A totally unique house in a beautiful and historic part of the country. Perfect for romantic getaways, but can also sleep 8 for family get-togethers and fun DC weekend escapes. Huge kitchen, beautiful fireplace, all on 2 acres in the woods.
Inside the dome - 25' ceiling, great skylights, comfy couch, cozy fireplace, and more...
Awesome geodesic dome house near historic Harpers Ferry. This house is truly unique, with a 25' ceiling, spiral staircase, lovely kitchen, huge living room, fireplace, and 2 acres of space!
Located just a little over an hour from DC, 3 hours from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and about 5 from NYC, the dome is only a half mile from the beautiful Shenandoah River and less than a mile from the Appalacian Trail. Historic Harpers Ferry is just four miles away, and Charles Town's Hollywood Casino is less than a ten-minute drive.
2 bedrooms and 2 full baths, a huge pullout couch, additional couches and air mattresses allow the place to accommodate anything from a romantic weekend for two to a house party of a dozen. Previous guests have included families, couples, eco-women retreaters and century-ride bikers.
Kitchen is not only fully equipped (pots/pans/dishes) but also stocked with spices, dry goods, and (usually) even beer - take what you need and leave your contribution for beverages and ingredients when you check out.
As mentioned in the title, this house is truly unique - its a geodesic dome house (bucky ball), with a beautiful full-wall mural, spiral staircase, and wrap-around deck. Just like a regular house but better!
New HVAC is keeping the dome cool in the summer and warming the place quickly in winter. The central fireplace can get the place really toasty (and romantic :) as an alternative to the fancy new heating/cooling.
Dome currenty does not have a washer/dryer. We also have a hot tub that doesn't work, but hope to have fixed by the winter.
Dogs OK with permission but they must be VERY housebroken and stay off the furniture. Sorry, no cats (allergies :(). For dogs there is a $50 additional pet fee payable in cash or check to my caretaker.
Little kids are great too, but it should be noted that the house is not child-proofed, and has an exposed spiral staircase (so recommend no pets or small kids on the second floor).
Feel free to contact me with questions about the place or the area - I wish I could get out there more often!
everything except the basement of the house.
Interaction with Guests
mainly by phone and email, but if I'm not travelling internationally I can usually get back to folks within 24 hours.
Its really peaceful and really close to the Appalachian Trail and Shenandoah River. Neighbors are really friendly and ready to help with all kinds of things, but they are far enough away that its easy to have a very isolated weekend in the woods.
There isn't much public transit. Best non-car transit is your feet (but taking the AT your feet can carry you from Georgia to Maine :)
Other Things to Note
Dogs OK with prior permission and $50 pet fee.
General houseguest rules apply - please clean up after yourself before you leave, and check to make sure you have gone over the check list we have on site to help make your stay easier. Leave used linens by the door before you leave, put all trash in the outside trash can, wash all dishes and pots/pans you use, and lock the door behind you. Also respect the neighbors, and try to keep noise reasonable (they are pretty far away, but still...:) No Smoking inside.
My stay at the Dome was amazing! The drive there was easy until you get on the mountain (within 2 miles of the house) Luckily, we have a Jeep so it wasn't a big deal for us but I can imagine with snow and a 2WD drive vehicle it would suck. The house warmed up quickly and the fire was nice. The house was clean and the bed downstairs was extremely comfortable (firm mattress)- my favorite! Based on the pictures, I thought I wouldn't be able to see neighbors. However, there is a neighbor across the street and to the right of the house (pretty close) we never saw the neighbors but the house across the street did leave their dog outside often and it barked for long periods of time. (This was the only negative thing I could say about my stay and obviously totally out of Billy hands) The first night we went to "Dish" (was recommended by Billy) the food was DELICIOUS!!! I can not say enough good things about this restaurant. We also stopped by a bakery called "Royalicious" the bagels and cream cheese choices were different and very good. We went to the Casino, it was average and pretty busy (it was a Friday) everyone in Charles Town was very helpful and friendly. We spent the whole next day by the fire and doing a puzzle. The bath tub upstairs (jetted tub) was extremely relaxing. Billy was helpful, attentive, and very friendly. We had a great stay and I would certainly stay there again. We loved our stay and had a great weekend get-a-way.
