Guests can use the BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, banana, soursop, guava and avocado.

The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives.
The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.
This property has a no-pet policy. Trained service animals are welcome and are not subject to a pet fee. Please note that service animals must be housebroken and under your control at all times. You are liable for any damages caused by the service animal.
