Just 15 minutes up the road from the surfing town Dominical, this quiet mountain home is perfectly situated within a tropical jungle landscape complete with a pleasant breeze and an open air feel.

The Space

Enjoy tropical trees, plants and flowers and watching toucans, parrots, falcons, and butterflies that visit the grounds in the early morning and afternoons from hammocks and cozy chairs. Every morning the howler monkeys can be heard welcoming the day. The 1100 ft elevation ensures a more comfortable temperature, even when it's steamy at the beach. The house is not air conditioned, but ceiling fans and the house’s location allows for comfortable air movement.

The mostly-shaded deck (email hidden) for relaxing, drinking Costa Rican coffee, reading books, and watching the jungle. The dining area consists of an oversized table overlooking the deck and green jungle beyond. The kitchen has granite countertops an island, as well as a small table and sitting area.

Hikes can leave directly from the house. One steep trail leads down the back hillside to a small creek. Another goes down to the headwaters of the Baru River for a dip or to hike to amazing waterfalls in either direction, upstream or (website hidden) well as the most photographed waterfall in Costa Rica, Nauyaca Falls. Other activities include hiking, surfing, kayaking, rafting, horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, zip lining, going to the market, bird and wildlife watching, going to the market, as well as relaxing and soaking up the simple life.

Sleeping Accommodations

The home sleeps six people comfortably. Two bedrooms are equipped with full sized beds and the third bedroom has two twin beds. We have two single mattresses that can be placed on the floor either in an extra room or out in the yurt. The adjacent yurt also has an awesome deck overlooking the jungle and a full size bed. Two bathrooms are located on either side of the house with hot water. There is also an sublime outdoor shower.

Children are welcome, but the house may be unsuitable for families with small toddlers or children who would climb on the deck (website hidden) Accommodations

Make use of the fully-equipped indoor kitchen by cooking up stir fries and fresh fish catch bought in Dominical. Our caretaker is available to prepare fresh vegetarian lunch or dinners to order in advance. Produce is largely organic and purchased locally at the farmers' market in San Isidro, where we buy free-range eggs, goat milk/cheese and kefir, organic brown rice, and fresh corn tortillas.

Internet available thru the pretty good local 3G phone network, but for WiFi a trip to town is necessary.

**Please look under the tab "House Rules" for additional information about visiting the area.

Other Things to Note

In early 2014 we will start hosting small retreats and events. A separate yoga/dance studio with attached facilities for extra sleeping and kitchen are now available. Please contact us if you are interested in holding an event or retreat.

  • Myself, my husband, and our two friends had an absolutely wonderful time at Casanada. This house is beautiful, the view is breathtaking, and the sounds of the jungle are calming. We couldn't have asked for better accommodations. I can't even begin to tell you how many minutes and hours were spent swinging in the hammocks, watching the horse graze in the valley. Chandra is extraordinarily helpful and a wonderful resource. Jerry gave us useful instructions for the getting to the house and made the whole experience stress-free. We also loved the little town of Playa Dominical. Fingers crossed we can get back sometime!

Our stay at Jungle Home Casananda embodied everything that AirBnB stands for! We were welcomed by the most wonderful, sweet, funny and helpful host! She provided great suggestions and even assisted me to the hospital in town for stitches! She was an absolute joy to be around and the best company and friend anyone could ask (website hidden) do NOT do this home justice! From the artistic decor to the private waterfall - everything was flawless. We spent our mornings doing yoga to the sound of holler monkeys and eating fresh fruit from the surrounding garden (starfruit, bananas, papaya ....)

We would LOVE to come back and visit Jungle home Casanada. We honestly believe there is no better "bang for your buck" in the Dominical area! We were a short 10-15 min drive to the beach and 30-40 min drive from the nearest hospital and large mountain town.

If you have the opportunity to stay here - do not hesitate. It will be the best decision of your trip. If you are looking for relaxation and serenity - this is your spot!

  • Casananda was our second of 3 nights in Costa Rica.
We were met at the driveway by Jeff (one of the owners) and Chandra the caretaker. We were shown around and Chandra gave us directions for use of the kitchen and rooms.
The place is very beautiful and just as pictured! We had the whole place to ourselves. Bed comfortable, mountain breezes, nice shower/bathroom, indoor/outdoor eating areas, places to sit and sleep outside, and walking distance to waterfalls! Chandra showed us the washing machine so we could do a load of laundry. Dryer being out of service, we hung our clothes on the clothesline in the jungle air to dry! How fun! We could hear the howler monkeys above the house in the hills at sunset (beautiful) and sometimes in the morning! Cichadaes, geckos, and birds all over singing away. The views are amazing of the mountains and jungle all around with the valley down below. We visited the white "unicorn" below the house a few times to pet and feed it bananas. Enjoyed walking the dirt roads and birdwatching. A steep hike down behind the house led us to a little waterfall and a place to splash some cool water on us. Pretty trees and a blue morpho butterfly greeted us on our hike.
Our last day there we drove down the hill a short way, parked, and walked down the river quite a ways. Highly recommend it as there are many swimming holes and little waterfalls along the way. You can hike to Nayauca from there as well. I would suggest like Teal mentioned to use watershoes. I had my hiking shoes, but had to remove them from time to time when I couldn't rock jump without getting wet! Lots of rock jumping, but fun!
Would be fun to get there in the morning, pack a lunch, and make a day of it. We saw noone on our short hike/swims.
We definitely were sad to leave Casananda. It was our last 3 full days before driving back to the Alajuela airport area.
We did the Nayauca horsebackriding tour (just down the main road from Casananda) and the Manuel Antonio Park Reserve (about 40 minutes away). Both highly recommended as we saw more animals and birds on both trips than anywhere else.
We saw two macaws and two white faced monkeys at our lunch stop horsebackriding back from the falls. Amazing scenery and the gorgeous waterfall/pool was like a dream! At Manuel Antonio we saw three types of monkeys, two types of sloths, two types of bats, many insects/butterflys, racoons, and a baby blue frog! The beach is gorgeous there! Recommend getting there right when they open and hiring a guide. We wouldn't have seen all those creatures without the guide, plus they have telescopes you can take photos through.
Thanks so much Jeff, Jerry, and Teal for sharing your beautiful home with us! Thank you Chandra for your help!
We will dream about returning to this magical place!

