Check-in is a 3pm, but if you arrive in to town earlier we can arrange something for you. Please be respectful of others in the building. It is OK to party but do so quietly after 12 am.
We loved the apartment and of couse the location!! San Miguel is a beautiful city and this is our second time here. We travelled with our newborn baby (12 weeks) and it was nice to stay so central. The apartment is beautiful and authentic. The terrace has a nice view and perfect for sunsets. We would love to come back one day, to San Miguel and La Pajarera. Patricia is a very good host!!
Let's start with the positive: This apartment is in a great location central to everything. But be aware that this location comes with noise: frequent clanging of the church bells, loud sounds from festivals in the Jardin (ex. 8 hours of drumming one day). Prospective renters should be aware that when the bells ring ALL night every 15 minutes, they sound like they are in the bedroom with you. Earplugs might not be enough to muffle the sound of the bells at 4:45am.
Patricia willingly supplied items we needed: a better heater, a toaster oven, a new frying pan, a teapot and a tray. She responded quickly to plumbing and electrical problems.
Now the negative: The following are all things Patricia had under her control.
-The apartment never looked or smelled clean:
-persistent sewer gas smell in kitchen
-some dishes & cookware were dirty & greasy upon arrival
-cutlery pulls apart from the handles
-dusty & dirty carpeting
-no housekeeping service/no extra towels for first 10 days
-dirty, moldy bathtub tile, persistently filthy floor, especially around toilet
-badly rusted faucets in kitchen & bathroom
-cracked bathroom sink
- discovered lamp plug MELTED onto extension cord
-terrace access & handrails covered in bird droppings
-maid uses one mop for interior/exterior
-On two occasions the owner Patricia brought people to see the apartment without informing/ asking us in advance. The second time we were on the terrace, but our neighbors were in bed and didn't answer the door. They were surprised when the unexpected group walked in! We felt this was extremely disrespectful of our privacy. No other owner would show us an apartment when the occupants were home or without their knowledge or permission.
-On Wednesday February 25 and also on March 4 , Patricia hosted a meeting on the rooftop terrace without prior notice to the two renters who had use of this terrace. When she arrived, Patricia posted a sign stating there was a meeting & "sorry for any inconvenience…" It was an inconvenience and disrespectful of her renters.
We informed Patricia all along of the above issues, some of which she was able to address. In the final days of our 5 week rental, she stated that she was planning to hire a new housekeeper. Patricia certainly seemed willing to work with her clients and this a hopeful sign that others will have a better experience than we did.
What a wonderful experience we had! We were met at the apartment and all went smoothly. Location cannot be beat - steps to everything. We loved that we could walk out of the apartment and to almost every restaurant, bar, market, etc. (some were off the beaten path and required a taxi, but a taxi could be found easily steps away at the Jardin). You really could not ask for a better location.
Very comfortable apartment. Unusual to stay in SMA in late Nov. and not need a heater. The place stayed warm! It is exactly as pictured, although the patio was better in person than in the pictures. Loved that there was a sound system, that water had been provided (important), that there was lots of hot water (unusual), and flowers and fruit on arrival.
We were fortunate enough to get to meet Patrica. She is just so kind and personable. I woke up one morning with a stiff neck and back from an old accident. I cursed myself for not traveling with an extra pillow, as I usually do. Amazingly, within minutes I received a text from Patricia asking if I needed anything. She sent extra pillows over right away and I enjoyed the rest of my trip in comfort. Patricia was very accommodating.
Some things that I considered before renting the apartment that you may have questions about: 1) Yes, you do hear the bells of the church. You are going to hear them if you stay in a central location. Period. After awhile, you don't notice them. They were not nearly as loud as I feared. 2) The fireworks were LESS noisy in this apartment than when I stayed on the hill last year. That was a surprise. Again, you cannot stay anywhere in SMA without hearing at least some fireworks. 3) I felt safe in the apartment at all times. There are multiple layers of doors/locks. So much so, that I left the apartment open when I went to the rooftop. SMA in general is pretty safe, but I do think about these things (I'm from L.A.).
If you haven't been to SMA before, know that there are quirks. The city does not have the same plumbing that we do. You cannot stay in a colonial building and expect that it will behave like it was built yesterday. I am not saying that about THIS apartment. I am saying it about ALL apartments in the city center. It is what it is. You have to manage your expectations. That being said, we were absolutely comfortable in this apartment and will go back again and again. (If Patricia will let us after I broke her soap dish).
I would absolutely recommend a stay here (although I was tempted to leave a bad review just so it would be available when I want to come back).
Thanks Patricia for a great stay!
First the host - Patricia was incredibly accommodating and helpful, very responsive, and answered all the (many many many) questions we sent her way about SMA, the location of the apartment, etc. She even let us stay in the apartment next door while ours was getting cleaned (which was much appreciated since we got to SMA at 6:30 a.m. off a redeye). We were in touch throughout our stay and coulnd't have asked for a better host.
The location - incredibly cenral, it's 20 feet away from the main square (jardin) and all the fun that comes with it. There are lots of restaurants and cafes and shops within 5-7 minute walk, including many within a 1 minute walk, that it doesn't make sense to stay anywhere else.
The apartment - spacious and clean, it includes a stove, fridge, and microwave in the foyer/kitchen, a large bedroom, bathroom, and balcony. It also comes with access to the rooftop terrace that overlooks the church and part of the town (see the apartment's profile photo). There is also a breakfast/lunch place on the first floor of the building.
This was an interesting experience...the pictures were very cozy, the place was cheap......but, it was not a good place for me. Patricia has two dogs that barked all night--So I had a hard time sleeping. She was kind enough to move me to her apartment in the middle of town. An excellent location but then you had church bells in the morning...
I did find a quieter place on the outskirts of town...
La Parajeja is the perfect spot in San Miguel if you want the full small town yet right in the middle of everything experience. The aparment is exactly as pictured and wonderful. Greeted with flowers and everything.Patricia and Chris were very easy to work with and flexible on check-in/out time. You don't need a car if you stay here. The roof top terrace is fantastic! Of note though- its right next to the church and those bells ring on the hour...so if you are light sleeper and have to sleep in then proceed with caution. While the bells did wake me, they didn't bother me and added to the (website hidden) - during the day you can hear music from mariachis in the jardin - awesome.
Patricia made us feel welcome and was readily available to answer travel related questions and was even able to supply the name of a reliable doctor. Fresh flowers were everywhere. The location is great if one wants to be close to the activities in the Hardin. We got to celebrate the anniversary of the revolution. It was a great cultural experience.
