The Space

Villa Aalaya (Sanskrit for 'Home") is a beautiful villa made up of three antique teak buildings. The Joglo is our daytime space; containing the kitchen, dining room and sitting area, this building is completely open to the beautiful view of the forest, gorge and rice fields. Group dinners are great on our 4m x 1.5m teak dining table!

The Limasan is our private space, containing three bedrooms, a TV area, our library and two upper floor loft spaces (office and sacred space) The giant timbers and 40 foot ceilings create a stunning space to relax in.

Finally, the Gladak is a separate, self contained bedroom, made entirely of teak with its own private outdoor bathroom and veranda, mini fridge and coffee/tea making facilities.

The master bedroom has a king sized bed on a tatami platform, with a TV, 2 closets, a sunken tub and separate shower.

The two bedrooms are spacious with two single beds in one, and a custom made double bed with a pull out single underneath if required. They share a bathroom which is all glass (including the roof!) with huge trees overhead, an outdoor shower and a giant two person jacuzzi tub.

The property has a curved infinity pool overlooking the ricefiled and gorge, a trampoline (built into the ground, with net around), a fire pit for camp fires, huge beautiful trees and a bamboo grove. There is lots of parking and it is located 100m off the village road down a private driveway, so there it is very quiet.

Villa Aalaya is located 1.4km from the main road of Ubud in the village of Kutuh Kaja. The Ubud Botanical Gardens is 500m further up our street, and the only gym in Ubud is 700m from our house.

This is a family home we finished in December 2011 and live in, and it was designed with children in mind. We only rent it out while we are on vacation.

It comes with a Villa Manager to help with any questions/concerns and is fully serviced.

  • There are a lot of nice houses in Bali but this one is very special. I think that what makes it so special is that it's a family's home. But it's not just an ordinary family. They are clearly very environmentally conscious and have chosen this amazing location to raise their children. We felt honoured to be able to "have their life" for 10 days.

As a family's home, it is fabulously set up for kids. It has an amazing infinity and kids pool, friendly dog, cat, trampoline, gigantic bamboo swingset, deep baths, spa bath and fire pit.

Another benefit of the home is that the staff are excellent, many having been with the family for over 5 years. Trisna (the family's PA and included in the daily rate) is an excellent communicator and arranges your day for you and made our stay run very smoothly. Made is such a fabulous cook that we ate all but 2 dinners at home! Made or another staff cooked a delicious breakfast each day (included in daily rate). Badra is a trustworthy and knowledgeable driver and Steve provided their family car for us to use (which has good air conditioning).

Not only is the house itself an amazing physical structure (twice as big as it appears in the photos) but the materials and woodwork are exquisite and it has an interesting collection of local and international art, treasures and books. It is has a beautiful aspect over a ravine and we saw lots of wildlife. It even has a massage room. Bedrooms were fully air conditioned and very comfortable. The layout was very practical for our needs.

The staff were very friendly with the children (eg Made invited us to her home to see her piglets and Badra would help with our 3 year old boy on walks). My kids loved them. So although the au pair we brought with us was completely useless, it didn't matter at all as there was so much for the kids to do at the house and we had all the help we needed!

On the last night the staff prepared a special dinner to celebrate 4 July (for my American husband). We roasted sausages and marshmallows at the fire pit. They even sourced some fire crackers for us. Made makes an amazing pumpkin pie.

I will hopefully come back next year for 2 weeks (minus the au pair). I understand that Made can babysit the kids!

    Celeste.

  • The other reviewers are right: This is an extraordinary home--three gracious, gorgeous antique Javanese houses set in a lush tropical garden with a stunning infinity pool overlooking a small waterfall and the rice fields beyond. Truly breath-taking. There are all kinds of luxurious amenities, from the fancy coffee maker and built-in trampoline to the Jacuzzi bathtub and the rain showers in the spectacular bathrooms. But they won't help you much if the power is out during most of your stay. Unfortunately, that's what happened to us. No fault of the host, I'm sure, but it was frustrating to have no light and little water for much of the three nights we were there. On the plus side, the cook, Made, is fabulous--we enjoyed two Balinese feasts prepared by her. And we enjoyed massages at the house, too. If it weren't for the power issues, this would have been one of our favorite holiday spots ever. Pity!

  • We're having great time staying at Steve's house. The house is wonderfull! I love evry detail he put in his house. We had so much funswimming in the pool and enjoying the great view this house has. The only turned down is the electricity that kept on got cut off, especially during our last night staying, but Steve said it's only happenned this time since it was raining a lot. Anyway, he is such a great host and he made himself available most of the time.

