Hidden high above the beautiful city of Rethymnon, on a road seldom traveled you will find the sleepy village of Monopari. Here time stands still while the handful of shepherds move their flocks from pasture to pasture. Ancient oaks stand shoulder to shoulder with olive laden trees. Eagles, buzzards and vultures hang high in the sky riding the warn up drafts. Here you will find our Paradise hide-away in the shadow of an 11th Century Pirate castle once occupied by the Duke of Malta.
This season we have added a new balcony and double doors, so you can sit and relax whilst enjoying your coffee and watch the local wildlife.
Situated only 12km from Rethymnon's beach's and historic town you can spend your days discovering the narrow streets and beautiful Froteza. Travel the 20 km south through dramatic gorges and you fall straight into the Libian sea.
We are ideally situated for birdwatchers walkers and cyclists or those of you how just wants peace and quiet all will be made more than welcome. Here time moves slowly and the hustle an bustle of everyday life is soon forgotten to the harmonic chorus of the Cretan countryside.
Become part of our peaceful household for a while and enjoy the unspoiled atmosphere of our old stone house. Browse through our books and lose the days in a world of your own making.
We offer a clean and comfortable room with views of the castle and your own private bath room.
To ice the cake we have a generous size swimming pool for you to cool of in after a long days relaxation, or sit in the courtyard under the shade of the hanging vines. Prepare to be welcomed by our friendly dogs and lovable cats who will all help you relax and enjoy your stay. If you fancy a night out perhaps you'd like to join our host, who sings in the local towns and entertains the many tourists and locals during the year. Who knows you might even end up in one of the hosts novels or children's story's. We are a working household and spend almost every week selling our wares at craft fairs and local produce markets with a range of our fresh made bread, pies salads or sample our home made wine and other delights.
We can offer you a fresh simple breakfast (at a small extra cost) and depending on singing commitments maybe an evening meal. Most of our vegetables are from our own garden or are sourced locally.
This is for the more discerning traveler not wanting the package style of holiday but you will leave relaxed and refreshed.
Crete is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which afford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. After all, it's among the finest in the world and has established Crete as one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. And, of course, the island's historic importance in today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization with important archaeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is evidenced by the tens of thousands of visitors to these sites each year.
However, Crete is the largest island in Greece - the fifth largest in the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than 8,000 square kilometers, there are many other jewels just waiting to be discovered by the more adventurous explorers of holiday treasures.
If you haven’t visited Crete yet, this summer may be the time to come and discover this fascinating Greek island. If it captures your heart, don’t worry. Come back next year and Crete will welcome you once more with its smiling Cretan sun, the sounds of the Cretan lyre, the scents of orange blossom and jasmine, a slice of cool red watermelon and a glass of iced raki.
We highly recommend if you wish to come and stay with us you hire a car as the bus time table is limited and runs twice a day early AM and afternoon. This will also give you more freedom to explore our beautiful surroundings with the south coast only 30 mins drive you can access the smaller beaches there in no time at all.
David and Clare hope to see you soon.
David was extremely supportive to us in the preparation of the travel - we found our way to their charming house in the middle of the night and they welcomed us with a smile and raki. David made a very beautiful "wake up call" for our wedding anniversary, singing lovesongs life in the backyard! David & Clare prepared great breakfast with various & extremely delcious home made food: unbeatable!!! They are very open minded, careful and giving. Humour, courage and curiosity seem to be the root of their power and joy ... We were happy to get in touch with this in the "middle of nowhere" ;-) MERCI!
We had a lovely stay here, Clare and David made us feel very welcome in their beautiful home, it was a shame that we couldn't stay longer, we hope to return one day....
Thank you David and Clair for your warm hospitality making our stay comfortable and pleasant. We felt included in your home and cared for as guests. Your homemade breads, wine and vegetables from the garden enriched our stay. I very much enjoyed my walk in the countryside. We look forward to a return for spring wildflowers!

David and Claire have a real magical hidden retreat. The surroundings are so beautiful and the place is so peaceful. It is the perfect place to retreat and rest. In the morning they serve an enormous and tasty breakfast. They use all fresh and local products. If you are an animal lover. This is the place to be. They have a lot of rescue cats and dogs. All very cute animals, each with a totally different character. Claire and David are such nice people, they really feel like very good friends. They make you feel at ease and they really want you to feel at home with them. We definitely want to come back and stay with them again.
David and Clare's hospitality is second to none. Their breakfast is simply the best we had in Crete - beautiful bread baked by David, fabulous produce picked from garden, little treats cooked by Clare, not only delicious but presented with so much care.
Our bedroom had wonderful views over surrounding countryside and a lovely little terrace to sit and read. En-suite bathroom with loads of hot water.
David and Clare cannot do enough for you, their cottage is charming and we will certainly return.
Clare and David make the world a better place to be. I am deeply touched by their genuine kindness and love for every creature around them - including their guests. I came as a stranger and left as a friend - is there anything better than this? Thank you Clare and David for letting me share your life!
I will come back because I left a part of my heart with you.
Thank you for a wonderful stay in a beautiful house with Cretan, English and Irish spirit, where they live together friendly and warm two-legged and four-legged hosts. We look forward to the next meeting, very happy to come again.
We came as strangers and went as friends. David and Claire are such an easy-going and friendly couple that we had a great stay there. The appartement really is magical and hidden in a small village, but still only 20 minutes away from the big City Rethymnio and about 30 minutes to some great beaches. They make you feel like its your own home, you can swim in the pool, enjoy the awesome breakfast on the inner terrace or just sit on your balcony and have a glass of their wine. The room was very nice and clean too, so before this becomes too long: just go there, you will Not regret it. Thanks for everything, Philipp & Darleen
