NAUPAKA GUEST HOUSE:
UNIQUE FLOOR PLAN, Quiet and private locale. 23 rd Avenue. Keaau, HI 96749
EIN (phone number hidden)
Located on a lush one acre lot at the end of 23rd Avenue in the exotic Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision and bordering the Maku'u Forest Reserve, with a private driveway and gate, The Naupaka Guest House has so much to offer travelers to The Big Island:
We are located close to many popular East Hawaii Attractions:
5 Min drive down to gorgeous ocean vistas , for lovely evening walks, and even some 'swimmable' tidepools for the adventurous; 20 Min to Hilo and its popular Bay front restaurants, galleries, museums and shops, 25 minutes to gorgeous beaches just outside Hilo (with lifeguards), 45 to Volcanoes Park; and the must-go-to famous Sunday Maku'u Farmers Market is only 5 min away, with great food, shopping and weekly entertainment.
Many of our guests actually make the house their base for their entire island stay, as Kona is only a 1 ½ hour drive via Saddle Road, making this a good spot for a few day trips to swim with dolphins or see a few sites on the West side of the island~ SEE REVIEWS from another site (one we pay to advertise on), at end of this description ~
$100 per night for up to 2 people*
$15 per additional guest*
NO CHARGE FOR A BABY :)
This is how we now operate the “Naupaka Guest House”: Your party would be our only guests, with exclusive use of all living areas, including the living room and attached screened lanai, kitchen, dining room, bathroom(s) and laundry. Depending on the number of people in your group and their needs, we open up the number of bedrooms needed. All 5 bedrooms have separate and individually keyed entries, so friends, couples or extended family traveling together can enjoy personal privacy and solitude and also full security in their own separate entry-uniquely keyed bedrooms!
NOTE: We no longer rent out rooms as a hostel would, which is how we began on AirBnB; meaning there is no longer a 'shared kitchen,' as referred to in our first review. We decided it was best for us to rent to only one group at a time, even if the group is only one person. So, there is ONE kitchen for exclusive use by your group.
As you will see from our photos, the guest house consists of a four-building configuration of cottages, all connected by decking and child-safe lattice railings, forming a small courtyard in the center that serves as a calming meditation garden, or just a lovely sight to see when you exit your room each morning before breakfast. The outside of the cottages are flanked by lush landscaping ~ including a few fruit trees, yours for the picking when in season (orange, lime, grapefruit, avocados and breadfruit).
Two cottages contain the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms, another cottage houses the living areas and kitchen, and the fourth houses the laundry room and second bathroom.
Since all bedrooms are in cottages separate from the cottage with the living areas, this separation allows those in your group who want to socialize on the screened lanai or watch a DVD or TV, or chill in the massage chair in the living room (or even prepare a late night snack or early breakfast) to do so while allowing those who want to sleep, well…to be able to sleep! :)
The cottages feature 5 Hawaiian-themed bedrooms, 4 of which sleep 8 in regular beds, 10 in bedrooms with use of full-sized futon in 5th bedroom. With groups of eleven or twelve, one to two persons can use the queen-sized sleeper sofa in living room, or we have twin air mattresses for use in rooms or on enclosed lanai (your choice).
Also, for those traveling with a baby or toddler, we have a Pack n Play type crib, highchair and baby bath.
During its 2011 conversion into a vacation rental, along with furnishings and Hawaiian décor, renovations made by us included new flooring, new stove/oven, new washer/dryer and refrigerator, new ceiling fans throughout, plus upgraded plumbing & electrical (all are to code & completely permitted), plus the addition of child safety rails and an on-demand hot water system (hot water never runs out!).
Additionally, our water filtration system is UV – meaning safe to drink and wash in, and no need to buy bottled water! Plus, we have TWO catchment tanks, unlike most properties in the area, so water never runs out!
Here is how the bedrooms/cottages are arranged (see photos):
Two bedrooms, each with private entrance, are located in their own cottage and share a bathroom with a large walk-in shower. These are Da Slippahs Room, the largest bedroom (with Queen bed) and the smallest bedroom, Da Hula Room (Full futon), making these two rooms and adjoining bath into a lovely petite suite for families with small children!
The remaining 3 bedrooms are located across the courtyard in their own cottage, all with private and uniquely-keyed entrances. They include: The Aloha Shirt Room (Full bed), The Na Lei Room (Full bed) and The Flowers Room (two Twin beds).
These three bedrooms share a full shower-bath combo in a third adjoining building, only steps away along the connecting deck yet in a locale private enough to not wake others (with blue lamps for peaceful night-time lighting along the short path to the bathroom). The laundry room is in the same building with this second bath.
