Guest access
There is a gate to access our property and we will provide the instructions upon booking.

Guests can use the pool, garden, hot springs, BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, passion fruit, banana, soursop, guava and avocado.

Other things to note
The 20-acre retreat is nestled within the Puna Forest Reserve, enveloped by rainforest that is an integral part of the retreat's surroundings. On the property, steam vents have emerged from the 2018 eruption, releasing clean steam from boiling groundwater. Guests can enjoy a volcanic-heated hot spring on the premises, perfect for unwinding on the warm earth.

Hawaiian Natives possess the non-private land within the reserve to safeguard the sacred Native Ohia forest. The reserve serves as a habitat for the endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat, species that are rarely sighted elsewhere but frequently spotted at the retreat. Ongoing research aims to discover new species, with collaborative efforts in place to manage invasive species.

The Ohia Forest boasts towering ferns, a variety of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, geckos, praying mantises, and songbirds. The dense rainforest prompts us to advise guests to stick to designated trails or the retreat's grounds for safety, unless they are briefed on specific hazards. Surrounding the retreat are numerous skylights leading to lava tubes, lava trees, and caves. The Puna Rainforest offers a stimulating experience for the senses, inviting guests to see, taste, hear, and feel its natural wonders.

This property has a no-pet policy. Trained service animals are welcome and are not subject to a pet fee. Please note that service animals must be housebroken and under your control at all times. You are liable for any damages caused by the service animal.

Neighborhood highlights

There is little reason to leave a 10-mile radius but Hilo is only 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the new saddle road making the connection to the other side in about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions.
