It was a nice stay at Hitomi's place. The neighborhood is a quiet place at the suburb of Kyoto, do note to take the local trains instead of rapid trains which will not stop at Hokata station. Hitomi is a very easy going lady. I don't feel any uneasiness when living with the host. I enjoyed my holiday and will recommend this place to others.
Hitmoi was a nice host. It was like staying at your aunts, if your aunt is Japanese and lives in Kyoto. Her house is nice but very tight. I was the only one staying there at the time but I know she does have up to 6 people staying there and can imagine people tripping over each other. My room had a single bed an air conditioner unit and wifi. The essentials. The meals were nice but honestly I wouldn't race back to her place for them. Dinner at 7 means dinner at 7. Don't come at 715 and expect food. She's not a restaurant. My dinner consisted of everything you could cook with a microwave. One plus is her place is blocks away from a rail station and a convince store. But trains do stop at midnight and she works so if you plan on tearing it up in town this might not be the place for you. Taxis are expensive from Kyoto to her place. If you plan on going out and experiencing the night life I wouldn't stay here but if you're just looking for a place to sleep after a day of sightseeing it's fine. She respects your privacy and that's what I liked the most.
First note: she does live in a suburb, not the central city, but I figured that going in. The living arrangement is very nice. The main thing that soured the experience for me was this: I was coming home and accidentally got on a slightly longer route than necessary (typical of navigating a foreign city), so I came home at 7:50 instead of 7:30. I had told Hitomi I would be home for dinner. Instead of just making food or storing it or something, she actively refused to provide me any food when I came home. Since there are no restaurants nearby, that meant I was sent to bed hungry, which is just not an appropriate interaction between a host and a guest. I understand that I was a little late, but it was not as though I kept her up or was at all intentionally disrespectful. This would not be a way to treat a guest even if I had not payed for and planned on this dinner. I would not recommend staying with Hitomi.
Hitomi has a lovely home in a quiet part of Kyoto. She was a great host, teaching me Japanese phrases and making dinner both night. I enjoyed my first time in Kyoto and would recommend to anyone who wants to stay in Kyoto.
Hitomi's home was a wonderful place to stay and to meet fellow travelers. The location is a sweet-spot for those looking to see the Kyoto, Uji, and Nara areas while still enjoying a quiet, friendly neighborhood and local train station. Every night she provided nice Japanese meals which ended up being mini-parties will all the other guests to discuss and learn about each other.
I would definitely love to visit again the next time I am in the Kyoto area! Thank you for helping make my first trip to Japan great.
The host was really nice and accommodating! A very pleasant and thoughtful Japanese lady :) It is also convenient, being only a few stops away from must-see sites such as the Byodoin Temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine. Feel free to ask the host about the various places to visit!
