And there’s lots of great hiking in the surrounding foothills.
BONUS STUDIO OPTION
There is a separate studio apartment unit attached to the cottage, rented separately on airbnb. If you are interested in renting the studio for extra guests or family members, please let us know.
Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we rent you at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $150 fully refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized 15-speed Huffy with handbrakes.
We are also less than 30 minutes’ drive from both San Francisco (SFO) and San Jose (SJC) airports, except during rush hours, when it’s of course longer.
Alternatively, you can take the train from SFO airport—not fast, but very inexpensive:
(1) BART directly from SFO to Millbrae CalTrain station (about 15 min, approx $4)
(2) train to Menlo Park (under 30 minutes, approx $5)
(3) then right down Santa Cruz Ave from the station (20-minute brisk walk or very short taxi ride).
We live right next door and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations, and are available if you need any assistance once you've arrived.
Will consider pets with solid references and an additional fully refundable security deposit of $250.
Please email details of your needs.
We have maintained the cottage as a shoe-free space. We ask that you keep shoes off indoors to ensure that the floor is extra-clean for yourself and other guests.
We are very diligent about recycling everything possible, which our excellent local recycling service makes possible, which encourages us to recycle over 50% of all waste. They make it easy, with glass, metal, plastic and clean paper can all be recycled in the same container, and composting in another. Of course we provide details in the house manual.
No smoking allowed on our property. No exceptions.
LEGAL INTERNET USE ONLY
Comcast, our high-speed ISP, expressly forbids illegal downloads using bit-torrent or similar technology. Unfortunately, there have been some issue with this in the past, so must ask our guests to agree to this policy in writing upon arrival.
We have lived in this charming house for three months and felt very comfortable! The house is situated in a peaceful and quite green residential area. Shops, the campus and the train station are within easy reach by bike, and the train (Caltrain) allows for an easy transfer to San Francisco! For trips to the outdoors (e.g, to one of the many regional or state parks) a car is definitely an advantage.
The house is spacious and the decor is pleasant, tasteful and practical. Everything was clean, in good order and perfectly according to the description. In the kitchen we found everything we needed. I liked the living room particularly well though there is not so much direct sun. Yet thanks to the wall fully comprising of windows it is well lit and very friendly.
The garden, which was exclusively available to us, offers both sunny and shady areas, which is a plus in sunny California. In March, as the Glycinie began to flourish, sitting there was just wonderful!
Laurel, her husband and her son are pleasant and very helpful hosts and were always remarkably quickly accessible. There was only one time when Laurel was professionally particularly busy for a few days, and afterwards apologized for answering her e-mails only with a slight delay.
We have enjoyed our stay in this house and want to thank Laurel and her family for their kindness, their understanding of our needs and their great helpfulness. Next time we are planning a trip to this region, we would definitely like to stay in her house again.
Thank you Laurel!
The house was clean, very comfortable and exactly as described.
It certainly scored 9 out of 10 for us - see the TV point below.
Rob, I'm so sorry you had trouble with the TV and I wish you'd let us know during your stay. We checked it after seeing your comment, and there was just a minor setting that was off and my husband was able to reset it right away. In future we will provide more detailed instructions! Sorry for the inconvenience!
We got to the cottage and were greeted by Sprinkles cupcakes (which I had mentioned loving having moved out of the area). What a sweet surprise!
The cottage was a perfect size for us and was much better than a hotel for our family.
Laurel was extremely available throughout our stay - especially when we needed additional supplies.
Overall, it was a great stay and we would definitely stay there again!
This was a lovely experience. Even though we never got to meet her personally, we found Laurel to be a very good host from the first messages we exchanged. The description of the house was very accurate. It had every thing to make a family feel comfortable and at home. We simply wish we had more time to enjoy the house. We will definitely call again. Thanks Laurel...
This listing was very accurate. The lighting in the cottage was bright and airy, and it was in a nice secluded location. Laurel was prompt to respond to questions, and check-in and check-out were a breeze.
We have been stayed for three months at this cottage.
Laurel and Steve, who are the hosts, are wonderful.
The cottage is nice, comfortable and located in a quiet environment. However, it would be easier to have a car or a bike if you stay here for a long time.
First of all, thank you for such a wonderful experience.
Laurel is absolutely great to communicate with and everything went very smoothly. I was also amazed about how quick Laurel got back to my reservation questions, I don't think I have ever received email answers faster!
I booked the cottage for two of my colleagues during their stay in Menlo Park. Both of them were amazed by the cleanliness and overall welcoming and warm atmosphere of the cottage. The cottage was exactly as they had imagined and as it was displayed in the pictures. We also really appreciated all the extra information from Laurel about the area, local stores and local transportation.
We can't wait for the next stay at the cottage and really look forward to it.
Thank you again Laurel for such a pleasant experience!
