Our large home is modern and architect-designed to make best use of the sun. We are up on a hillside, with superb views and sunsets, looking across Nelson Haven and Port Nelson to the western ranges, and out to Tasman Bay. We have 3 king/queen bedrooms and one double bedroom, a big and sunny living room with good AV equipment, satellite, 50" TV and great view. Outside there are decks, terraces and BBQ for outdoor living, a spa and sauna. There is car parking on site.
The house is well furnished with plenty of local art, and is full of items we have collected in our travels around the world. We have a good library of books on travel and other subjects. We have broadband wireless internet.
Nelson is a great base for many activities. Temperature is warm in summer and mild in winter, with more sunshine than anywhere else in New Zealand. It is a safe and small city (40,000 population) (email hidden)ly outdoor café culture and lots of places to walk or hike. Nelson region is known for its art, wine, food and outdoor activities.
In June 2009, Nelson was voted one of the top three "most charming small towns in the world" by TripAdvisor - a website with 15 million viewers per week.
Many of our exchangers and AirBnBers have told us that our home is the best they have exchanged to, both for the house and the location of Nelson.
We are very close to the centre of Nelson, up on a rise looking out over Tasman Bay. We have Nelson's Japanese Gardens and Founders Heritage Park just below us. The centre of town is an easy walk away, with dozens of excellent cafes, restaurants, supermarkets and good shopping. There is a great art/craft/produce market in Montgomery Square on Saturday mornings and a farmers' market each Wednesday afternoon.
We are within 2 hours drive of FOUR National Parks including New Zealand's favourite Abel Tasman NP, a ski field (in season), the Marlborough Sounds, fascinating Golden Bay, the gold sand of Kaiteriteri beach, many wineries and art/craft galleries. There are wine and art/craft tours around the Waimea Plains. Wellington is only half an hour away by air if you want to see Te Papa Museum or go to a play, concert or sports event.
Nelson has three major festivals each year. The Summer Festival (jazz, performances, sculpture) starts on New Year's Day. The School of Music Winter Festival runs in July, and the Nelson Arts Festival (art/performance/theatre/music) takes place in October.
If you like outdoor activities, the Nelson region offers just about everything - walks, hiking, 4 golf courses close by, kayaking, sailing, swimming, sports, moutainbiking, skiing and more. You can even walk or mountainbike in the countryside just 100 metres from our house! The region is full of cycle trails.
Our home is near the centre of Nelson (20 minutes walk or 3 minutes drive from the centre), and only 5 minutes by car from the closest beach. Nelson City is very easy to get round, either by foot, cycle or car.

We were met by John & Karen at their home. They are lovely welcoming people & their gorgeous home is even more so. As 3 couples travelling together, we loved all being able to have a queen bed. Plus the space to get away from each other. That said, even more appreciated was the opportunity to then come together for meals etc. This is a comfortable home with fantastic views over the water. Everything you could possibly need is available. John & Karen leave a very informative folder of information about their home & surrounding area...it was well read by us all. We found the local pub, The Sprig & Fern, along with the fish & chip shop next door to it, as recommended by Karen. What a great place & then a nice walk back home to burn off some of those calories. We would most definitely recommend John & Karen's home to anyone interested in coming to lovely Nelson. Thank you to you both for making us feel so welcome.
We really enjoyed the spectacular panoramic water views from the house and watching those beautiful sunsets from the decks in the evenings. The design of the house was very spacious with views from every room and very private. The kitchen is fully equipped. We loved all the exotic artwork from John and Karen's travels.
John and Karen were a delightful couple with whom we seemed to share a lot of common interests.

The pictures don't even do it justice. The house and views are *amazing.* You can walk down the hill to the Spring and Fern (New Zealand's Best Bar).
Great, comfortable home that was central to everything we needed in Nelson. Very cool place to stay with amazing views!
John and Karen were very informative hosts, they have a list of great local restaurant suggestions and even a trail run for my husband.
