I had a great stay. The hosts are incredibly friendly and helpful; the apartment is a genuine bargain compared to Tokyo hotels; and is conveniently located (very close to a metro stop that will take you directly into the heart of the city). Would go out of my way to stay here in the future given the value and goodness of the place.
I traveled on a JR rail pass that allows unlimited train travel to include most bullet trains and is a great value and bargain for those on a budget who will be traveling across many cities. I looked for a place that was along one of the JR lines and came across this listing. This apartment is very conveniently located and easily accessible from Narita airport as well as getting to surrounding attractions. Using the JR pass, I was able to take the Narita Express to Shinagawa station, with one transfer to the JR Keihin-Tōhoku Line towards Yokohama. JR Tsurumi station is 5 stops after Shinagawa and 3 stops before Yokohama (both stations allow transfers to the Shinkansen (bullet train) for travel to other cities such as Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.).
The accommodation, located off of the main living room, is private with sliding doors as pictured. A foam double mattress and fold-out camping chairs were very comfortable and met my needs. I was given an apartment key during my stay that allowed me to freely come and go on my own schedule. The walk to the apartment is a leisure 15 minutes up a hill from the station, using West exit. The East exit has 6 floors of shops and restaurants with a market on the ground floor and an "English" garden on the rooftop. The best currency exchange rate was offered on the 2nd floor of the building immediately across the train station as you come out of the West exit. The Italian restaurant (Saizeriya) located on the 4th floor of that same building offered decent food and was reasonably priced.
I am so grateful for this homestay because both the location and family allowed me to complete my travel experience which is the opportunity to live like a local. Ryota is very responsive and resourceful. Both he and his wife, Miyuki are very kind and thoughtful. Lastly, their daughter is so well behaved that you do not even notice that there is a child in the home. Do not hesitate to stay with this wonderful family as it will only enrich your travel experience. When you stay with them, you are amongst friends.
Ryota and Miuki (together with their kid Sora) have been wonderful hosts. I stayed with them for 5 days and I have no complaints. Their flat is located between Tokyo and Yokohama, and commuting between these places would be a breeze. It is a 10-12 min walk including a short uphill climb from JR Tsurumi and Keikyu stations. Conversational English was very good and Ryota was able to bring me to a good sushi place in Ginza one Sunday. I learned a lot about the Japanese people during my short stint with them. Highly recommended!
Ryota and Miyuki were wonderful hosts, generous with their time. They are a lovely couple and so interesting to talk to, just so friendly, with a beautiful baby daughter. As a first time visitor to Japan it was so valuable to be with a family willing to provide advice about travelling, train trips and local attractions. The apartment was delightful and the view is spectacular. The apartment is very well placed between Tokyo and Yokohama and not far from the local station.
Staying here was one of the best travel decisions I made on my trip to Japan. Their home was a perfect base for attending a conference in Yokohama. Additionally, the room was clean, comfortable and private. My hosts were friendly, very willing and able to help me learn to navigate the trains and find other resources I needed during my stay.
