Stay at our comfortable rural farmhouse in the heart of Ireland, close to the River Shannon. With beautiful views of North Tipperary and the Silvermines Hills, our home is located on the border of three counties, Tipperary, Offaly and Galway, and is an ideal base for exploring the Midlands and West. Alfie is Chairperson of Mid Ireland Tourism, so is available to recommend lots of interesting local destinations.
Galway city 60 mins, Limerick 50 mins, Dublin and Cork both 2 hours away and Athlone only 40 mins.
Many of the traditional 'must see' spots are within an hour to an hour an half from us, so can be easily combined into a day trip. Places like Kilkenny City and all it has to offer is just an hour and 15 minutes away. The Rock of Cashel is an hour and half, and the Cliffs of Moher are also an hour and a half away.
For walkers we are just 20 minutes drive from the Slieve Bloom Mountain Park, and 20 minutes from Portumna Forest Park and the Midlands way. Just 10 minutes drive from Lough Derg and the River Shannon, we provide a cosy warm refuge after a day's fishing/walking.
We are just 15 minutes drive from historical Birr Castle and Gardens, Portumna Castle and Portumna Workhouse. Clonmacnoise ancient monastic site is 30 minutes away.
Unfortunately there is very limited public transport, so your own transport is essential. There is lots of safe parking space on the property.
If animals are your thing, you're in luck. We share our smallholding with a couple of dogs and a cat, hens, chickens, ducks, turkeys and rarebreed pigs. You're welcome to help out, and your safety is always our primary concern.
If you'd like to bring your dog along, please just ask us. We would ask that they are used to hens and ducks (our birds roam freely on the property) and also that they have up to date vaccinations - both for your dog's safety and ours.
We are passionate about food, and we produce much of our own especially during the summer months.
Your breakfast while you stay here will always consist of home produce - fresh eggs from our hens, sausages and bacon (if available) from our own pigs. Homemade organic bread, scones, jams and chutneys are also included.
We have a double and a twin room (can be booked via this link - https://www.airbnb.ie/rooms/1518964) available at a rate of €35 per person per night which includes our delicious home grown breakfast cooked to order.
As we are based in quite a rural area we also offer the option of an evening meal, at an additional cost of €15.00 per person (2 courses - choose between a starter and main, or main and dessert). We grow most of our own food so you are guaranteed quality and deliciousness! Let us know if you would like to avail of this option. We are wine drinkers and offer a small selection of wine at cost price, or if you'd prefer to bring your own that's fine too!

About us: Former Dublin city dwellers, we came to North Tipperary eleven years ago. We found this lovely rural community, who welcomed us with open arms. Our home needed a lot of work when we arrived (and indeed it's still a work in progress) but we've restored and refurbished over the years. We now run our free-range pork business from home. Interaction with Guests
We are always here while guests are staying.
Our neighbourhood is a rural farming area.... if you'd like to see a dairy farm at work that can be arranged. And, of course, you are most welcome to watch (or help) with pigs :)
There is a very restricted public bus service, a car is a necessity.
Other Things to Note
There is so much to do and see in the Midlands. Alfie is Chairperson of Mid-Ireland Tourism... so we can point you in the direction lots of interesting things in the area.
We are open friendly relaxed people, who will do our utmost to make your stay an enjoyable and relaxed experience.
We are non-smokers, but welcome smokers to the house, provided they respect the house rule - and smoke outside on covered stoop, where you can sit back and enjoy the view of Knockshegowna and the Devil's Bit off in the distance.
If you'd like to bring your dog, this is permissible provided it is used to hens and ducks who roam freely on the property and that your animal is fully up to date with vaccinations.

Margaret and Alfie are fantastic hosts. We stayed for a weekend, to do a bit of cycling around the area, but ended up spending most of the time at the house because it was so cosy, and they were both so welcoming, that we didn’t want to leave! The house is full of character, and the room we stayed in extremely comfortable. Breakfast is outstanding - from Alfie’s home made organic breads, eggs from the chickens pecking around the lovely garden, honey from their own bees, and bacon and sausages produced from their own completely free range pigs, you will not get a better meal anywhere. I would also recommend having dinner, not only for the great food, but to enjoy the company of two extremely charming and friendly people, who are great conversationalists and who will go out of their way to make you feel at home. They are both great cooks and the emphasis is on food that is ethically and organically produced. I would definitely recommend for a short break in the country. And, while you’re there, make sure you bring home some of their pork/eggs/honey – they are far superior to anything you can buy in the shops!
Alfie and Margaret are amazing, hospitable people. They made me feel like family. The farm is beautiful, and the breakfast is out of this world. They're so down to earth and will have great, wholesome conservations with you over a glass (or two..) of wine. I love everything that they do and will absolutely visit again! Thank you for giving me an unforgettable experience.
This was my first AirBnb experience, and I suspect any others will pale in comparison. The location is easily accessible. The accommodations are excellent. The food is superb. The countryside is lovely. The farm is a special place. Really though, the company of Margaret and Alfie is what we enjoyed the most. This brilliant, funny, kind, and patient couple took such great care of us. We arrived as guests and left as friends.
My sister, dad, and I had an awesome time at Margaret and Alfie's farm! The food was great, our rooms were comfortable, and we loved playing with the animals. It's an authentic and beautiful Irish farm.
Imagine the warmest of welcomes; the best of hospitality; delicious, organic food; great conversation; charming accommodation; entertaining farm animals...that barely covers our wonderful stay at Margaret and Alfie's place!
