The Space

This private, secluded and charming Old Hawaii style Ohana (family dwelling) is 5 minutes from beautiful Kealakekua Bay, Manini Beach, and Keei Beach. The bay is famous for its incredible snorkeling, standup paddling, kayaking and opportunities to swim with the local pod of spinner dolphins.

The cottage has a queen-size bed, a well appointed kitchen, gas barbeque, covered lanai and sweeping views of the south Kona coastline. The full bathroom offers a shower overlooking Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook monument. Along with charming Old Hawaii ambiance, enjoy the modest conveniences of hard line internet, and flat screen TV with DVD player. The cottage is surrounded by a lush tropical garden including palm, mango, papaya, avocado, banana, and citrus trees along with many exotic flowering Hawaiian plants.

This property is well located, close to the beach and within minutes to shopping and restaurants, including a grocery store that carries many local and organic options, plus a weekly farmers market. Within walking distance is the Paleaku Peace Garden where guests can take yoga classes or spend a quiet meditative afternoon. Nearby also is the historic Painted Church and City of Refuge at Honaunau.

There are many hiking opportunities and local beaches waiting to be explored in this rural Kona neighborhood. Tandem ocean kayak is available on site as well, with lots of local knowledge as to the little known hot spots of this South Kona community.

We look forward to welcoming you to this Kona Coast power spot where you will experience the true Aloha spirit of Hawaii.

  • We spent the last 3 nights of our 2 week visit to the Big Island at Red Ti Hale, and it was ideal. Very peaceful, cozy, comfortable place with spectacular views. Great location, close to Manini Beach & Ho'okena Beach, which we loved. Also close to Big Island Bees museum & store, which was fascinating, & the Paleaku Peace Garden, a very special place. We also really appreciated being outfitted with beach chairs & beach towels. Peter was a great host, directing us to the nearby ChoiceMart to get some supplies. He also quickly re-lit the pilot light on the hot water heater after the wind had blown it out. We hope to return to the Big Island someday, & if we do we will definitely stay at this cottage again. Mahalo.

  • Our stay at Kealakekua Bay Cottage was nothing short of wonderful. Peter is a very helpful host, and has plenty of local knowledge. The cottage itself is cozy, clean, and provides everything you need-- with the added bonuses of breezy screen windows, AMAZING views, and the beautiful sights of Peter's landscaping. We filled our stay with plenty of snorkeling (location suggestions provided by Peter), sea kayaking (kayak rental provided by Peter), a trip to Volcano National Park, beaches north of Kailua, and a visit to the top of Mauna Kea.

We traveled up and down Napo'opo'o Road frequently to access beaches and other sights (all within 5-15min drive). There is a farmer's co-op that has coffee, mac nuts, ice cream (very delicious), local fruit down the road. We were also frequent visitors to Choice Mart (just up the hill) for incredibly fresh and delicious ahi tuna, papaya, mango, and other tropical fruits. There is also a Green Market just up the hill on Sundays that had lots of fresh and delicious treats.

We would most certainly stay at Kealakekua Bay Cottage again, and would recommend it to any of our friends.

  • Peter's cottage was a great introduction to the Big Island. We were really impressed with the accommodations. Peter was a great host and always seemed nearby if we had questions. The views and landscaping really make this place stand out. Peter takes great care of the property and is rewarded well with beauty. The nights were wonderful with the breeze coming through. We found a farmers market nearby that was pretty magical as well. Kitchen was great for making simple meals and eating on the lanai. We have already discussed staying again in the future. Thank you Peter for a great experience!

  • We loved our cottage overlooking Kealakekua Bay. Peter was a great host - he gave us lots of tips on snorkeling sites and his two person kayak is great! The cottage is very tidy and practical. We loved waking to the birds and going to sleep lullabied by cricket and frog songs. Lovely! Thanks, Peter for a great introduction to the Big Island. Mahalo, Flora and Roger

  • The screened in cottage was a cozy retreat perched in the trees and tropical foliage overlooking an expansive view of the ocean.

  • We got a chance to come to the Captain Cook area and were fortunate enough to stay at the amazing Kealakekua Bay Cottage, with the million dollar views from each window, can't be beat anywhere!! Peter was a perfect host and he has put a lot of love and attention into the surroundings and magical lodging experience. You will not be disappointed.
The Captain Cook area on the Big Island is the perfect place to stay. We have explored the whole island and fell in love with this location.

  • This was our second stay with Peter and Barbara and it never disappoints. It exudes Hawaiian charm. We love the lanai, shaded with lovely views. Peter, as always, was attentive and gracious throughout. He's a master gardener and those with an interest in horticulture and tropical plants will truly appreciate the setting (which just keeps getting better). Peter even made sure that I had access to a Big Screen TV for the NFC championship game. Having grown up in Seattle, and as a long-time Seahawks fan, this was a game I didn't want to miss. So thank you Peter! We will definitely book this ohana again next time we get back to Big Island.

About
Peter and Barbara have mixed histories on the Big Island. Peter, a 20 year resident and recently retired, is enjoying all the water sports available within a few minutes of his home, especially snorkeling and stand up paddling. Barbara is newer to Hawaii and commutes from the main land to join Peter with his adventures as often as possible. Both are passionate about the South Kona area and give back to the community that has given them so much by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Friends of Manini Beach. Peter is an avid gardener and when not on the water can be found planting, transplanting and trimming in his exotic Hawaiian garden. Barbara, when not following Peter on some bay or reef excursion, is busy identifying and learning the habits of the local birds that share the accommodations on their beautiful parcel of land. Both find time daily to sit quietly and watch incredible sunsets on Kealekakua Bay from the lanai of their recently renovated historic Hawaiian home.
