Location

Athoor, Tamil Nadu, India

We are located in the Kamaraj Valley in the spurs of the Palani Hills. An altitude of 300m above sea level provides you a relatively cool pleasant tropical climate for most of the year. You can enjoy a bath in Kamarajar Lake on 10 minutes walk from the cottage.

People who love this place are, for example, people who like to go for walks or treks, birdwatchers, people who like to experience what it is to be a part of the Indian rural community, people who like India but like a break in a quiet place, people who use it as a base for day-trips, and families looking for a child-friendly and relaxing atmosphere.

Single travelers are also welcome to enjoy the homey atmosphere.

My wife Gemma and I visited India since 1980 nearly every year as back packers. After exploring this magical country for many years we took an early retirement and settled at the border of Kamarajar Lake, Athoor, Dindigul Dt., South India. We started as a family home in 1994 and are involved with educational projects, run by a local Indian NGO, funded by a Dutch Charity. When we arrived the property was barren, red soil earth strewn with rocks. Our mission over the years has been to restore the land to its natural jungle beauty and to bring back the wildlife after years of neglect and overgrazing. After much hard work, we have gotten the place looking green again and have noticed a large influx of wildlife. We then began our own small scale, “eco friendly” farm with a vegetable garden, cows, goats, rabbits, chickens, Guiney fowls, ducks, turkeys, dogs and cats. Throughout the years many friends and family came to stay with us and now we like to share it with you.

During your stay
Most of the time my wife and I are available and we like to interact with our guests. But if you prefer, you can have a maximum privacy.

We offer Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare but also European, Indonesian, Southeast Asian and Mexican dishes. The menus are set, but we try to find out in advance what the guests prefer. Because we are very small we can give our guests our full attention. For example, our vegetarian fare is not only a meal without meat, but a specially catered vegetarian version of the meal that is served that night. A lot of our food is also homegrown and homemade. We make our own jams, marmalade and breads. Also from our eco-farm we get some fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, and milk which we use to make cheese and curd.

We, a Dutch couple and our Indian staff, will look after you in a unique Dutch - Indian blend.
