About this listing
We promise to do our best to provide an authentic ‘Irish’ welcome during your stay in our home, an old farmhouse that we have extended and renovated. We are always here during your stay, so are available to advise and offer recommendations of where to visit and where to eat. We can give you the ‘local’ insight to our beautiful neighbourhood. A peaceful night’s sleep is guaranteed, and if you opt to join us for dinner, it will be prepared with great homecooked organic food mostly grown here.
So many of our guests have arrived as strangers and left as friends.... we hope you will feel the same after your visit to our home. We look forward to welcoming you to our oasis in the Irish countryside.
Peace and quiet is guaranteed, away from hustle and bustle. This is the place to come to sit back, relax and watch the grass grow, or admire the beautiful night skies with no light pollution to spoil the view.
Our home is an old farmhouse which we have extended and renovated over our time here…. indeed, there is still lots of work to be done, particularly outside. We are based in the very North of County Tipperary in rural Ireland. Each room has a dual aspect looking out over green fields with grazing cattle or sheep. A warm welcome and a peaceful night’s sleep is guaranteed.
Your breakfast while you stay at Oldfarm will always consist of organic home produce - our own granola, fresh eggs from our hens, sausages and bacon - all of course, subject to availability. Homemade organic bread, scones, jams and chutneys are also included. Breakfast is served between 8 - 10 am, and is always prepared fresh and to order.
If you choose to stay with us you are within easy reach of so many of the wonderful attractions our country has to offer. There are the popular destinations - Birr Castle, Rock of Cashel, Kilkenny City, Galway City, Cliffs of Moher, Limerick City - all within an hour or two of our home. If you want to take a break from driving there are lots of hidden gems right here in the Midlands that are so worth checking out - Fancroft Mill and Gardens, Bellefield House, Lough Boora Parklands, Irish Workhouse Centre and Portumna Castle and Forest. Lough Derg, Ireland’s biggest lake is just minutes from us, and the pretty villages along its shoreline are worth exploring. Definitely enough to amuse and entertain for a couple of days…. have a look through our ‘guidebook’.
We are also blessed to have great golf clubs and horse-riding facilities in our area. Our neighbour, Bobby, is a gillie. Should your interests involve fishing or shooting, Bobby is your man. If hill walking is what you like to do, we are just 20 minutes drive from the Slieve Bloom Mountains which offer walks of many different grades.
We are as self-sufficient, and sustainable, as possible. We grow all of our own fruit and vegetables organically. We can produce dinner from ingredients we have grown here on our smallholding. Sometimes though we do have to subsidise it with food from other sources - but again we will shop from local organic producers.
As we are based in quite a rural area we offer the option of an evening meal, at an additional cost of €25.00 per person (2 courses - choose between a starter and main, or main and dessert). As we grow most of our own food you are guaranteed quality and deliciousness! Let us know if you would like to avail of this option. We are wine drinkers and offer a small selection of wine at cost price, or if you'd prefer to bring your own that's fine too!
We have quite a repertoire of dishes from traditional Irish/European fare to Indian dishes that we offer guests - Alfie’s (almost famous) pork burgers, Margaret’s sausage casseroles or her Pork Larb. We can also cater for vegetarians and Alfie does some pretty stunning vegetarian pizzas among other dishes.
If animals are your thing, you're in luck. We share our smallholding with a couple of dogs and a cat, hens, chickens, ducks, turkeys and rare breed Saddleback pigs and Zwartbles lambs. You're welcome to help out, and your safety is always our primary concern.
If you'd like to bring your dog along, please just ask us. We would ask that they are used to hens and ducks (our birds roam freely on the property) and also that they have up to date vaccinations - both for your dog's safety and ours.
We also run Pig-Rearing courses as part of our business here... perhaps you would like to learn all about pig-rearing? Do come and stay. You will find details of our courses on our business website : Oldfarm
Some points to note: Unfortunately there is no public transport, so your own transport is essential. There is lots of safe parking space on the property. This is an old house - the stairs are steep for anyone with mobility issues or those with young children.
About us: Former Dublin city dwellers, we came to North Tipperary almost fourteen years ago. We found this lovely rural community, who welcomed us with open arms. Our home needed a lot of work when we arrived (and indeed it's still a work in progress) but we've restored and refurbished over the years. We now run our free-range pork business from home, selling our delicious pork directly to the customer. (website hidden)
We love it, and we think you will too. You can read about our life (and see some of our recipes) via our blog ayearinredwood or if you're into free-range pigs, check out our website : Oldfarm
We look forward to welcoming you to our authentic Irish home.
Guests will have their own bedroom and exclusive use of one of the bathrooms. Breakfast is generally served in the dining room, while if you choose to join us for dinner in the evening, this is served in the family kitchen.
Interaction with guests
We are always here while guests are staying, and are available to offer advice on places to visit.
Our neighbourhood is a rural farming area. And, of course, you are most welcome to watch (or help) with pigs and lambs :)
There is no public bus service, a car is a necessity.
Other things to note
There is so much to do and see in the Midlands. Alfie is former Chairperson of Mid-Ireland Tourism... so we can point you in the direction lots of interesting things in the area.
If guests are staying for more than one night, we have a local mobile/cell phone available for keeping in contact with us.
We are open friendly relaxed people, who will do our utmost to make your stay an enjoyable and relaxed experience.
We are non-smokers, but welcome smokers to the house, provided they respect the house rule - and smoke outside on covered stoop, where you can sit back and enjoy the view of Knockshegowna and the Devil's Bit off in the distance.
If you'd like to bring your dog, this is permissible, provided it is used to hens and ducks who roam freely on the property and that your animal is fully up to date with vaccinations.
Cancel up to 7 days before your trip and get a 50% refund plus service fees back.

Ex soldier and commercial diver and along with my partner Margaret we are now raising rare breed pigs, on our small holding. We're both passionate about our environment and food.
Both are well travelled, and love company, cooking, and conversation. Our blog is ..