  • Our stay at Japan Tirta Tawar was absolutely fantastic. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

We thought the pictures looked nice but as soon as we arrived we were blown away. The bedrooms are smart and comfortable and the bathrooms luxurious. As it is a family home there were even toys for our children to play with. There's everthing you would expect at home such as coffee machine, TV, WIFI, DVD etc.

We loved the the infinity pool which overlooks rice paddies and a forest. We sat on the decking/balcony at night watching fire-flys dart around. The kids loved laying with the kitten and young dog - both of which are really friendly.

The house comes with staff who are friendly, helpful and unintrusive. It is too long a walk for young children to the center of Ubud but Badra (the driver and general house manager) is always on hand to drive you around at minimal cost (in the family's spacious 4x4). He knows all the best places to see and eat, as well as being able to explain all the related history. We had some brilliant days driving around the island with him, visiting the monkey forest, eating in a mountain restaurant overlooking a volcano, visiting a coffee plantation, rice paddies, temples and much more. We would have seen just a tiny fraction of Bali without him to guide us.

  • We had the most wonderful stay at Villa Alaya. The photos do no justice to the beauty, magic and tranquility of this home. We searched far and wide for a place that had such a homely feeling and could accommodate the group, and really felt lucky to be staying here.

As a group of seven, we found that there was ample space for us all to find a quiet spot to relax, or meet around the spectacular kitchen table. All four bedrooms are special in their own ways, and all of the bathrooms are incredible, especially as most of them are at least partly outdoors. We all love the outdoors, so this was an added bonus.

We thought that the house might be too far from Ubud but it turned out to be only a 25 minute walk from the main action, and a very easy scooter ride. It's also really quiet there, so the location is actually perfect.

All of the staff are incredibly friendly and very helpful. They really made us feel welcome and made everything feel easy. The breakfasts (which we didn't realise were included, what a bonus!) are awesome, so much better than anywhere else we've stayed.

Honestly I couldn't recommend this place more. We really had the best time and can't wait to come back!

  • Villa Alaya is a wonderful place to stay. I chose the villa after doing lots of research into accommodation around Ubud and I don't think you can get a better place in this price range especially with 3 bedrooms! The villa is made of two separate buildings, a day time living space (kitchen, eating area, living space, deck terrace all set near the pool with view of the jungle and paddy fields across the ravine) and a nightime space (living room, bedrooms, bathrooms). Both bathrooms are partly outdoors with wonderful baths and rain showers. There is a lot of space. The staff are wonderful, everyone is friendly, kind and helpful. We loved the breakfasts (the coffee machine brews up the most exquisite local freshly roasted coffee, and they use Royal Jelly to sweeten up their home-made granola) and we had dinner at the villa several times, very nice local food cooked by Made. The villa manager Badra can also double up (email hidden)/driver and he is extremely friendly and helpful and speaks good English. He was a real bonus. Don't hesitate to ask for his help and suggestions. We also went to see a show as Made the gardener doubles up as a dancer in a local village once a week. I warmly recommend Villa Alaya. Just a word of warning that it will suit people, who like us like to live outdoors and are not bothered by bugs etc. The space is very open to nature which was great as far as we are concerned but for someone with a phobia of spiders/bugs/ants etc it wouldn't work.

About
We are from Canada, and have been working our way around the world... first with the UN and now in social enterprise. We have two 'third culture kids' who attend the Green School because we believe in sustainability, global leadership and community. We love fresh food, fresh air and fresh perspectives; so there is nothing better than a dinner party with a healthy debate about ideas that can change the world. Our style of hosting is simple: we set you up with everything you need in our "Welcome Pack' (local phone numbers, activities, restaurant suggestions) and hope you will enjoy the adventure of getting to know Bali on your own... which is sometimes smooth as silver.... and other times, a little rocky. Ubud is a magical place with lots of opportunity to eat, live and learn well. But it helps to expect some Bali belly, an occasional power-outage and some road rash if you get too daring riding your motorcycle-- so that when they don't happen, you've enjoyed your trip even more! It's all part of the fun, and we are always here to help if you need it. We especially welcome guests from exotic places and families with small children who like to play. We only ask that you respect the privacy of our main residence. The guesthouse should have everything you need, and you can use the poolside whenever we are at school/work.
