The bathrooms are beautifully made with unique features and the entire house is a showcase for the magnificence of Nicaraguan wood. Balconies open to the dazzling ocean view, a pool to watch the sunset from are some of the joys this house has to offer.

We stayed at Casa La Serena for our honeymoon in July; I was excited about this house for months and it completely exceeded our expectations! We actually can't stop thinking about it and I long to be laying by that pool eating fresh fish, drinking Tona (their local beer) and listening to the howler monkeys! I miss it greatly. As all other reviews mentioned, the private community is breathtakingly beautiful and the house was incredibly private. The guard at the bottom of the hill is available if you have any issues (we didn't, but we liked knowing he was there.) There is a dirt road down to a mostly private beach (I think we saw two couples there one day but that's it) and it's also walking distance along the beach to Playa Maderas where you can eat tacos and watch surfers before retreating back to your quiet, private cove. The house? Stunning. Everything you need is there, and the layout is well thought out. The open concept bedroom/bathroom was lovely and spacious. The views.....amazing. It's even better than the photos online I promise! As far as Laura/Joel and also the Remax property management team (Nicole and Gabby), they were each phenomenal in their own way. Weeks leading up to the trip Laura emailed us a few times to introduce us to the car rental people and then the property manager as well as answer questions. She was such a blessing and allowed me to not worry so much about details, since we were in the midst of also planning a wedding! THEN, when we arrived in San Juan Del Sur, we met Nicole and she took us to the fish market among a few other markets so we could load up (which you'll want to do since it's a 25 min drive to the house) before escorting us up to the house. She was also insanely helpful with answering our questions (she is American) and other tips, advise, recommendations on what to do, where to eat, etc. Seriously WAY more than we could have asked for. We couldn't believe it. Honestly this was the greatest place we've ever stayed and we are already planning our trip next year. GO! You will not regret it!
My wife and I had a very enjoyable time at Casa La Serena! Everyday was an experience and adventure. From bouncing up the rocky roads to get to the home, to relaxing at the beach just minutes away, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The setting was gorgeous and the place itself was everything as described. The tranquility and beauty of the surrounding areas were everything we could have imagined and so much more! We couldn't be more thankful to our hosts and all of the Balcones team for making our week such a pleasurable experience.
Casa La Serena is amazing! My wife and I went here for our honeymoon and had a blast! It has a great view of the beach and surrounded by the jungle. The house was in great condition and had everything we needed. It is an open concept house so you do get some critters coming in on occasion. The pool was great and cleaned daily. There were a few minor issues but the staff on site came to the house and took care of them promptly. You can see lots of nature around...monkeys, iguanas, birds, etc. The beach is a quick 4 min drive away. It is fairly remote with one house about 20 ft away that can be seen from the porche and is within earshot. The rest of the community is located behind the house, quite a distance away.
We had a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend it. The place was beautiful, we'll appointed, and the private pool was an awesome feature.
We ended up walking to the beach daily (a relatively easy 15 min down dirt road) which was also fantastic.
We found a few bugs, but it was actually less than expected.
As others have said, 4x4 is 100% necessary. Drive to town was easy enough.
Laura's place is absolutely amazing!! Very close to the beaches!
One of the best place I've been! This place is huge, clean, safe. Everything is very efficient and well thought. The master bedroom is literally gorgeous! The view from the pool is spectacular. The staff has been very nice with them.
We stayed 4 nights at Laura's it was absolutely fantastic, we had a blast.
Laura let us doing a late checking.
I strongly recommend casa la Serena!!
Upon arriving, we were walked through where to buy groceries, accompanied to the house, given info about the area, etc. Although sort of hard to get to in terms of road quality (definitely need a 4x4 vehicle), this place was exactly as it was advertised! No detail forgotten, super clean, relaxing, beautiful. 24 hour security guards made us feel very safe also. Loved our stay and can't wait to return. Couldn't have asked for a better experience! Thank you!!
We spent 5 days at Casa La Serena, one of the smaller houses for my birthday and it was just magnificent! Wish we never had to leave!
Before we arrived, our host Laura helped make introductions to the local Dollar rent-a-car team who were extremely helpful. You absolutely need a car to stay here but we felt like it added to the fun of the adventure!
Upon arrival, we met our guide Nicole, at Remax in town, who took us shopping at the fish monger and the local market for fruit and veggies. She also gave us a tour of SJDS, highlighting must visit spots like El Gato Negro bookstore/cafe and Pan de Vida where we bought fantastic fresh bread.
Then we journeyed up the house. The roads are unpaved and pretty full-on but after a day, we got used to it. 25 or so minutes outside of SJDS, you reach the entrance of Balcones de Majagual and then the entrance to the house.
Casa de La Serena features a separate kitchen and living room building, a small private pool overlooking the trees and beach and a second building for the master bedroom. There is also a 3rd building with a smaller bedroom/office that would be perfect for traveling with another couple or friend.
Each bedroom features a ensuite bathroom and there's an outdoor shower and third toilet/sink near the pool. The walls of the living room can be pulled back to open it up completely tthe terrace and the sliding French doors throughout give access to separate little balconies. The main highlight is the gorgeous view that looks fantastic from sunrise to sunset and the sky afterdark.
Nearby, the beach at Pitahaya Baya was perfect. Secluded and fairly empty compared to Playa Maderas and the other beaches. Also spent an afternoon at nearby Morgan's Rock Eco-lodge which LauRa was so helpful in arranging for us! Such a lovely place.
Notes: Bring lots of books and plan to cook at home. The journey into town is tough and you won't want to leave this little paradise. The howler monkeys are loud and keep their own hours but that's part of the fun. Insect repellent is essential! I have a million and one mosquito bites from the weeks we spent in Nicaragua and found there were a ton at Balcones. If we could, would have loved to have a telescope!
It's gorgeous! Can't wait to get back!

About the Host, Laura (And Joel)
We are just two travel loving people who fell in love with the country of Nicaragua and ended up buying our dream home! While we try and spend as much time there as possible, occasionally, we do have to work- and we do want to keep discovering this amazing planet. While we are doing this, we are happy to offer homes in our community to others to enjoy and discover this truly amazing country! San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is the place to come for travellers who are looking for surf, sunshine and a little adventure, and we try our best to make our home a little piece of luxury to come and relax in between all that fun! Through renting our own personal home Casa Selva- I fell into assisting my amazing neighbours in Balcones de Majagual with renting their homes- the rest they say is history. You couldn't pick a better spot in Nicaragua- and you couldn't pick better guests than myself and my husband Joel!
