Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Overall found the apartment and Shiko great. The apartment was as pictured, clean, tidy and many utensils that were very handy. Shiko was always prompt in dealing with communications and helpful and polite. I liked the neighborhood and found the area interesting and likely gave more an insight to typical Kenyan life than most tourist type accommodation would. If I were to travel to Kenya again I would certainly give very serious consideration to staying at the apartment again. Jackie who came to clean the apartment was very competent, polite and nice mannered. Service people who came to rectify minor issues were also nice natured.

  • Very nice time at Shiko's place. Quite, easily accessible from Ngong road (Karen area). No major issues, a couple of hiccups but were fixed promptly by Shiko (she is great).

  • I was looking (email hidden) in NBO for 4 nights and came across Shiko's apartment. I am glad I did and here's why:
    1. Great location- very close to Junction mall (if you want some relaxation) and Karen (for all the touristy stuff)
    2. Good security- the neighborhood is secure- walled with fencing and guards. It is (email hidden) with kids playing around so know you're safe.
    3. Great apartment- very comfortable and very well furnished with everything you'll need from a Westerner's perspective (actually better equipped than places I have found in the USA)
    4. Very clean- Everything was spotless! Was very impressed. We were even asked if we needed a cleaner to come in during our stay and do laundry for us.
    5. Hospitality- I met with Lucy, Shiko's aunt who checked me in and what a hospitable lady. She was very thoughtful about our needs. Made sure we had breakfast items, water and even brought us flowers. I felt every comfortable around her and she allayed my fears about security (I just tend to be a little cautious when in NBO).
    6. Communication- Very prompt and courteous. Shiko was very responsive and checked on us to see if we were doing well.
    7. Great for families - very comfortable for a family. Has a nice pool when you want your kids to go release some energy.

I would definitely recommend this place and plan to stay again. Thanks Shiko and Lucy for letting us (email hidden).

  • I stayed at Shiko's place few days. Everything was perfect. Shiko is an extremly good host and very flexible. The apartment was exactly such what the photos are showing. The whole apartment is totally clean everywhere. The househelp woman was very kind too. The neighbourhood is safe and the Nakumatt is near. The taxi guy is a very nice, reliable and accurate. Of course Shiko arranged him too. :) I was already n few Kenyan apartments but this was one of best. Thank you so much again dear Shiko. If i come back then i sure will choose your place again.

  • I stayed at Shiko's place for a month with three others and could not have been happier with the place. The photos are very accurate and Shiko is an extremely helpful and gracious host. She helped us find transportation and also had cleaners come twice a week. the apartment is also a short drive from Junction Mall, which is a one-stop-shop for anything you might need.

  • While the apartment is good and is easily accessible from Ngong Road, we had a bad experience in the hands of a ruthless lady by the name Lucy Gichuru. On Monday Jan 13, I requested to extend our stay to Sunday Jan 19 instead of Saturday. Shiko accepted and made it complementary given that we checked in two days late and never requested a refund. On Tuesday Jan 14, Shiko called me around 4pm and said the owner was shocked to find the house filthy and decided not to host us up to sunday. I explained that we have two kids 2&3 years who could throw things around and offered to pay for saturday but Shiko declined saying it was not about money. I asked to speak to the owner but Shiko said the owner didn't want to speak to us. I called my wife who noticed Lucy driving out when she was entering the apartment complex and I asked why the house was so dirty. She said the house is cleaner than it was when we checked in. I suspected Lucy was the owner and I called her and stated what my wife told me. Intrestingly, Lucy came into the apartment without notifying us and when she came the cleaning lady had just completet cleaning the house. With these facts, Lucy apologized and said Shiko misrepresented her and Shiko never told her our extension to sunday was complementary. Lucy expected to collect payment for the extra day but offered complementary because Shiko had already approved it. Though we were dissappointed, we just requested both Shiko and Lucy to be careful in the way they deal with guests. On Thursday, Jan 16, Lucy called me around 5pm and said our electric usage was way above average and she wanted us to share the cost. I declined because we were using the house just like ours. She then ordered us to check out Saturday by 10am. Because the cleaner did not come on Thursday, I told Lucy we may end up with wet laundary but she said we have to check out at that time anyway. On saturday, we folded wet launday and left at 9.45am. Prior to our leaving, Lucy called around 9am and asked us to stay until the laudary had dried. This was not possible because we had movers outside waiting for us. I think Lucy and Shiko never expected that we will be cooking at home everyday but that is what we like even while in the USA. They didn’t have to give us a complementary stay, but they had no reason to ruin our vacation by extending our stay and then abruptly retracting it at the 11th hour. I think Lucy is mostly driven by greed but she shouldn’t take it to innocent guests. PROSPECTIVE GUESTS, BE CAREFULL, THESE HOSTS ARE UNPREDICTABLE.

    Response from Shiko:

After all is said and done, we apologize for the entire fiasco. We're sorry he felt as though he did not enjoy his stay in Kenya. We tried our very best to accommodate him. We will do better and work on our communication.
We also acknowledge that our power and water heating services had a problem when he checked in, which we resolved the same day.
Aside from that, we really felt that the house was not taken care of during period of stay, which we voiced to him. The power bills at the end of his stay were double our monthly charges. He had extra guests sleeping at the house without informing us. By the end of his stay, we felt that we could not afford a complementary day with him, which we told him a few days before checkout.
It was a learning experience nonetheless, and now we know better.

  • We truly enjoyed our stay in Shiko's apartment in Ngong Road. Shiko and Lucy are very good hosts. They are very helpful, prompt and reliable. They thought of every little detail that a tourist could use during the stay. They provided tea, coffee, sugar, salt, clean bottle water, soap, dishwashing soap, etc. they even thought of black outs and provided a very good rechargable light . They also gave us a mobile phone with a simcard and some credits to use during our stay which made communication very easy for us. Internet and digital TV were very efficient.

The apartment is very modern and has beautiful African furniture and ornaments. It has three large bedrooms and very comfortable beds with very clean bedsheets.

The cleaning service was amazing. Our clothes and dishes were washed and the house was cleaned really well. We really felt at home during our stay. Security was very good and the location of the house is very close to the major shopping centres like Karen shopping mall and Nakumat Junction. During peak hour the traffic was hectic but we could easily avoid travelling during peak hours since we were on holiday.

The air here is so fresh and Ngong forest is so beautiful. Having our breakfast in the balcony looking at the beautiful forest is something that we'll definitely miss when we get back home. We'll definitely come back here to stay. The neighbourhood is so lovely, people around are very friendly and warm. Clean and manicured gardens and pool of the blocks are so nice. We strongly recommend this home away home to everyone.
