The space

Staten Island... the often forgotten borough of New York City. Just a 25 minute Ferry Ride to and from the City of New York! The Staten Island Ferry runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 Days a year (including all holidays) and is Free to get back and forth to NYC. You will also get to see unbelievable views of the New York City Skyline and Statue of Liberty while you are crossing over. Did I mention that the Ferry is Free??? Yes it is one of the best deals you will find in NYC!! Once you cross over to lower Manhattan you will find the Metro that will take you to anywhere you want in the City.

The place is located in the area known as Saint George and is about an 8 minute Metro Bus ride to the Ferry or if you are feeling up to it you could walk. The bus lets you off right on the corner. There are several buses that travel this route so the wait is minimal. I suggest you check out (URL HIDDEN) to find approx travel times and distances from our apartment which is located at the corner of Victory Blvd and Jersey St Staten Island, NY.

The room is located in our house on the 2nd floor and shares a bathroom with up to 6 other guests at any given time. It has beautiful hardwood floors and a queen size bed that sleeps 2 comfortably. There is also a 25 " Flat Screen TV with basic channels... not that you will be spending much time in the room.

On the 1st floor you will find the Cafe... apart from the house with its own separate entrance. The Cafe is equipped with kitchen table, sink, dishes, pots & pans, full size stove, microwave, coffee maker and water cooler all at your disposal. There is a refridgerator as well.

The room is for low maintenance travelers. We are normally out and about. Guests that are happy staying with us are typically self-sufficient people who are able to troubleshoot and configure things such as TV, Internet, replace a light bulb, turn on heat and ac by themselves and unclog a toilet with a plunger as well as clean up after themselves. Of course things of a more serious nature will be handled promptly.

***Please note that this is a private room in our home where we live. If sharing the kitchen and bathroom facilities is not for you please consider other alternatives. This IS a safe, clean and economic alternative to pricey NYC and only 1/2 hour away.***

The stay at Jay's home is worthy at budget cost. The stay was very peaceful and there was no any issues on sharing bathroom and kitchen with all guests. The bathroom was in good condition except the shower knob is not tight enough so there is always a little water dropping off which sometimes disturbs your sleep, as my room (Room B) was attached to same wall surface. The kitchen was clean and equipped with basic utensils and amenities for preparing foods and breakfast.

The room was just as described. The independence of the room was what greatly appreciated, as we were looking for something low key to just crash at. There were no problems with the door or the water heater during our stay and the one time we met with Jay he was very friendly.

Jay's house was an OK experience. We did have a slight problem getting the keys to the room, but was remedied in about 10 minutes after to Jay. The room itself is as advertised, comfy bed, two pillows, small mini fridge and a closet and dresser. It's location is spot on as well, 7 stop bus ride from the ferry station that is easy to navigate to and accessible by multiple bus routes. The bathroom has extremely poor ventilation and causes what appears to be mold to build up on the ceiling. Paper towels were left help clean up after oneself in the bathroom, unfortunately the paper towels were not restocked. Also, one the 3rd day, it seems the hot water heater broke and were forced to take cold showers. I messaged Jay and about 3 hours later he responded "thanks, i'll look into it", I received no follow up message to if the issue was ever fixed. One major issue I had was when I returned late one night. I had arrived at 1am and walked up the street to find the main entrance to the house wide open. Also, the upstairs door (also a key pad door) was also unlocked and wide open as well, exposing all four guest bedrooms to potential burglary. The next morning was when we discovered issues with the hot water, combined with our extreme concern for our safety and well being (and property) my wife and I decided to find another place and left early choosing to eat the cost of the rest of the stay. Overall, our experience is somewhere between bad and passable. The room itself was good, if you are looking for a room near NYC and have no desire/need to bathe this is perfect listing. However, if you need to use this room for anything more than a crash pad, I would look elsewhere.

Comparing to the money we paid it was a good place, though we didn't always feel safe walking in the neighbourhood. It was also a little difficult to get in touch with jay after we asked him more than once for some bathroom supplies like toilet paper. The way from his house to the city was very easy to find and he was also willing to help us finding the way.
