It was completely rebuilt after the Great Earthquake of 1755 with streets flanked by uniform, neoclassical buildings. This was Europe's first great example of neoclassical design and urban planning, and one of the finest European architectural achievements of the age (it is currently being considered to be listed as a World Heritage Site, pending much-needed renovation of many of the buildings).
The apartment is 80 square meters with three balconies, one bedroom suite, a comfortable mezzanine with two mattresses and an office with a sofa bed for two persons. The kitchen if fully equipped with a fridge, microwave oven, toaster and a Nespresso machine, as well as all you need if you feel like cooking. An extra bathroom. Wi-Fi are also available.
Carefully decorated with original art and carefully chosen objects. Classy. Very well furnished. This apartment has a particular solid character that will make you feel at home.
Note, that most of the buildings Pombalina architecture have no lift ... be prepared for stairs to the top floor of the building. However, the view on arrival will help you recover your breath ; )
This apartment is in a very quite street but EVERYTHING is within walking distance. Bairro Alto, Rossio, Praça da Figueira and Martim Moniz train and metro stations are 3 to 4 minutes away, also are buses and taxi stations.
Few blocks away you find amazing restaurants with local and international cuisine, and famous coffee shop. In the near vicinity: laundries, pharmacies, and stores of all kinds.
It remains an imposing district, with elegant squares, pedestrianized streets, cafes, and shops. Old tramcars, street performers, tiled Art Deco shopfronts, elaborately decorated pastry shops, and street vendors selling everything from flowers to souvenirs, all lend a special charm to the area.

Our host, Pedro, is extremely inviting. He obviously loves his city of Lisbon and wants you to enjoy it just the same. We were running late, and he was very gracious even though we kept him waiting. The apartment is huge. Though there is only one bedroom with a door, a group of six could stay here quite comfortably. The walk up to the apartment is tough, though we had fair warning from the listing. During our stay, it was a very hot stretch in Lisbon, and the lack of AC can make it a bit stuffy inside. However, the amount of windows and doors to let in fresh air helped some. It was also great to have a washing machine in the apartment to clean some of the clothes that we had been traveling with. The pictures on the listing are a fair representation of what you get. Also, the location is a perfect spot to base your stay in Lisbon.
Pedro was the perfect host, meeting us at his lovely apartment when we arrived and explaining everything we needed to enjoy our stay. He gave us recommendations of the best places to visit or eat, and offered plenty of helpful guidance for the city of Lisbon. He even texted us more suggestions!
Yes, the apartment is up five flights of stairs but - as others have said before - that isn't a problem if you take small suitcases. Plus it had the advantage of giving you great views of the city, and raises you above street noise from this downtown property.
The House of Maps is a perfect place to stay, close to the Metro and trams, with lots of great restaurants and sights nearby. Lisbon is surprisingly cheap to visit [even the taxis are inexpensive], possibly one of the least costly cities in Europe at the moment.
All in all, our week at the House of Maps was a great experience and one we'd be happy to visit again.
Over all the apartment is excellent, and Pedro is great, really helpful and nice. The location is very central, close to the train/metro station and the main street. The apartment is clean and tidy. We were 4, each one got a bed, it wasn't crowded. The only "bad" thing i has to say is about the apartment floor- fifth floor, very narrow stairway. you should take it in consider if you have heavy luggage or little children. B U T The apartment and the location worth it! definitely highly recommended.
We stayed in this lovely apartment over a weekend and absolutely loved it! Pedro is a very helpful and genuine host. The place is clean, beautiful and within walking distance from pubs and restaurants! I can warmly recommend for you to stay here!
What a great place. The setting is great, the flat lovely and the location couldn't be better. Pedro was a great host, not too intrusive but with the right info if you needed it. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return soon!