We had a wonderful experience. Our visit was for the purpose of a family gathering for Christmas. Our party included six adults and 3 dogs. We were welcomed with a bottle of wine on the dining room table and a small decorated Christmas tree in the living room. The neighborhood is quiet, set among several homes along an unpaved road. The kitchen was stocked adequately with dishes and pans for us to cook in every day. We made two day trips to the town of Harpers Ferry and one to a nearby distillery. It is about a 20 minute drive to Historic Harpers Ferry and to grocery stores. The wood stove was a welcome treat. It was a perfect place for our family to gather. It is important to keep in mind that there is a spiral staircase to the second floor which is an open loft with no doors. As advertised, it works well for 6 adults. Great internet connection if you need it, too.
We loved the Dome! From the beginning, Billy was quick to respond to emails and questions regarding our stay. He had suggestions of nearby spots to check out (and we ended up taking his advice and visiting Bloomery Sweetshine Distillery... such a fun experience!). On check-in day, he reached out to make sure we arrived without problem. The Dome is tucked away in the middle of windy, graveled roads, but we easily found it in the dark following the GPS. It was chilly, and the heater worked well despite the large space. We went with a big group (11 and a pup!) and sharing space was inevitable -- the open concept bathroom upstairs left little privacy for anyone needing it (our group was friendly and managed just fine!), but there is another downstairs for more privacy. We grilled meats on the deck and made loads of food with a fully stocked kitchen. While the Dome is a bit vintage in age, we had all the comforts of our own homes. It was a perfect space to spend a 30th birthday with friends, getting away from the city, and taking in a bit of nature. Thanks to Billy for being flexible with our check-out time (since moving 11 people on a Sunday AM can be a bit tricky). An amazing weekend spent at the Dome! I'd repeat the stay, hands down.
Billy made us feel welcome with good communication before and during our stay. The house was as described and offered us what we needed for the week that we were there. While Harpers Ferry is an accurate mailing address, the house is actually located in the community of Shannondale, about 20 minutes from Harpers Ferry. We only had one real complaint, but it tainted our impression of the place and our comfort level while there: we noticed cockroaches throughout the house and maybe some other pantry pests in the kitchen. I contacted Billy about the roaches during our stay. He said that this had never been a problem before and that he would address it, so hopefully it won't be an issue for future guests. Overall, we would recommend this house, especially to youngish groups of friends without kids.
The dime worked beautiful for our needs. I loved having the feeling of solitude in the trees. I can't express how great it was to work with you to add the cable and internet. For us it made that perfect to be able to stay in touch.
We had lots of fun in the dome house, which is adorable. It is definitely smaller than the photos make it appear, but was just fine for a family of four. The acoustics of the dome are such that all noise carries everywhere, so if you have a larger group, beware that you won't get much privacy! Also, as mentioned in other reviews, the upstairs bathroom has no doors and no divider from the bedroom at all, so it affords no privacy either. Putting a curtain up to at least screen the toilet might be an idea? The kitchen is well stocked, which is great, and we appreciated the use of the spices, baking ingredients, etc. There is no wifi, cable or antenna TV reception, but there are DVD players and even some movies on hand. The house could use some updates - as mentioned, the dishwasher doesn't work, and there were plumbing issues while we were there, which Dawn and Billy were actively attentive to. Dawn (the caretaker, who lives across the street) was very responsive and helpful during our stay. As others have mentioned, you can't hike or do much strolling near the home. And bring your bug spray! Overall the house is comfortably furnished and stocked with plenty of clean linens. It's actually closer to Charles Town than downtown Harper's Ferry, but well located for plenty of area exploration. And when else are you going to get to sleep under such balanced geodesic conditions?
The Dome was as advertised. The instructions left by our caretaker Dawn were very easy to follow and she was kind enough to walk around and point out a few additional items of note around the home. We didn't end up spending much time in the Dome but it was easy to access and everything was as Billy described. It was very easy to communicate with Dawn and Billy for everything we needed and it was nice knowing that she was literally across the street if we had any questions.
