The Garden at Road’s End, located just two miles from the beach at Pudding Creek in Fort Bragg is a garden lover’s paradise. Set on 8 acres in the middle of a carefully tended lush landscape, the gardens are surrounded by fields, forest, and redwood groves. As our guest, you’ll have the sense you’ve stepped into another world- one that offers peace, tranquility, and the opportunity to recharge and find your own place of inspiration.
You will be offered a private, self-contained architecturally designed studio adjacent to the main house. The 500 sq. ft. space features a comfy living area with a large sofa, table and chairs, a cozy window seat with views to the gardens, and photographs and original artwork by some of The Mendocino Coast's most renowned artists. The sleeping area includes TWO double beds, so the studio easily accommodates four, in one large, light-filled room. A queen-sized air mattress is also available for those of you wishing to add an extra person or two. The well-appointed kitchenette allows you to prepare simple meals with its refrigerator, countertop convection oven, toaster, microwave, coffee maker, instant hot water tap, and blender. An array of breakfast foods, and coffee and teas are included with your accommodations. A dining table and 4 chairs allow you to eat comfortably, and a beautiful bathroom of modest proportions with a glass block shower, plus large area for hanging and storing clothes complete your accommodations. A very efficient Monitor heater will keep your room at the temperature you prefer.
A wet/dry cedar sauna, free weights and bench, hot tub and deck, outdoor shower, comfy hammock, woods trail, fire circle, wireless DSL, and plenty of places to sit throughout the gardens complement your studio space.
A separate massage studio on the property offers massage and bodywork by prior appointment with an extremely talented local professional therapist, Paul, and he will help you to fully unwind and surrender into peace. Once you have a confirmed reservation you will have access to my website upon request, with contact information for massage appointments.
The gardens have played host to many garden tours, fund-raising events, and more than a dozen couples have been married in the gardens over the past 16 years. I bring my talents as an architect, landscaper, lover of Spirit, and as an innkeeper for 13 years at a retreat center in Sonoma County into play here, where I have finally found a place to live out my passion, and share it with others. My partner Alberto will see to it that your accommodations are beautifully prepared for your arrival.
We are fully licensed to operate a B&B, and our rates include an 11% hotel tax which we pay to the county, so staying with us helps to support our local economy here on the Mendocino Coast.
The Garden at Road's End is just 5 minutes from downtown with its restaurants and shops, and from the famous Glass Beach, Skunk Train, and from miles of spectacular coastline with its many beaches and hiking trails. We are a 20 minute drive along Highway One to the Victorian Village of Mendocino- a must see!
We look forward to playing unobtrusive host to those of you who feel inspired to visit and will do our best to make your stay a memorable one.
You will have access to all 8 acres of gardens meadows and forest, hot tub, sauna, free weights, hammock, free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast. You share nothing, it's all yours. Only one guest booking at a time on the property.
Interaction with Guests
I make an attempt to greet every guest to orient them to the features of the studio and property, to answer questions, make restaurant suggestions. After this 5-10 minute interaction, that may be the last guests see of me, except perhaps at a distance working in some part of the garden. I am around to respond to texts, questions, issues, but both my partner and I are extremely discreet and give our guests the sense of total privacy.
The neighborhood is a great location, just 5 minutes from downtown Fort Bragg, Glass Beach, and the coastal bluffs, yet the property is at the very end of a quiet road, and the only sounds you will hear are the garden's waterfalls, crows, wind in the redwoods, horses hooves and whinnies in the adjacent pasture, and when the conditions are right, the ocean surf. We are at the edge of the "banana belt": when Fort Bragg is socked in with summer fog, we are very often still in sunshine.
Parking is just steps from your studio, yet not in view from your windows. All you see are gardens.
Other Things to Note
Massage services are offered on site in a separate massage studio by a very talented local masseur by prior appointment. Combine this with sauna, hot tub (and hammock) for your own personal spa experience.
We ask that any accompanying children be supervised at all times around the pond and outdoor water features. No children under 14 in the hot tub or sauna please.
John was a wonderful host. He greeted us and showed us all the details of the beautiful studio he created. He even has fresh fruit, tea, coffee, and a few goodies in the fridge. The studio was beautiful and the views outside the windows, magnificent!!!! A hot tub to soak in gazing at the stars. Lovely walks through the gardens, complete peace. A great massage was available from Paul, right out your door. Our two day stay felt like a week of healing. I highly reccomend this magical place. Thank you John.
John's place is a true gem and it was such a pleasure to stay there. The gardens are absolutely amazing, tranquil and quite; the hot-tub and the sauna made it even more relaxing. The flat is very comfortable, great beds, fancy lights and a great surround-sound stereo. 'Garden Paradise' is definitely the right word for this!
This is a wonderful setting, very quiet and serene. John is a great host. The large apt was comfortable and cozy. I would definitely recommend John and his lovely apt.
My friends and I had an awesome experience. The one room guest house was perfect and felt comfortable even though it was only one room. nicely spaced. We did expect a stove top and oven but John was so accomodating by giving us a hot plate and I learned more about using a convection oven/toaster.Enough to cook blueberry muffins minus the muffin tin that did not fit. I can't speak enough about the gardens and how much we felt relaxed as we strolled through them. Great stars at night as we sat meditating in the spa.. John has a book about the history of his space and it was nice to know a little about the land he developed. The neighboring horses were friendly and came by to say hi. Over all, I would highly recommend this special place for anyone who needs to get away from it all.
My listing description clearly lists what the kitchenette offers. No oven or stove top is mentioned. I do not encourage cooking full meals as the kitchenette has no ventilating fan, is not permitted with the county as a full kitchen, and as a courtesy to the next guests, I don't want strong odors of lingering food to dampen the experience. I provided Karen with a hot plate and cooking utensils because she arrived with groceries and a pork loin that needed to be cooked, but as a general rule I encourage guests to make do with the microwave, tabletop convection oven/toaster, refrigerator, blender and coffee maker.
Fantastic Stay! The gardens are amazing. So relaxing. The hot tub and Sauna were clean and comfortable. Like staying at a spa and zen garden. We will be back. John was a great host and really easy to work with. Very on top of things. Great facilities in a prime location....with a 5 star feel!
Staying at the garden at road's end was an incredible experience, especially on a full moon. Having 8 acres to yourselves is like living in a fairytale. Soaking in the hot tub under the moonlight and roaming around the gardens and forest was incredible. John was super nice we felt very welcomed. The aesthetic of the lush garden environment and cozy interior of the accommodations showcases John's great taste and imagination. We will definitely need to come back soon.
Magical...again. I stand by my original review back in August of 2014 about this amazing place when I experienced it for the first time. This time, it was for a romantic getaway rather than a creative work space.
The serene nature and graceful beauty of this special place allows for the deepest of connections whether it be to yourself, your true love, or to (email hidden)rhaps all of the above! This Garden Paradise remains on my shortlist of epic places to experience. We'll be back. Thank you, John and Alberto, for creating and being the stewards of this lovely space you share.
What is first apparent is that I'm a passionate gardener. My training is as an architect, however, and I came to my passion later in life when I left the big city career behind and moved to a mountaintop in the mid-'80's to run a retreat center that catered to groups who were seeking answers to some of life's bigger or more elusive questions. When I left the mountain in 1998 I moved to Fort Bragg with the idea of creating something on a small scale where I could offer guests an intimate and personal sense of the healing power of nature. I've recently teamed up with AIberto who works tirelessly with me here and helps to manage the home and guest accommodations. I can't imagine anything I'd rather be doing than stewarding the gardens and property in this most beautiful part of the planet, and sharing them with others who appreciate the natural world.
