Casa La Serena is an oasis, a place of quiet and lush beauty. It is open to the sea breeze and built in such a way that one can have both privacy and community. The bathrooms are beautifully made with unique features and the entire house is a showcase for the magnificence of Nicaraguan wood. Balconies open to the dazzling ocean view, a pool to watch the sunset from are some of the joys this house has to offer.

We spent 5 days at Casa La Serena, one of the smaller houses for my birthday and it was just magnificent! Wish we never had to leave!
Before we arrived, our host Laura helped make introductions to the local Dollar rent-a-car team who were extremely helpful. You absolutely need a car to stay here but we felt like it added to the fun of the adventure!
Upon arrival, we met our guide Nicole, at Remax in town, who took us shopping at the fish monger and the local market for fruit and veggies. She also gave us a tour of SJDS, highlighting must visit spots like El Gato Negro bookstore/cafe and Pan de Vida where we bought fantastic fresh bread.
Then we journeyed up the house. The roads are unpaved and pretty full-on but after a day, we got used to it. 25 or so minutes outside of SJDS, you reach the entrance of Balcones de Majagual and then the entrance to the house.
Casa de La Serena features a separate kitchen and living room building, a small private pool overlooking the trees and beach and a second building for the master bedroom. There is also a 3rd building with a smaller bedroom/office that would be perfect for traveling with another couple or friend.
Each bedroom features a ensuite bathroom and there's an outdoor shower and third toilet/sink near the pool. The walls of the living room can be pulled back to open it up completely tthe terrace and the sliding French doors throughout give access to separate little balconies. The main highlight is the gorgeous view that looks fantastic from sunrise to sunset and the sky afterdark.
Nearby, the beach at Pitahaya Baya was perfect. Secluded and fairly empty compared to Playa Maderas and the other beaches. Also spent an afternoon at nearby Morgan's Rock Eco-lodge which LauRa was so helpful in arranging for us! Such a lovely place.
Notes: Bring lots of books and plan to cook at home. The journey into town is tough and you won't want to leave this little paradise. The howler monkeys are loud and keep their own hours but that's part of the fun. Insect repellent is essential! I have a million and one mosquito bites from the weeks we spent in Nicaragua and found there were a ton at Balcones. If we could, would have loved to have a telescope!
It's gorgeous! Can't wait to get back!
Wow we had the best time here at Casa La Serena. My wife and I spent one month here for our honeymoon and had the most amazing time. The house is a really special place and definitely makes you feel like you are visiting the home of the animals of which there are a plenty.
It is a bit of a drive from San Juan Del Sur and you definitely need a 4x4 in the rainy season. If you are looking for somewhere to get away from everything, this is the place as it is amazingly peaceful with a beautiful view of the ocean and surrounding jungle.
There are quite a few insects around as it is in the middle of the jungle but that is part of the charm and the cleaning staff are very good at keeping the place clean.
There is a great kitchen and bbq for cooking and if you are looking to cook then you can buy groceries in town at the Pali (grocery store), Pan De Vida ( an amazing earth fired bakery in town) and buy your fish at the port which is all the way to the left when you face the ocean in San Juan Del Sur.
If you want to eat out, then you can call ahead to Morgans Rock, which is the fancy resort near Balcones- they accept reservations for dinner (though it helps to speak spanish) and the food is great and reasonably priced. Go there and catch the sunset before dinner. There is also a very simple local restuaraunt down the right near balcones, if you take a left out of the exit its on the left after about a 3 min drive.
The staff at Balcones are extremely helpful, though it really makes a difference if you speak spanish. If you have time take spanish lessons at the Latin American Spanish School in San Juan Del Sur- they are great.
We had the best time in Nicaragua and loved the people and the culture dearly. We are in Costa Rica now and missing Nicaragua alot.
Gioconda was an absolutely pleasure to deal with and was very helpful and the house is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely stay here if you can. We will be back as soon as we can for sure. !!

We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet. While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home Casa Selva- I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in Balcones de Majagual with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