~ Plus, each bedroom includes a reading lamp, sitting area, radio and power surge protection outlet strip!
All guestroom key-rings include a key to the gate and one for the attached building which houses the kitchen, dining and living/relaxation areas ~ including a comfy family room, with its loveseat and queen-sized sleeper sofa plus a VERY popular full-body programmable massage chair and cable TV/DVD player and collection, all next to the adjoining screened lanai with wicker loveseat/coffee table and large patio table.
There are 2 eating areas; a dining room that seats 6, plus the very nearby screened lanai with its amply-sized patio table, with additional seating for 4. The living room and lanai coffee tables can accommodate groups of 11-12 that may want to eat all at the same time. Additionally, for out-door food prep; there is a table in the nearby covered shed that can be pulled out for you for use next to the kettle BBQ!
For Web users: Wi-Fi is free and accessible throughout the property ~ no password required.
Another feature guests particularly enjoy: the property attracts birds, which you will hear singing throughout the daytime; and hosts a night-time coqui-frog chorus to lull you to sleep! Coquis are very small nocturnal frogs that live in surrounding foliage, and are found throughout the Big Island. You may never see one, but they have a very sweet mating call at night~
First aid kit, bug spray and flashlights, plus fire extinguisher (and ear plugs for any super light sleepers) are located in the kitchen area. We have an electrical smoke-alarm system throughout the cottages (if one goes off, they all do...so, candles/incense burning/etc is prohibited). This is a SMOKE-FREE home. Smoking is only permitted if 20+ feet from buildings. The EMS system in our area is via 9-1-1, with the closest EMS providers being only about 4 miles away. There is also an urgent care facility within 20 minutes, in the town of Keaau and full hospital in Hilo.
We live nearby in a small home, very privately located/not visible to renters & one or the other or both of us remain available via land-line or cell phone for any type of help if need arises. We also have many friends in the subdivision. We have even had neighbors’ family stay with us, for weddings and reunions~
After check-in, you’ll probably only see us when one of us walks along the driveway to get the morning paper. We always encourage our renters to call us, though, for any reason!
Check out - 11AM; or by prior arrangement.

PS: PLEASE NOTE: This property is not a 'bnb,' as guests buy their own food for use in the fully-equipped kitchen. There are markets and take-out establishments within a 10-15 minute drive. However, we would be happy to purchase some groceries for you if you are expecting a very late arrival.
A few of our ALL 5-star REVIEWS FROM ANOTHER SITE:
We arrived late and couldn't really see the property, but the next morning, we woke up to a tropical paradise! The guest house sits on a lush, green acre (it looks like an acre) of beautiful foliage (great for pictures). Michael and Gina live close by, but you can barely see their rooftop, giving you complete privacy. The guest house was perfect for our family of 10, ranging in ages from 1 to 60+. The big kids enjoyed having their own room, and everyone gathered in the living room/kitchen for breakfast and movie nights. I lost my wallet and Michael offered his business address for FEDEX to deliver replacement credit cards. He also gave us many ideas for places to eat and visit, secrets that only the locals would know. Gina is the creative mastermind, tending to all the small details, like beach towels, bug spray, and even guest umbrellas! The coquis didn't bother me, as I was too exhausted from the day's adventures. The kids had fun trying to catch them, and the geckos, in the "zen" garden. No need to over-pack, as detergent is provided in the laundry room. There's so much to see and do in the area, including the nearby Farmers Market (ask Michael or Gina). Our family truly enjoyed the Naupaka Guest House, and highly recommend it! The pictures on the website don't do it justice!
Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Aloha, Ann! It is lovely to know that we were able to provide you and your family with all you needed to make your Hawaiian vacation a comfortable experience. We were especially happy for you when we learned your wallet had been found, even though you had already needed to cancel cards beforehand. No trip to the DMV needed, though, upon your return to California! :) Thanks so much for your thoughtful review! Sending lots of aloha to you and yours, Michael and Gina
Very nice stay with extended family. It was a beautiful location and the separation of the rooms gave everyone a little bit of privacy but we could also come together in the common living room. The Da Slippahs Room was perfect for those traveling with small children so that you could keep them close but they had their own separate sleeping area.
Recommended for: Families with young children.
Owner response: Aloha Connie~ Mahalo for your review! We are happy to have been able to help make your visit to the Big Island a pleasant experience. We know how important a little privacy is when traveling in a group! Glad, too, that the little room off Da Slippah's Room worked out well for you and your children. Wishing you and yours all the best, Michael and Gina
There were so many lovely parts of this rental, I don't know what to list first! Maybe it's the landscape, a former foliage farm with fruit trees throughout that horticulturalists a like us go nuts over. Or maybe it's the incredible massage chair that our 11 year-old son wouldn't move from. Or maybe it's the family style courtyard set-up that provided privacy as well as intimacy. Regardless, we had a wonderful time and were close to everything we wanted to do.
