The Space

One of The Mendocino Coast's most popular Airbnb destinations just got even better, and now offers an entire studio, no longer just a guest room in the main house!

The Garden at Road’s End, located just two miles from the beach at Pudding Creek in Fort Bragg is a garden lover’s paradise. Set on 8 acres in the middle of a carefully tended lush landscape, the gardens are surrounded by fields, forest, and redwood groves. As our guest, you’ll have the sense you’ve stepped into another world- one that offers peace, tranquility, and the opportunity to recharge and find your own place of inspiration.

You will be offered a private, self-contained architecturally designed studio adjacent to the main house. The 500 sq. ft. space features a comfy living area with a large sofa, table and chairs, a cozy window seat with views to the gardens, and photographs and original artwork by some of The Mendocino Coast's most renowned artists. The sleeping area includes TWO double beds, so the studio easily accommodates four, in one large, light-filled room. The well-appointed kitchenette allows you to prepare simple meals with its refrigerator, countertop convection oven, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, instant hot water tap, and blender. An array of breakfast foods, and coffee and teas are included with your accommodations. A dining table and 4 chairs allow you to eat comfortably, and a beautiful bathroom of modest proportions with a glass block shower, plus large area for hanging and storing clothes complete your accommodations. A very efficient Monitor heater will keep your room at the temperature you prefer.

A wet/dry cedar sauna, free weights and bench, hot tub and deck, outdoor shower, comfy hammock, woods trail, fire circle, wireless DSL, and plenty of places to sit throughout the gardens complement your studio space.

A separate massage studio on the property offers massage and bodywork by prior appointment with two extremely talented local professional therapists, and will help you to fully unwind and surrender into peace. Once you have a confirmed reservation you will have access to my website upon request, with contact information for both masseurs.

The gardens have played host to many garden tours, fund-raising events, and more than a dozen couples have been married in the gardens over the past 12 years. I bring my talents as an architect, landscaper, lover of Spirit, and as an innkeeper for 13 years at a retreat center in Sonoma County into play here, where I have finally found a place to live out my passion, and share it with others. My partner Alberto will see to it that your accommodations are beautifully prepared for your arrival.

We are fully licensed to operate a B&B, and our rates include an 11% hotel tax which we pay to the county, so staying with us helps to support our local economy here on the Mendocino Coast.

The Garden at Road's End is just 5 minutes from downtown with its restaurants and shops, and from the famous Glass Beach, Skunk Train, and from miles of spectacular coastline with its many beaches and hiking trails. We are a 20 minute drive along Highway One to the Victorian Village of Mendocino- a must see!

In addition to hosting over 150 guests in the guest room of the main house in the first year as an Airbnb member , we have also rented to students and visiting guest teachers of the local culinary institute for the past 4 years. Though the small guest room in the main house is no longer available, we look forward to playing unobtrusive host to those of you who feel inspired to visit and will do our best to make your stay a memorable one.

  • What a relaxing and peaceful stay we had in John's beautiful paradise. The thoughtful breakfast, romantic setting, amazing grounds and John's warm welcome made for an unforgettable experience. Loved the wonderful indoor decorating and jaw-dropping garden---so cool! Pictures do not do it justice.....We will be back! Thanks John and Alberto

  • This could be the very best AirBnB stay we've ever experienced. The incredibly romantic hot tub, the super comfortable beds, the over-the-top helpful restaurant recommendations, the beautifully decorated room, the insane mood lighting, and the delicious breakfast items all pale in comparison to the gorgeous garden surrounding the studio where we stayed. All of that combined with the gracious hospitality of our host John, and the massages we received from Paul Maeding made this an experience will never forget. In summary: stay here.

  • This is the antidote for travellers weary of corporate hotel chains. The description "Garden Paradise" is accurate. If anything, it understates the luxury we found. What a gorgeous space inside and out! I have travelled all over North America, and a bit of Asia and stayed in a wide variety of accommodations, and yet found myself laughing with delight as our host, John, gave us the overview upon arrival. What an eye for quality and detail. We enjoyed the peaceful starlit sky from the hot tub, and then had one of the most restful sleeps ever.

  • We had a wonderful time at the garden at the end of the road. Very convenient to town and hiking and exploring on the north coast. John was a great host. The cottage (it felt like a cottage) is in the most beautiful garden setting. Very quiet and relaxing. I highly recommend and look forward to coming back in the future.

  • What an amazing spot. We stayed the one night and wished we could have stayed longer!! John has certainly set the bar in regards to hosting the perfect stay. He greeted us on arrival and gave us the run down on the studio; we were very surprised to find a well stocked fridge along with fruits, cereals, etc., for breakfast.
We were free to wander his beautiful garden which was much appreciated after a long days drive.
We would highly recommend John's place as a destination; however I would say to everyone 'make sure you book more than one night!'
    Many thanks John!

What is first apparent is that I'm a passionate gardener. My training is as an architect, however, and I came to my passion later in life when I left the big city career behind and moved to a mountaintop in the mid-'80's to run a retreat center that catered to groups who were seeking answers to some of life's bigger or more elusive questions. When I left the mountain in 1998 I moved to Fort Bragg with the idea of creating something on a small scale where I could offer guests an intimate and personal sense of the healing power of nature. I've recently teamed up with AIberto who works tirelessly with me here and helps to manage the home and guest accommodations. I can't imagine anything I'd rather be doing than stewarding the gardens and property in this most beautiful part of the planet, and sharing them with others who appreciate the natural world.
