Villa Aalaya (Sanskrit for 'Home") is a beautiful villa made up of three antique teak buildings. The Joglo is our daytime space; containing the kitchen, dining room and sitting area, this building is completely open to the beautiful view of the forest, gorge and rice fields. Group dinners are great on our 4m x 1.5m teak dining table!
The Limasan is our private space, containing three bedrooms, a TV area, our library and two upper floor loft spaces (office and sacred space) The giant timbers and 40 foot ceilings create a stunning space to relax in.
Finally, the Gladak is a separate, self contained bedroom, made entirely of teak with its own private outdoor bathroom and veranda, mini fridge and coffee/tea making facilities.
The master bedroom has a king sized bed on a tatami platform, with a TV, 2 closets, a sunken tub and separate shower.
The two bedrooms are spacious with two single beds in one, and a custom made double bed with a pull out single underneath if required. They share a bathroom which is all glass (including the roof!) with huge trees overhead, an outdoor shower and a giant two person jacuzzi tub.
The property has a curved infinity pool overlooking the ricefiled and gorge, a trampoline (built into the ground, with net around), a fire pit for camp fires, huge beautiful trees and a bamboo grove. There is lots of parking and it is located 100m off the village road down a private driveway, so there it is very quiet.
Villa Aalaya is located 1.4km from the main road of Ubud in the village of Kutuh Kaja. The Ubud Botanical Gardens is 500m further up our street, and the only gym in Ubud is 700m from our house.
This is a family home we finished in December 2011 and live in, and it was designed with children in mind. We only rent it out while we are on vacation.
It comes with a Villa Manager to help with any questions/concerns and is fully serviced.
A memorable holiday in a beautiful setting with a very well appointed home.
It was perfect for our family of 3 generations meeting up from Australia, NZ, Singapore and London. We overflowed to the 2 bedroom house next door which was equally good.
We spent a lot of time in and around the pool and my 3 year old granddaughter loved the swings.
All the staff were most kind and helpful. We ate in 3 nights out of 5, enjoying Ibu Made's culinary skills...loved the Pumpkin Pie.
This place is absolutely wonderful. The staff is fantastic and the food is great (Ibu Made's pumpkin pie is as good as advertised). The access to Ubud is great and Badra will take you anywhere. We've stayed in a lot of Airbnb houses and this one is up near the top. If you like hanging in a beautiful pool and eating well then stay here.
Steve was there to warmly greet us and run through the features of the house. The place was exactly like the photos ... Beautiful. We absolutely loved Luna the dog (security) and wanted to take her back to Australia. Place was a bit far from Main Street to walk but easy to navigate on bikes. Organic frog 50 metres away serves great food though. Infinity pool was sensational. All in all was a fantastic stay at an amazing house!
Steve House had two sides.
One feels like a very old antique furniture, the other one is like atmosphere that is not clean.
Breakfast was special, clean.
The bedrooms were clean. However, the sheet did not change every day. Towels are not enough.
Manager was very friendly. Every day we asked for safety. And kindly explained what we need.
There was a huge dining room like a photograph. Chairs made of steel could not sit long, but nice.
There are three and a separate bedroom guest house. We used only three bedrooms.
This is where the host is lived. Remember this.
Put things in his beloved children and his goods are everywhere, and our kids spent very familiar with those things.
The design of the pool was excellent, and had been planning for children. However, there were no mattresses on the sunbeds, we could not sit there.
We had dinner in the villa two days. Of course, he met, price is also amazing. Maid is hard for us
One more thing, mosquitoes in the garden will have to be careful. My young son was bitten dozens of mosquitoes in the garden room.
I would like to thank to the house manager here. She has been purchasing the drug directly when our baby is injured.
And gave advice.
Thanks for AJung!
Dear Steve and Renee
We can't thank you enough for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home, it was more than delightful and the photos although beautiful could never encapsulate what an oasis it is! Six days and evenings of heaven! A huge thank you to your amazing team of staff, Ajeng, Ibu Made and Ibe Kommet, they became part of our big, noisy family and couldn't do enough for us. Would have loved to have taken them home with us. You are blessed. When next in Bali you will be our first port of call. Kind regards Kate
Excellent ! Lovely house, we loved the open space and kitchen. The staff was great and the food prepared by the cook very tasty. Very well located also just outside of Ubud in the middle of the rice fields.
We chose this home-stay because it was well equipped for kids with a trampoline, swing & shallow pool. Though it would be preferable if the kids (and adults) like dogs & cats as it comes with a very friendly & loving dog & cat.
Made, the chef cooks wonderful meals and one of the best sambal matah we've had in bali. She very obligingly also taught us to cook some of her yummy dishes and shared with us the recipes too. She'll babysit too for a fee and is good with the kids and will cook them pasta lunches.
It is a lovely home-stay if you love the wilderness in Ubud and are not a city person because you'll be hearing roosters crowing throughout the night. So get earplugs ready if you are a light sleeper. It was the rainy the season when we were there, so I think the ants decided to move into the house. There were ants everywhere walking around and the moment some food is left out, they will come. Along with the ants, are lizards and geckos, so be prepared to step into some big gecko poop.
I guess you have to be prepared for the critters if you want to stay close to nature.
Our stay was during Galangan, so it felt a little chaotic as sometimes the staff were not available and pool was not cleaned. But without fail everyday someone came to tidy up the place and cook our breakfast.
There is a little massage bed in the attic so it was great taking turns getting a massage at "home" when it's raining outside every afternoon.
One of the afternoons the waterpump had some problems and we were not able to reach the house manager for some time and couldn't take a bath (the worst time for it to happen because we had just come back from our cycling tour and were hot and sweaty, so jumped into the pool instead) but luckily Made came by to babysit and helped us to call a plumber to get it fixed. Another time the village had no power, which meant we had no power & water too. But that can't be helped I guess, unless there was a back-up generator, which would come in pretty handy.
I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5.

We are from Canada, and have been working our way around the world... first with the UN and now in social enterprise.

Our style of hosting is simple: we set you up with everything you need in our "Welcome Pack' (local phone numbers, activities, restaurant suggestions) and hope you will enjoy the adventure of getting to know Bali on your own... which is sometimes smooth as silver.... and other times, a little rocky. Ubud is a magical place with lots of opportunity to eat, live and learn well. B
We especially welcome guests from exotic places and families with small children who like to play!
