About This Listing
Perched on a mountain over Topanga Canyon, privacy, views and nature surrounds you!
Close to it all, yet worlds away... This hidden cottage is perched atop a glorious bluff on a 23 acre gated mountaintop estate overlooking the lush Santa Monica Mountains. Escape down the country lane into complete privacy and serenity, yet be less than a mile to restaurants, entertainment, yoga and stores. Hike in 10,000 acre Topanga State park or take in the many nearby beaches. Shop the high-end boutiques of Malibu or Santa Monica, enjoy glorious sunsets and misty mornings or bike the hundreds of miles of trails of Topanga State Park straight from the front door. Horse riding facilities, theater, surf lessons, kite boarding, artist studios, seasonal festivals, Docent-led nature walks, miles of beaches all within 30 minutes of studios and Hollywood.
The Cottage has full kitchen, dishwasher and laundry.
2 bedrooms, one bath. The bath has a large tiled shower and laundry. Huge living area opens to a private park-like back yard with fruit trees and views. The cottage is bright and bathed by the sun through the huge windows.
Watch the sunset under beautiful ancient Oaks and Pepper trees. Buy fresh produce, jams and baked goods at the weekly Farmers market. Fall in love with the LA lifestyle.
First some random things we like to do in LA with kids:
Ride bikes on the path in Santa Monica - rent them from the shop near the pier and ride them all the way to Venice beach (if you are really ambitious you can go as far as Manhattan Beach)
or, for a more of a canyon work out, rent them from Topanga Creek Bycicles (phone number hidden) and join one of the weekend group rides that start from the shop. Very strenuous, but amazing.
Farmers market on Sundays in Santa Monica on Main St. - super fun, good food, music, people watching
and don't miss our own Farmer's Market on Fridays at the Inn of The Seventh Ray from 9-1
Go to the pool at Annenberg Comminity Beach House (eat breakfast at Back on The Beach, swim, read by the pool, run on the beach) or Calabasas pool if it's cold at the beach, it is sure to be hot in Calabasas!
Griffith Park observatory in Hollywood - short hike or drive right up, cool views of the city
Take a scenic drive on PCH to Neptunes Net for seafood, eat there or take to go and walk to the beach for a picnic, watch the sunset.
LA Zoo - it's all the way in Griffith Park (45 min away), but the zoo is very cool, the elephant exhibit is awesome.
Disneyland - 1.5 hours away, "The Happiest Place on Earth" ;) (I hate it)
Legoland - 2 hours away, great for little kids, the Small Town USA is cool (all the major cities made out of Legos), but an older kid will be bored unless a huge lego fan.
Universal Studios Hollywood - on the lot, has rides (the new Transformers ride)
Take a ferry or a boat to Catalina Island - several cool hotels and restaurants
Santa Barbara Zoo 2 hours away - much smaller than LA, but we like going there for the day, I love Santa Barbara
Laguna Beach Tidepools - go at low tide, amazing
Here is my beaches and hikes breakdown:
Easy and close: Topanga Beach
You can Park on PCH, facing south: turn into American Apparel, then get back on PCH and park along the PCH, walk down.
Great tide pools at low tide, my kids love it, great for boogie boarding between Chart House and the Life Guard House, great surf spot, but rocky, have to be a good surfer.
We usually get fish tacos from Reel Inn or Thai Food at Cholada Beach Cusine (our favorite) right across the street.
Great classic Cali beach with wide breaks and big waves: Will Rogers(Palisades) or Zuma(Malibu). Great long breaks, perfect for boogie boarding can be crowded on weekends.
Best beginner surf spot: Malibu Lagoon, you can even rent a board right there. Food across the way at Malibu Country Mart
Santa Monica beaches are great too, but can be crowded during weekends, we like Annenberg Comunity Beach House, it has great facilities, pool, showers, Back On The Beach Cafe. Parking is $8, pool is about $5 a person.
All Santa Monica beaches have food on the beach at Perry's cafe.
Great secluded beach is at Leo Carillo, it's a bit far (45 minutes), but really nice, pack a picnik or eat at Malibu Seafood or Neptune's Net, bot a great for steamed or fried seafood (will be busy on weekends) .
If you want to go to a restaurant on the beach:
Paradise Cove (Malibu) is our favorite, but its all the way out there, so we make a day of it, you can grab a great beach spot, buy drinks and chill. Save your restaurant receipt, then parking is only 3 dollars (otherwise $20)
Back on the beach Cafe (Santa Monica) we love it for breakfast, we'll park, eat breakfast, take our bikes for a nice long ride on the beach toward Venice beach or go to the pool at Annenberg Community Beach house, or go to the beach right there, waves are nice for surfing or boogie boarding.
Gladstones (at Sunset Blvd), is good for happy hour or brunch
Lobster (Santa Monica) is good for lunch or Happy Hour without kids
Great family hikes in the area:

Trippet Ranch to Santa Yanez Falls (3.5m)

I hope I NEVER lose the feeling I had staying here! It was true paradise and you will not find hosts more committed to your comfort. Before I arrived, I studied the photos, not quite sure I could trust them -- but they are in fact an accurate representation of this magical place. You will be surrounded by incredible vistas, and inside, have a beautiful, spacious home. The house is very clean but you are in the country so you should expect rustic charm. I absolutely loved it. It's practically impossible to believe how convenient the location is, yet a true world apart from the city.
I particularly appreciated the host pointing me toward great dog-friendly hikes. (I have never seen my dog happier than he was here!).
Love the property. We're long-time Topanga residents and stayed here while house-hunting. So we can say with assurance that there are very few properties in Topanga (or anywhere in the Malibu/Topanga area) that have the view that this property has. The house itself is quite comfortable, even for a family of four with two rambunctious boys. Perfect for entertaining outdoors. And sufficiently distant from the main house and road that you feel as if you've got the whole canyon to yourself.
The hosts are perfect: charming and helpful without ever being intrusive.
There may be larger and fancier houses in Topanga. But you won't find another one that will give you a more perfect "Topanga" experience.
We had a mini reunion with 2 of our closest friends who live across the country, and the Hideaway provided the ideal backdrop for a wonderful weekend. The setting is to die for - incredible vistas of the canyon and surrounding hills, beautiful greenery and chirping bird action, and numerous spots for socializing, relaxing, and enjoying the views. The home itself is total luxury, with a perfectly equipped kitchen, comfy and lovely bedrooms, spacious bathroom, and beach furniture to boot. As an added bonus for you dog lovers out there, Smokie the dog became our adoptive pet for the weekend and is one of the sweetest- natured dogs I've met. (If you're not into dogs, Olga said she would keep her inside while guests are around). The location is absolutely perfect for beach outings yet far enough away from the chaos of PCH, and whatever conveniences you may needs are a quick drive into Topanga. Olga was a great host and completely left us to our own devices but responded to texts immediately when we had questions. We will definitely be back! Highly recommend the Hideaway!!
The "Hideaway" is even more lovely than the photos. And the property is spectacular. We couldn't get enough of the views! I loved sitting outside and enjoying a glass of wine in the late afternoon. Olga and her family are the warmest, most generous hosts. Olga shared her citrus with us so we could make fresh juice in the morning! Topanga is wonderful--we loved Mimosa Cafe, the playground, and the farmer's market--and Topanga State Beach is very close. We loved our week!
This place is so beautiful and relaxing to the last detail. Olga was such a pleasant host to deal with and everything was just as I'd hoped it to be. Thank you so much for sharing the space!
Great stay! Very beautiful, peaceful, convenient location. Super friendly hosts. Unbeatable weather. Must go / highly recommended for both long and short breaks away from crazy cities!!!