The owners are kind and knowledgeable too. Thank you so much for having us - we're already trying to plan a trip back!
Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Aloha Jocelyn, Mahalo for staying at our Guest House. We enjoyed meeting you all. We are glad you had a good time exploring the Big Island. We look forward to seeing you all again in the future. a hui hou, Michael & Gina
Interaction with Guests
We allow our guests space to enjoy their vacation, but remain available to answer any questions/concerns. We live on the other side of the one acre property in a one bedroom home, with its own gate and driveway passing by one side of the guest house. Our house is not visible to the guest house and there are no neighbors' houses visible either. In the mornings, one of us will quietly walk along the guest house driveway to get the morning paper (delivery box is at the end of that driveway), but will not disturb guests. If you see us, you are always welcome to stop us to chat.
Hawaiian Paradise Park is the second largest privately-owned subdivision in the state. There are no 'track homes' here! Many lots are still not built on. We are very privately located in 'the park,' as we have a non-built on tree-laden one acre lot on one side of us and a forest reserve on the other, which creates a lot of privacy. Also, the front of the property is lined with foliage/palms, so there is no view of the neighbor's property across the road, and the other side of the guest house is bordered by our shed, more foliage and a greenhouse (our house is at the end of those).
Rental car required.
Other Things to Note
Water is drinkable, as we have a commercial-grade filtration system with UV bulb.
NO SMOKING within 20 feet of buildings.
Quiet time (outdoors) is 11PM - 7AM. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Please do not launder comforters or throws, nor wash white towels with colored beach/kitchen towels. Also, please use our stain-releasing spray on ANY stains on linens you may wish to wash while renting, to prevent stains from setting.
Recycling must be rinsed out before placing in recycling bins, to keep critters away ~
Where do we begin? Michael and Gina graciously and warmly met with us late because of when our flight arrived. The rooms were clean and perfect for our family of seven. In the morning, we explored the flora searching for geckos on and around the property which was a great way to start our vacation. Many nights we were lulled to sleep by the rhythmic chirping of Coqui frogs and the rain. It was beautiful and quiet and wonderful to have the ability to cook and wash clothes during our two weeks here.
After a couple of days, Michael came by just to ensure things were going well and helped us to pick some avocados in time to let them ripen before we left. We also enjoyed the fresh oranges and lemons.
In addition to the beautiful property, our hosts (Michael and Gina) were responsive to questions about where to go and where to eat. The one time that we informed them that the DVD player didn't appear to work- they promptly replaced it with a brand new unit.
They were the perfect hosts and almost intuited our needs at times which made our stay easy and relaxing. They even strung lights and a few ornaments on a palm tree in the enclosed patio for us to celebrate Christmas! Many mornings we felt so relaxed and at home that we didn't leave as early as we wanted to explore the Island.
There are too many great things to list about this property nestled at the end of a short well-maintained dirt road to adequately cover, suffice to say, if (when) we find ourselves back on the Big Island we will look at staying here again.
Everything about our stay was perfect! The accommodations were well suited to our family needs. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the kitchen and living spaces were wonderful as well with all the comforts of home. Michael and Gina were so kind and accommodating and went out of our way to make our stay enjoyable. We loved the beautiful grounds and privacy, yet the location provided easy access to all of our destinations. We would highly recommend these accommodations and look forward to staying here again on our return to the island. Thank you, Michael and Gina, for making us feel so welcomed!
Great place with a bunch of separate bedrooms. Owners are very nice. Very private country side place surrounded by fruit trees.

About the Host, Michael And Gina
We love people & sharing this beautiful place and island with visitors. We have hosted wonderful people from all over the world. (Japan, France, Switzerland, etc} as well as Kamaʻāina from Oahu & Maui. We are new to Air BnB, but many reviews of "Naupaka Guest House" can be found on our listing at Vacation Rental by Owner ~
A bit about us: Michael left High Tech 14 years ago to live in a place he loves. He knows where all of the best places to go are and happily shares this info with guests. He is also owner of one of the few remaining Independent Music Stores in the State, and plays guitar with several groups (& even happily loans his Ukelele to guests if they enjoy playing)! He is also a newly licensed Real Estate Agent (July, 2013), as he also enjoys helping people find their dream homes.
Gina is a housewife, writer and Manager & main housekeeper of the guest house.
We have been a couple for over 3 1/2 years now, make a happy and productive team, and became newlyweds in May, 2013!
We hope to share this wonderful piece of paradise with you.
Aloha from The Big Island of Hawai'i,
Michael & Gina
