Tranquil, beautiful, and comfortable, solar adobe home. Bedroom suite with private bath and private entrance, next to the river. Hot tub and infrared sauna. A peaceful retreat for personal renewal.
In home suite on the banks of the Chama River, in a beautiful passive solar adobe home. The home blends ancient building techniques with modern design. The fusion is gracious, innovative, and comfortable. Abiquiu abounds with walking and biking trails, some to petroglyphs and Anasazi ruins, others through worlds of Red Rock cliffs, balancing rocks and white tuffa formations. Let the river murmur as you fall asleep on the luxurious pillow top queen bed. Soak in the hot tub while looking at the stars. You are welcome to share the great room and to use the well appointed kitchen. You can schedule an appointment for healing body work in the glass house at the river's edge. The lack of TV reception encourages you to free yourself from the demands of the electronic world. (WiFi and a landline are available for those who need to or wish to stay connected.) Children are welcomed and provided with a playground--though most find feeding chickens and throwing rocks in the river the best entertainment
Use of a well appointed kitchen (with a convection oven but no microwave). Soaking tub in the private bath that looks over the river. Infrared sauna available. Therapeutic massage can be booked for $75/session, in a screened studio at the river's edge. A second bedroom is available in a small adobe underneath the cottonwoods for groups that need a second bedroom.
Interaction with Guests
The hosts are available but unobtrusive.
A river in the high desert. Five minutes from the Georgia O'Keeffe home tour. Thirty-five from Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs. Ten minutes to Abiquiu Reservoir. Fifteen minutes from Ghost Ranch. Five minutes from Abiquiu pueblo. Carson National Forest across the road, Santa Fe National Forest across the river. Dining options from casual to upscale casual withing 10 minutes drive. Great general store 5 minutes away.
Children that share the queen bed don't need to be counted as extra guests. Since I use the kitchen too, we can work out schedules that accommodate everyone's needs.
The Retreat on the River was amazing! The best part was the view out the front doors, the walkable landscape, and the bathtub. I requested the room on very short notice but OroLynn let me stay the night. The Chama River area is one of the most beautiful areas in the country and the retreat is a quiet place to experience this beauty.
OroLynn is very hospitable and had lots of suggestions for local hiking and exploring. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean, and there is a beautiful view of the stars from the oversize bathtub. The sound of the river lulled us to sleep. We highly recommend OroLynn's respite if you are in Abiquiu.
If you are even remotely contemplating staying here, just book it. This is what Airbnb is all about - a welcoming and wonderful host and a safe, thoughtful, and magical home. OroLynn made me feel incredibly comfortable in her space with her welcome email, and continued to do so when I arrived, making room in her fridge for my food, offering hiking suggestions, offering to meet me at the driveway if I couldn't find it at night, even letting me collect eggs from her chickens. She was available for help or conversation if I needed her, but never intrusive, keeping my bedroom and bathroom a private space. And what a wonderfully designed space. A comfy pillow top bed, a beautiful shower and tub with river/desert views, toiletries, fresh towels and robes, and little details like a bedside clock and flashlight for a nighttime hot tub dip. I spent every morning soaking in that tub on the water, watching the cows drink across the river, taking in the murmur of the river. And each morning cooking breakfast in the well appointed kitchen. I also relished cozy-ing up in her airy and comfortable open living room to read, a fire in the wood stove, a cat on my lap. And I thoroughly enjoyed the morning OroLynn and I had a wonderful coffee chat about, well, everything :) OroLynn thank you so much for your kindness, hospitality and for sharing your beautiful space, we're very lucky that you do; I hope to return soon!
Oh, and location-wise, this is a great spot. Quiet and removed for inner contemplation, but near Bode's General Store for supplies, a short drive to Ghost Ranch for hikes, workshops and Georgia O'Keefe tours, about 40 min to the incredible Ojo Caliente Spa (amazing hot springs, massages (ask for Rachel W!) and food), a gorgeous 1.5 hour drive to Taos (highly recommend the Taos Mesa Brewing Company near the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge with spectacular views, awesome food, live music and events, family friendly.) And not too far from Santa Fe or Albuquerque; I drove the Turquoise Trail (Route 14) that runs between them and really enjoyed exploring the old and current artsy mining towns.
