The Space

We have a self contained flat (downstairs apartment in our house) in beautiful Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island.

You'll have your own toilet and shower and a well set-up kitchenette equipped with a fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle and a couple of hotplates. There's also a stainless steel electric frypan. You'll also have your own TV and we'll provide tea and coffee makings.

There's a ceiling fan and a pedestal fan in case you need it on warm days. And we recently put in an air conditioner that can be used as well.

There's a private entrance to your flat, and we'll give you a key to your door. So it really is like your own place.

We have a washing machine and a clothes line that you are welcome to use.

The flat is a bit 70s in style...we must get that disco ball to finish it off!

We have lived on the Island for more than 20 years* so can give excellent advice on the best places to go and where to see a koala.

Please make contact with us by telling us a bit about yourself/selves before booking the space.

(*We've lived in our present house since late 2012, you might notice that we are doing minor repairs and renovations to the house and as such sometimes the yard can look a bit messy!)

Interaction with Guests

We've travelled extensively using Airbnb - so we know what travellers are looking for - a good clean secure space with hosts that are friendly and helpful while not being obtrusive.

The Neighborhood

We are a 3 minute walk to glorious Picnic Bay Beach - a really nice swimming beach. In summer the local council puts up a stinger-free enclosure.

The bus stop is on the way to the beach. The bus will take you all over the Island including, Nelly Bay, Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay.

The Picnic Bay Pub is just near the bus-stop and the beach (less than 5mins walk down the hill). The Pub is quite often a music venue on the weekends. There's the RnR restaurant which serves better than your average pub food and is open just about everyday for lunch and dinner.

There's also Alby's Chinese restaurant and The Picnic Bay Seafood Cafe (great for having take away fish 'n' chips at sunset on the beach).

There's the fascinating Magnetic Island History and Craft Centre plus a beautiful 9 hole golf course - all about a 5 minute walk away.

The Picnic Bay jetty is an Island landmark and is beaut for an evening stroll or maybe to wet a fishing line. It's less than 5 minutes walk away too.

If dance parties are more your thing, X-Base is about a 15-20 minute walk, with spectacular headland views along the way. If you are coming home late at night be sure to take a torch for the bush track. X-Base hold the famous full-moon parties each month.

There are some lovely walks you can take that begin close-by including Sails Rock, Rocky Bay, Cockle Bay and West Point. You can also visit the Ranger's Office to learn about the Island's National Park which covers 70% of the land mass.

Getting Around

We live less than a 5 minute stroll to the bus stop. Sunbuses run pretty regularly and will take you to all the populated bays. There's usually a timetable in the flat. Tickets are inexpensive and to find out more go to the Sunbus Townsville website.

Cars, bicycles and scooters can all be hired on the Island.

The ferry and barge terminal is in Nelly Bay. Buses meet almost every ferry. The walk from Picnic Bay to the heart of Nelly Bay is about 35 minutes. It's a picturesque walk best done in the morning or late in the arvo.

Other Things to Note

Picnic Bay is a great swimming bay. We often swim twice a day in the summer - in the morning and late afternoon or evening. If you are lucky to be here when there's a full moon, it's just amazing to watch the moon rise while floating in the water!

While we are happy to share our wi-fi system for email, checking social networking sites and general web surfing we don't have the capacity to allow downloading of movies, live streaming TV and using facetime. Sorry about that!

You are free to use the air conditioner but please turn it off when you go out.
