About this listing
Close to the airport, Disneyland, Tai O, the Big Buddha, and one of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong with several restaurants and bars in walking distance, this place has everything - except lots of space. But you'll be outdoors exploring!
Do you want to get away from the screaming frenzy of Hong Kong, but still be near enough to access the city easily? Do you like beautiful scenery and quiet nights? Then come and stay in beautiful Pui O on Lantau Island!
Please read through the whole thing so we don't have to exchange emails backwards and forwards. NO, you don't have to share the space with anyone.
The place is not big, but it has everything. WiFi, microwave, fridge, toaster, coffee maker, full dinner set for 4, beautiful bathroom. NEW ADDITIONS: Toaster oven and rice cooker! Towels, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner; all that.
Can sleep 3. You also get the use of your very own Nokia mobile with a Hong Kong number!
4 minutes' walk from Pui O Beach, 40 seconds from bus, taxi. Taxi to Tung Chung (metro) 15 minutes. Taxi to Mui Wo (ferry pier) 7 minutes. Bus to Tung Chung 25 minutes, to Mui Wo 10 minutes.
It is close to all the tourist attractions on Lantau: The Big Buddha, Tai O, about 30 minutes from Disneyland and of course the airport as well as the Convention Centre. Hiking trail starts 2 minutes' walk up the road.
The house is in a quiet village with lots of beautiful hiking terrain. There are water buffaloes and you'll be woken by birdsong every morning. There are several restaurants in the area as well as two bars: The JK Club and Tap Tap Spanish tapas bar. Cheung Sha Beach, 25 minutes' walk away, is crawling with restaurants.
I speak the local language; in fact I'm a Cantonese teacher, so if you have any linguistic problems just text me on the phone provided and I'll see what I can do.
There is an ironing board and iron. I will wash your clothes and air dry them, 2 day service.
If you stay for only a weekend I'm afraid it will be HK$700 a night, but for weekly stays or longer, the price above stands.
Welcome to Pui O and a truly lovely house with a fun and culturally resourceful host.
P.S. The map is not right! It's in PUI O, up some steps from the South Lantau Road.
Many people ask me if they'll have to share the space with other people. Of course not! The studio is separate from the rest of the house.
Interaction with Guests
I'm normally at work but if anyone wants to go to a local bar (four minutes' walk) I'm all for it! Lasi the friendly and kind dog will welcome you when you arrive. She lives in the corridor outside your room.
Pui O is a lovely village, especially around the beach and the forests. There are little shops where you can buy snacks and drinks, as well as several restaurants - including Thai. The people are very friendly and helpful.
The place is 20 minutes from the airport, has lots of dining possibilities in walking distance and is only 40 minutes away from Central (by bus and ferry).
Other Things to Note
Check-in at 1pm, check-out at 11am. Sorry if I can't always leave a review for you - I normally don't meet the guests except fleetingly and have people to clean after your stay, so I don't see what it looks like.
Turn off the aircon, fan and hot water when you're not at home.
The room can sleep 3, as there's one single bed, ONE SOFA BED (and one couch fold-able mattress but then there will be no free floor space).
No late night parties (without me) please! It's no noise after 23:00 in the village.
Our stay was good.
The description is accurate and was a simple but comfortable place to stay.
Directions to the apartment (emailed from Cecilie) were good and we found it easily.
Cecilie was very helpful: we got caught in a typhoon, unable to get a taxi back home but she helped us out.
We were in HK for a busy conference so couldn't really explore or enjoy the surroundings but with one brief walk to the beach I could see that it is a very beautiful and quiet spot. Well recommended as a balance for a respite after a busy day out downtown!
Just a few notes for travellers:
FOOD SHOPPING: Although there are restaurants in that area shopping is sparse on that side of the island; you need to buy stuff elsewhere and bring it.
TAXIS: They are great, and cheap (compared to Japan!) --- but if you travel by taxi you need the BLUE (Lantau) taxis; they are fairly easy to call from the apartment side of the island but from the AP and other locations you might be waiting for sometime. Take the cellphone that Cecilie lends you and call them to book. Be prepared to wait.
Have a great trip!
Cecilie gave us lots of privacy but was very friendly and helpful. The studio was well-equipped and comfortable. Pui O was quite quiet but made for the perfect place to relax. Try High Tide at nearby Cheung Sha beach for yummy Thai.
The whole trip was a disaster. I 100% advise against staying here. We had the following issues:
- She mentioned a dog in the advert, but failed to mention that the dog and the food bowl live right outside the room. This means that the room stinks throughout the whole stay. There is no escaping the smell
- Hot water lasts 5 minutes max
- Bed wasn't put together or made so we had to sort on arrival
I was willing to overlook these issues to an extent if it weren't for the rudeness of the host. On the last day at 11:30am we have her banging on the door screaming at us that we should have left 20 minutes ago. This is the first we had seen of her and were unaware the check out was so strict as we had heard nothing from her about check out.
We were about to leave as she started her tirade of abuse. It was completely unacceptable to be spoken to in this way especially seeing as we were leaving, we had been good guests so far and we were simply 20min behind schedule (hardly a real issue for her). When we tried to explain to her that we were sorry and leaving anyway she continued shouting in an aggressive manner. This was the first time we had seen or spoken with her and to have her aggressively shouting at us over such a small issue is disgusting.
After we left she continued to email us saying that we were in the wrong. She has since contacted us to say that she was wrong to be so rude to us, but she has not apologised or made up for the fact the room smells so much of dog.
We are very laid back people and would not normally ever leave a bad review. We weren't going to mention the numerous issues with the water, dog smell or bed as we couldn't be bothered at first. But her whole attitude and rudeness has prompted us to let others know that the whole experience of staying with Cecilie is a joke.
Thank you very much for your constructive criticism. The bed wasn't ready when you arrived because the last guest (or the one before) had broken it and I thought it best to wait for the glue to dry before you used it. I did indeed knock on the door but I certainly didn't "scream." It was well past 12 when you left. I freely admit getting angry when, instead of saying sorry for holding up the room, you wouldn't even let the cleaner in to get the towels and bedclothes to get the room ready for the next guest arriving at 1pm. I have since had the opportunity to ask 19 different people if they could smell anything in the room and corridor, dog or otherwise, but they all said no. I suppose my rudeness (asking you to stick to the stated check-out time of 11) enhanced your olfactory senses. I have learnt a lot from this experience, and thank you for breaking your very laid-back rule of not commenting negatively.
Quiet, clean room with a spacious toilet. Room is equipped with a small fridge, microwave oven, toaster oven, small foldable table and clothes stand.
Location is convenient for travelling around Lantau Island by bus. Pui O beach is a short walk away. Only problem we had was finding non-restaurant options for food in the late evenings.
Cecilie replied promptly to queries about the apartment and helped us to meet our needs. Directions to the house were clear too. Note that there are a number of steps leading to the apartment, hence it may be a little inconvenient if you have heavy trolley luggage.
Love the dog that guards the apartment and greets us whenever we return.
Overall a good place for a short 2-night's stay.
Cecile was great and very helpful. Her place has all you need including the plug adaptors and a phone if you need one to call a cab or her. Sje was very helpful with directions and we enjoyed are stay!
Cecilie's house is the perfect place if you are looking for a retreat close to the beach. It is very well located between Tung Chung and Mui Wo's ferry terminal. Great place, nice and clean. The dog at the entrance, Lassie makes the place feel like home.
Cecilie was helpful with maps and assistants to make sure our stay was enjoyable. We were even given a small electronics converter (which we forgot to bring) within moments of asking for one. Very enjoyable experience.
