The Space

Come stay at my historic Charleston bungalow. Built in 1935 in Charleston's Downtown North Central district located just off of King St., this home is within walking distance or short bike ride of Moe's Crosstown Tavern, Santi's, The Tattooed Moose, and beautiful Hampton Park. It's a scant one and a half mile jaunt to all of the eating, drinking, and shopping that King St. has to offer and is 3 miles from The Battery. The neighborhood is now one of Charleston's up and coming historic downtown areas with many homes being renovated and restored. It's possible to walk downtown but using the bikes to get there is much easier.

More than just proximity to the local haunts, I can offer you the following hospitality:

About the house:
-Quaint gated yard
-Big front porch with a swing
-Located on a quiet residential street
-Parking either on the street or behind a locked gate
-Two small friendly dogs
-Free Wi-fi
-Use of full kitchen with all-new appliances
-Newly renovated and decorated interior
-Private bathroom with shower
-Comfy double bed in lovely, private room
-Ice cold Air Conditioning
-Infinite hot water
-15-20 minutes from Sullivan's or Folly Beach
-Lots of fridge space
-Basic cable and DVD player
-Extensive library of books to borrow and enjoy on the porch or at the beach
-Huge washer/dryer
-Two bikes for you to see the city on

Please note that this home may NOT be the place for you ONLY if:
You are not a dog person, you prefer an extremely quiet environment, or you are uncomfortable with friends and family coming and going occasionally, especially over the weekends.

  • Enjoyed my stay. Did not get to see host, missed each other on a few occasions. Recommend the house, quick trip down King Street to center of Charleston, you will need a car to get around.

  • Matt's house is as lovely and as interestingly decorated as it appears in his profile photos. The location is a little off the beaten path, but that's one of the reasons I enjoy using Airbnb, to acquaint myself with neighborhoods and homes beyond the tourist hotel rows downtown. His recommendations provided on his profile for bars and restaurants were fun to try.

He's nice to leave some snacks, sunscreen, magazines, books, etc. for guests. Matt was away during our stay but remained in touch and left everything in the house in easy-to-understand operating condition when we arrived.

There's a Food Lion grocery story, along with a CVS, just about four blocks south of Matt's house on King Street that's good to know about, if you want to buy groceries to cook.

The neighborhood, North Central, is transitional, but I felt safe running with earphones in each morning we were there. We chose to take a taxi home a couple nights from late outings in the area after a waitress and others who live nearby said it could be sketchy at times with several underpasses and dark streets, but we never felt uncomfortable or threatened (I live in a similar neighborhood in Washington, D.C., so may be a bit immune to urban sketchiness). We rented a car one day to go to the beach and found a prime parking spot right in front of the house on Poplar Street, where it's located.

Two older dogs stay in the house's laundry/mudroom when Matt's away, and have a doggie door to go out in the back yard. I volunteered to feed them (guests don't have to) and they were nice to have around.

I would highly recommend Matt's house to anyone interested in staying a couple miles north of the tourist fray in Charleston but close enough to zip downtown in a few minutes by bike, on foot, by bus or taxi.

  • The place was cute and Matt was really nice/helpful! The bikes were a nice perk, we used them a few times to get around the city. The location is close to King Street and a few miles from East Bay.

  • I had a great stay at Matt's, though unfortunately did not meet him in person as he was traveling at the time of my stay. The room is lovely, spacious and nicely decorated. The guest has sole use of the bathroom directly next to the room and a hanging rack for clothes is provided in the room which was very handy. There are also a couple of bikes available for use by guests which I used on a couple of occasions.

    Thanks for a great stay!

  • Matt was an awesome host. Check-in was super easy, even with Matt not being around. He's created a really comfortable spot where you can feel at home and come and go as you please. He even left two bikes with lock, helmets and an umbrella for us to use to get around. (disclaimer - due to the amount of alcohol we were consuming on our trip, we did not take him up on the offer, but it was nice to know they were there). Great to have local recommendations and just in general a cool guy to hang and chat with.

Hi everyone! I'm a native of Raleigh, NC now living in Charleston. I'm fairly active and go out to explore frequently; I know the city well and I'm happy to provide recommendations for anything you'd want to do here. In addition to living in Charleston and Raleigh, I've also lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Melbourne, Australia. I enjoy traveling and adventures off the beaten path. If I'm not in the house, you'll find me either in the back yard playing with the dogs, restoring old cars in the garage, surfing, fishing, or hanging out with friends. You can expect a laid back, casual, and homey atmosphere in my house - it's not a museum, there aren't labels on things, it's just your home away from home while traveling. Come and go as you please, put your beer in the fridge, and come join me and my friends grilling on the front porch!