  • This place is just as magical as it looks in the pictures. You'll spend the majority of your time on the deck enjoying the cool morning and early evening breezes. We spent every morning drinking our coffee on the deck listening and watching the animals. The hosts were so helpful pretravel and during the trip. They were invaluable!! We hope to visit again.

  • This home is in an absolutely beautiful location. Mountains, rainforest, waterfalls, monkeys, toucans, it was all there. To have all these attributes you need to understand that the location is remote but oh so worthwhile. There were 5 of us at the home for the week and there was plenty of space. The home has a covered deck that overlooks the pond and the mountains which lets you be a part of nature while eating breakfast, reading, or just hanging out with friends. Great energy!

Make sure to get a 4 wheel drive vehicle and rent a GPS - driving is a thrill, these two tools will give you a shot at surviving.

  • Our stay (4 adults and one teenager) at Casananda was spectacular! The owners were very thorough in providing information in advance of our arrival, and the onsite caretaker, Chandra, was extremely responsive to all of our needs - offering directions when we thought we were lost, preparing a DELICIOUS vegetable coconut curry for us on the night of our arrival and answering any questions we had. The home is truly incredible and photos do not do it justice! The massive balcony from which we took coffee each morning afforded us constant views of toucans, hawks, deer, horses, parrots and spectacular sunsets. The grounds are superb and the house very well cared for with many artistic details and clean, comfortable beds. The kitchen was fully equipped and made us feel as though we were at home. We certainly look forward to returning!!

  • Our stay at Casananda was so lovely...and we wish we could have stayed SO much longer! Chandra was so helpful with welcoming us to the house, and it was more than we would've ever expected. Thoroughly enjoyed the waterfall hikes, toucans & insects that hung around the property, hammock & swing to lounge in, and the surrounding area was fun to explore. We thought it would be a great spot for a family to have as a home-base to venture out into other parts of Costa Rica & have already begun trying to convince our family to plan a trip back!

  • We spent ten days with some friends at this amazing home + property. Absolute paradise with forest trails to waterfalls, a nearby river with swimming holes, a magical yurt overlooking the forest, and only twenty minutes drive to Dominical + beaches. Thank you Chandra for your beautiful presence ** Casananda was even better than could be imagined.

  • Casananda was above and beyond our expectations. Not only did we have a fantastic natural setting, but the house was outstanding as well. Enjoyed beautiful hikes and our very own waterfall. Our hostess, Chandra, was so helpful and enjoyable to have around. We would certainly recommend staying at Casananda for those who love natural surroundings, peace and tranquility. We liked the remoteness yet also close proxminity to Plantanillo, Dominical and San Isidro as well. Hope to return again!

  • Quite possibly my favorite place on earth.
My husband and I are writers, and we stayed here for one month, Jan 15- Feb 15, 2013. The owners are a delight to deal with, and the place is pure magic. The house itself is stunning, clean, spacious, private, well designed, well appointed...the pictures here can't quite capture it. You get this incredible steady breeze that keeps the house cool during the hottest days. You might never want to leave the huge, shady deck, where you can lounge in the hammocks and watch butterflies (lots of blue morphos!), parrots and toucans and laughing falcons fly by.
And the surrounding land is great for exploring. We frequented the little waterfall near the house, and discovered (a little late) that when you explore the river further (an easy walk from the house), there are many little falls and pools where you can swim and relax.
The yurt is also a great bonus, with a very comfortable queen-sized bed, and a little platform that looks out into the canopy.
Chandra is the wonderful caretaker on the premises, and she is meticulous in her care of the home, and knows everything about the environs, hikes, etc. If you are visiting this area for the first time, you will find Chandra's expertise especially invaluable. She is also available to hire: she cooks amazing food, leads yoga classes, and gives massages. (What more could you ask for!?)
I could go on and on (did I mention the breezes?), but suffice to say, we highly recommend Casananda. It was great for our purposes -- relaxation, some excursions to waterfalls and the beach, and mostly, a quiet, private place where we could concentrate on our work. We left feeling fully refreshed, with a sense of deep relaxation, and a new appreciation for the rhythms of the jungle. We wish we had stayed for 3 months instead of 1, and we are already scheming ways to get back to Casananda. Cheers to the Meiling family and Chandra! We are grateful! Pura Vida!

I (email hidden) nurse in Denver, CO. I grew up in the Green Mountains of Vermont, where my parents still reside when they are not in Costa Rica or traveling. My parents, Abbe and Jerry, dreamed of this house in Costa Rica about 12 years ago. We have brought many people over the years that have enjoyed themselves tremendously, and I decided to help my parents share the home with you!
