The house is situated on the Point Reyes Peninsula with its famous National Seashore. Tomales Bay beaches are 5 to 10 minutes away, ocean beaches 15 to 20 minutes. There are miles and miles of hiking and biking trails for all levels of skill and energy. The house is a half mile off the main road, so it is very quiet, but still only 10 minutes away from a half dozen good restaurants, and fascinating shops including art galleries featuring local artists and photographers, a bookstore which sponsors frequent author appearances, several food stores specializing in artisan cheeses, organic produce, local fish, free-range grass-fed meats, and local wines, and shops selling spiritual artifacts, handmade gifts, kites, and DVD rentals. There are also bicycles and kayaks for rent nearby. The local weekly newspaper -- the Pulitzer prize-winning Point Reyes Light, available at many stores -- has a calender of the week's varied local cultural events: music, talks, plays, and festivals.
In the house you will find a welcome binder with guidelines for using the house, trail maps, and information about the area.
1. PEACE & QUIET. The house is on a quiet, dead-end street. Neighbors who live on the forested Inverness Ridge tend to value the peace and quiet of nature. So an important guideline for guests at the house is that your group not be too noisy. Neighbors enjoy the still of the night, the hooting of the owls, the rustling of the trees. Keeping good relations with them is crucial for me to be able to offer this house to guests. So I ask guests to not be rowdy, especially outdoors, especially at night. Normal social conversation and laughter is fine, of course. But if your group is apt to want to let loose and party, I ask you to choose another venue.
2. FIRE SAFETY. There is absolutely no smoking anywhere on the property, indoors or out. No fires are allowed anywhere except in the living room fireplace. Particularly during the dry season (late summer & fall) I ask guests to be super vigilant about fire safety.
3. DAMAGE, WEAR AND TEAR. Please treat the house gently, as if it were your own. Please let me know if anything has broken or isn't working. If it is normal wear and tear, of course I will take responsibility to right things. But if your group has caused damage beyond normal wear and tear, I'd appreciate your telling me about it, and taking financial responsibility for it when I get it fixed.
This was an absolutely beautiful home- so warm and hospitable. Everything seemed to be designed with care and intention and the whole place had welcoming vibes. A very stocked kitchen with all sorts of spices and great appliances. The hot tub was fabulous too!
This home is as peaceful and lovely as it looks. The kitchen and dining/living room space are perfect for unwinding in the company of loved ones. I had the perfect birthday getaway with friends, with beautiful walks through the neighborhood, as well as hikes in Tomales Bay State Park and Pt. Reyes. Gordon was a great host, answering my questions prior to arrival quickly and generously. I will definitely want to return to this house!
What a lovely home in a beautiful setting. Gordan has it down! The kitchen was well equipped for the yummy seafood choices at the local market in Point Reyes. Taking a shower while observing wild life out the floor to ceiling windows is a brilliant way to get reluctant children into the clean zone. Or adults for that matter. The cozy living space and high ceilings managed to keep one"snuggeley" and also inspire lofty thoughts. I did a bit of writing while there and I swear it is the next novel! Although the house is in a neighborhood, It seems like you are in the middle of the woods, quiet and serene, no road noise that I could detect. What else? Gordan was wonderful to communicate with and has detailed directions online and at the house to make the stay comfortable and it is clear how to trouble shoot should any problems arrive. He was available by phone for the only question I had and with a quick and helpful answer. My only heads up is the path to the (website hidden) not be wearing high heels, as I was (silly me) as it is a mix of wood and earth and a bit uneven. It is very manageable in tennis shoes and hiking boots, however.Much to enjoy in one of the most magical parts of the world! I would highly recommend this beauty of a place to land. Renee
Gordon was welcoming and accommodating. The house was as described, everything was set up, heat was on, etc.
The internet worked well. Hot tub was hot. Stove produced flame.
A few friends and I stayed in Gordon's lovely Inverness home last weekend, and it was absolutely perfect! The house was very clean, and everything we needed was right there. Hot tub, fire place, grill, fully equipped kitchen, games... what more could you ask for? I'd definitely stay here again!
All of the positive reviews I read were reinforced by my own experience. Unlike others, we didn't come as a small group, but as a group of 10. We came for a quiet reflective time as friends, and this home gave us that warmth and comfort. Gordon has everything laid out wonderfully, instructions were clear, we were completely happy. Some of the couples that came with us may be coming back by themselves :)
The house is a quick hour drive from SF and nestled in a beautiful location. The house/kitchen is fully stocked and had everything we could've needed. I would definitely recommend staying here.
I have loved the Point Reyes National Seashore for decades, and in 2007 finished building a place in the forest where friends and family can retreat from the stresses of civilization and be in nature, with hikes, beaches & bays to explore, and a hot tub to come back to. I enjoy sharing this home with people who appreciate nature and are seeking rejuvenation.
