one of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong with several restaurants and bars in walking distance, this place has everything - except lots of space. But you'll be outdoors exploring!
Do you want to get away from the screaming frenzy of Hong Kong, but still be near enough to access the city easily? Do you like beautiful scenery and quiet nights? Then come and stay in beautiful Pui O on Lantau Island!
Please read through the whole thing so we don't have to exchange emails backwards and forwards. NO, you don't have to share the space with anyone.
The place is not big, but it has everything. WiFi, microwave, fridge, toaster, coffee maker, full dinner set for 4, beautiful bathroom. NEW ADDITIONS: Toaster oven and rice cooker! Towels, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner; all that.
Can sleep 3. You also get the use of your very own Nokia mobile with a Hong Kong number!
4 minutes' walk from Pui O Beach, 40 seconds from bus, taxi. Taxi to Tung Chung (metro) 15 minutes. Taxi to Mui Wo (ferry pier) 7 minutes. Bus to Tung Chung 25 minutes, to Mui Wo 10 minutes.
It is close to all the tourist attractions on Lantau: The Big Buddha, Tai O, about 30 minutes from Disneyland and of course the airport as well as the Convention Centre. Hiking trail starts 2 minutes' walk up the road.
The house is in a quiet village with lots of beautiful hiking terrain. There are water buffaloes and you'll be woken by birdsong every morning. There are several restaurants in the area as well as two bars: The JK Club and Tap Tap Spanish tapas bar. Cheung Sha Beach, 25 minutes' walk away, is crawling with restaurants.
I speak the local language; in fact I'm a Cantonese teacher, so if you have any linguistic problems just text me on the phone provided and I'll see what I can do.
There is an ironing board and iron. I will wash your clothes and air dry them, 2 day service.
If you stay for only a weekend I'm afraid it will be HK$700 a night, but for weekly stays or longer, the price above stands.
Welcome to Pui O and a truly lovely house with a fun and culturally resourceful host.
P.S. The map is not right! It's in PUI O, up some steps from the South Lantau Road.
Many people ask me if they'll have to share the space with other people. Of course not! The studio is separate from the rest of the house.
Interaction with Guests
I'm normally at work but if anyone wants to go to a local bar (four minutes' walk) I'm all for it!
Pui O is a lovely village, especially around the beach and the forests. There are little shops where you can buy snacks and drinks, as well as several restaurants - including Thai. The people are very friendly and helpful.
The place is 20 minutes from the airport, has lots of dining possibilities in walking distance and is only 40 minutes away from Central (by bus and ferry).
Other Things to Note
Check-in at 1pm, check-out at 11am. Sorry if I can't always leave a review for you - I normally don't meet the guests except fleetingly and have people to clean after your stay, so I don't see what it looks like.
Turn off the aircon, fan and hot water when you're not at home.
The room can sleep 3, as there's one single bed, ONE SOFA BED (and one couch fold-able mattress but then there will be no free floor space).
No late night parties (without me) please! It's no noise after 23:00 in the village.
Cecilie was one of the best hosts I've had the pleasure of staying with. Some things went wrong with the shower and toilet, and she was so on the ball with getting them fixed. She gave us both a lot of privacy, while also giving us all the info we needed to get around and any and all help we needed. What was really cool was that she remembered the minor details; we were in Lantau for a race and she left us a good luck note the night before.
The space itself was exactly as represented in the pictures. Really near the beautiful stretches of beaches, and the amazing (and really tough!) trails. Good food a few minutes walk away, with a 10 minute bus to Mui Wo (ferry town) and about 15 min to Tung Chung (outlet + bus terminal)
We were comfortable because we're both relatively tiny people but it may be a bit tight if you're really tall/on the larger side. Comfortable bed and furniture, great bathroom. Lassie (the dog) was a big highlight of our time here and greeted us every day. She is very friendly! Her other dog (whose name I still can't spell) barks when you come home but is a big softie at heart. As a dog lover this was what made this stay really awesome.
Cecilie, thank you for a great 5 days in Pui O! We really enjoyed our time and were glad to see a different side of HK. Please stay in touch if you're ever in Singapore :)
We enjoyed staying in the little neighbourhood. Cecilie's place is very quiet and cosy. We managed to have a good rest, and i caught up on a lot of reading. We made dinner in the little flat, and went walking around the beach and the mountains. She is a great host. When I broke her showerhead during our stay (great bathroom btw), her maid provided great help and reassurance. I'm certain that you will enjoy your time there.
A no-frills place near the beach, fine for a night or two, tucked away with buildings on all sides.
There is lots of stuff to wash dishes with in the bathroom, in a blue bowl on the floor. There is washing-up liquid, a dishtowel on the shelf below the microwave oven and a washing-up brush. I'm sorry about the difficulty you had turning on the shower (the switch for the hot water is on the wall outside the bathroom). Instead of telling me after they have left, I hope future guests will ask me if they have any questions, while they're actually there. I provide a phone with a HK number for this very purpose.
Cecilie was very nice hostess and there were free bottles of juice.
But the room smelled like dog shit and terrible location.
Cecile Gamst Berg was for me the ideal host, fully respecting my need for privacy and offering a clean quiet and compact living space with an exceptionally large and welcome bathroom - I should point out that I'm a 69 year old semi-retired Australian TV writer/director mainly Singapore-based, so the situation suited me perfectly....
This is a wonderful place if you are looking for a place to relax in Hong Kong without the city noise. It is in a remote area away from metropolitan Hong Kong. Cecille's studio is actually bigger than I expected. The place is clean and comfortable. Pubs, convenient stores, and several restaurants are just few steps away. It was nice for Cecilie to provide a local phone. That comes handy for calling for a local taxi. Yes, I will recommend Cecilie's place to others that wanted to be in the "countryside" of Hong Kong!
My stay in Cecilies Studio was great. The place was clean and had everything I needed. The bed was comfortable and there was a friendly dog who greeted me when I was leaving or coming back. The beach is just a short walk away and there are several bus lines stoping near the house. They will bring you everywhere on the island within 10 to 30 minutes, including Muy Wo where the ferry to Central Hong Kong leaves. I met Cecilie just briefly but the contact through e-mail and sms was good and her description to find the place is great. Big recommendation.
