Here's house was absolutely lovely and a perfect place for a laid back family weekend. The garden was lovely, with great bird-watching (my dad really got into it) and the house was mostly baby proof which was a relief to the adults! Everything was simple, well-maintained, and comfortable.
I will echo all the previous reviews and say that the house and property are beautiful. The kitchen is especially well equipped, and you can tell that the owners actually cook there since it is stocked with high quality pots and pans, etc.
No one has mentioned this, so it may be just us, but we weren't fans of what some reviews call Herb's "pro-active" communication. Everything was fine when I spoke with him prior to the trip- he let me know the check in procedure and explained he was available if we had any questions during our stay. I said I'd be sure to call if anything came up, but we were 3 couples gathering for our friends' wedding, and our days were pretty much filled with wedding preparation and activities. Everything was fine, and then Herb called the land line at the house 3 times in 2 days to "check in" with us. One of the calls was at 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday, and it woke me up, along with the rest of the house since there are upwards of 4 phones, one in each bedroom. He called again Sunday morning and I thought something was wrong, but no, he just wanted to remind me to read the house instructions when leaving, and to "turn off the oven." Really?! I found that these calls stepped over the line from necessary communication into intrusion. Also note: the house is air conditioned, but it is supplied by 2 wall units, not central AC. I only mention this because if you want the air conditioning to come into the 2 downstairs bedrooms, you will need to sleep with the door open.
I'm sorry that Nicole feels that we were intrusive. We generally contact our guests at the beginning of their stay to make sure that all is in order, and to answer any questions or concerns that they may have. Also, we like to touch base with them when they're checking out.
We may be at the house the very day that the guests checks out, or we may not be there until a week later. A faucet left running, or the oven left on could be serious. In fact, we have had a guest leave the oven on. It ended up being on for a week!
As it turns out, Nicole's party left a light on in one room, and the ceiling fan on in another room, leaving Nicole's criticism of "intrusiveness" somewhat ironic. The light and the fan were on for a week.
In summary, we contact our guests on their arrival to welcome them, and on their departure to ensure the safety of our property. Beyond that, we leave them to their own devices, unless they ask for our help. We don't feel that this is "intrusive".
This was a fantastic place. Herb was helpful and make everything easy and first rate.
I would recommend this house to anyone who wants to stay in the Woodstock area!
Our stay in Chris&Herb's house was truly nice!
First of all, Chris and Herb are very attentive hosts. There is a detailed instructions about certain a things, (trash, lighting, heat etc) which we found very helpful. Little notes make it easy to find everything.
The house itself is arranged very well, it doesn't look big, yet it's very spacious. One area flows into another- from kitchen to dining area into cozy and homey living room.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all sorts of pots, dishes and utensils. We easily made a great Thanksgiving dinner, as if it was at home.
There is also a great collection of table games and books. Our 4-year-old had the best time.
Comfortable bedrooms, everything is clean and neat.
The place is done with love and care, and seems to be a great choice for a country vacation.
There are plenty of hiking, skiing, nature walking in the vicinity.
For the nearest trails just walk across the street to the Ashokan center, though there are more challenging hikes within 20min drive.

We had a wonderful stay at Chris&Herb's place. We confirm all the positive reviews others already wrote. Everything was in its right place, the house is fully equipped and functional, small labels attached to the switches with recommendations of how to use the different appliances and what light switches turn on or off which lights, something that saves lots of time in an unfamiliar surrounding. All in all, a delightful experience! Highly recommendable!
Besides, I want to note Herb’s kindness, who supplied us with addresses and tips to enhance our experience and make the best out of the lovely area, which is delightful, especially this time of the year -the fall- with all its beautiful foliage colors.
Herb and Chris thank you very much!
We just had a wonderful stay at Herb and Chris' beautiful home near the Ashokan Reservoir over the Labor Day weekend. Chris reached out to us ahead of time by phone to give us all the information we needed, including directions to the house and to the supermarket to stop at on the way from NYC. The home is beautiful. Very, very clean and stocked with absolutely everything you might need - the kitchen is just great for cooking for a family. So nice to have the staples (oil, sugar, spices, condiments) so we didn't have to bring everything with us.
And the garden...so beautiful and peaceful, full of hummingbirds and butterflies. We spent quite a bit of time sitting outside chatting and enjoying the lovely garden.
The house is about 20 minute drive from Woodstock and a little further to Phoenicia so quite centrally located for great hiking, shopping, dining.
All the beds were all very comfortable with lovely bedding and towels provided. The ceiling fans worked great when it warmed up later in the weekend.
Communication was great. I had a quick question about a stuck balcony door and I was able to get in touch with Herb/Chris right away and they walked me through the trick to opening it. I highly recommend this beautiful home and plan to return to it in the future.
We had a lovely stay! We were two couples and two babies around a year old and everyone had enough room to roam and privacy. The babies appreciated the carpeted floors, many butterflies, and ceiling fan. The adults appreciated how CLEAN the floors (and everything else, too) were; the garden with flowers, cardinals, and humming birds; the different spaces for hanging out; the amazingly close proximity to the Ashokan Center (we attended a music festival there); and the well-stocked kitchen (we are buying one of those pancake griddles!). We will be back! Thanks again!