OroLynn's home is beautiful and it was such a pleasure be there over the Thanksgiving Holiday. She is gracious with her home and made us feel totally welcome and comfortable. I'm hoping to get back there again soon.
This was the best trip I've had in a LONG time. OroLynn was the most gracious, kind-hearted host. A lovely home and a magical spot in New Mexico, I was comfortable and well taken care of over the week and a half I spent on the river. Comfortable accommodations, everything anyone could need to feel like home is right where you are in the beautiful desert country of an awe inspiring landscape. I would consider OroLynn a friend, and her attention to my well-being was beyond genuine. Words don't capture the elegance of me stay in her humble abode. Many thirteen thank yous OroLynn; long life and honey in your heart!
It was such a pleasure to experience OroLynn’s kindness and hospitality. As a first-time Airbnb user, she made me feel very at ease and comfortable during my stay. She recommended some great itineraries so that I would get the most of my short visit to Abiquiú. One evening, OroLynn even offered to wait for me at the end of her driveway upon my return to the house, since the roads were dark, and she concerned I would miss the driveway entrance!
The location is also very close to many of the area’s local attractions such as Ghost Ranch, Cerro Pedernal, and the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. Not to mention, the proximity of Bode’s General Store—a fun convenience store not only filled with the usual items, but also complimented by gourmet delights, eclectic decor, and unique handmade souvenirs by local artists.
As for the setting, I could not have asked for a better place to relax and decompress. In the evenings, I was able to take in a few Abiquiú moonrises, while falling asleep listening to the flow of the Rio Chama over the rocks. Each morning I was greeted by the sunrise east of my room as it colored the charming and breathtaking views offered by the elegant river valley where the property sits. One can even enjoy these spectacular vistas from the large glass windows of the shower.
The home itself is also very creative, and hints of OroLynn’s innovative and whimsical design talents are apparent throughout. I would definitely recommend a stay in this special place, and with such an open, welcoming and kind host!
Oh my, how does one describe this place of perfection? Not only is it extremely clean and comfortable… all the usual good things you look for, but it is a MAGICAL place with trees and river, wind and stars, windows that overlook all the beauty- even the wall of glass in the shower/tub (very deep & relaxing)… I saw the mind-blowing yellow glow of cottonwood trees in the height of their color change in every direction and showers of stars, the Milky Way, I haven't seen stars like that since… well, the last time I was in northern New Mexico.
BTW, directions were extremely concise, it's very convenient to everything in the area- Bode's General Store, love it- best coffee ever and YES they have soy creamer! Abiquiu central and Georgia O'Keefe's home/studio only 5 minutes, and 15 miles to Ghost Ranch. Stunning scenery in every direction.
The bed is HEAVENLY, and I am #1 picky bed person- known to carry a memory foam mattress for 6 weeks of travel across the country to assure my comfort (not fun), and at the river's edge in the comfort of that bed, I slept so well. The bathroom is great, as mentioned above...
OroLynn, also called Goldie, was so accommodating- opening her home and beautiful kitchen for morning coffee, use of the refrigerator, anything I needed was available or arranged. I LOVED talking to her.
I had a bodywork session with Goldie for my last night- in her divine massage studio on the edge of the river. I could hear the water flowing and the cottonwood leaves dappled light over me as the sun set and Goldie did her work, uniquely fitted for the individual, intensely relaxing and clarifying for the mind and body, I felt rewired, like a birth... we thought, fitting for the state of mind I'm in… I was very supported with this bodywork, I left energized and relaxed.
YES! to the Retreat on the River… and THANK YOU, OroLynn/Goldie for a remarkable experience...

I am a nurse and therapist, specializing in healing body work. I moved to Abiquiu in 1978 and spent many years working as a hospice nurse in villages and homes throughout the area, so I have come to know the culture and the land intimately. My children and grandchildren, my friends, and the soul shaking beauty of northern New Mexico fill my life and heart.
