Wikipedia on "Hongdae area"
The area is a mecca of young art in Korea. It is common for Koreans to deem Hongdae as the center for art in South Korea.
Hongdae is known to be a home ground for many young artists because of its many infras; such as little theaters and venues. Hongdae is also known for its mural street. The street is located around the Sangsu Station(상수) and contains various murals and graffiti throughout.
The area is also home to hundreds of bars, restaurants, boutiques, and nightclubs and draws revelers from a wide range of backgrounds. Most bars are open throughout the night to allow patrons to return home by subway. There is also a large collection of independent coffee shops and cafes in the area that seek to attract the local young adult population. The area is also known as South Korea's capital for the underground rock music community, and live music is widely available around the bars and clubs.
- Every Saturday (except in winter) flea markets are held on a certain playground that is close to the university. It is a fledgling craft market of things made by students and recent graduates. It is known to be the ideal place to purchase low-priced art from up and coming artists in South Korea. Hand-made accessories, dresses, special cases for mobile phones, and even calligraphy artworks are all sold during these days.
- The last Friday of each month in Hongdae is "Club Day", a wristband-powered event which allows entry to more than a dozen clubs for the price of one.

Karen is really helpful and kind, she answered my inquiries quickly and do provide information in details. Her apartment is really cosy and convenient. I will be back if I am going to Seoul again.
The flat was clean and cosy but beware - it gets super noisy from around 10pm until 9am on the weekends and around 3am on school nights. I also found the flat to be quite cold at night.
The location is perfect! Less than 7 mins from the subway. Restaurants and bars literally at your doorstep and they are open till late at night. Perfect for party-goers and night owls. There are a lot of shops (cosmetic, clothes, accessories) within the vicinity. I highly recommend Irish pub lovers to go Shamrock & roll (located at 2F 407-1, seogyo-dong). It is a great hangout place (Guinness, darts and pool table) which is around 10-15 mins walk from the apartment.
Do not bother getting a data SIM card as Karen and Sid provides a portable wifi router to allow easy accessibility from anywhere in Seoul.
The apartment may not suit you though if you are very particular on hygiene (the place was slightly run down) or if you are seeking a peaceful or quiet retreat (music starts blasting in the morning).
This was a great place to stay in the vibrant Hongdae area. The communication was very good with this host. They got back to me last minute and when there was a small problem with the room it was resolved immediately. The free moving Internet was a huge plus and I really enjoyed my stay in this place. There is also a plethora of bars and restaurants in the area!
Lively, convenient and cozy - That's the best way to describe everything about this apartment. Words can't express our great experience in Seoul, and staying at Sid and Karen's apartment was like the cherry on top! Besides the Hongdae flat being surrounded by youth, awesome music and good food, and the Hongik University subway station a leisurely walk away, Sid and Karen made sure we were super comfortable and assisted us whenever we needed help.
Would love to stay at here again the next time I visit Seoul. Thank you, Sid and Karen, for your contribution to our wonderful trip! :)
Our stay at Sid and Karen's apartment was great! Karen was kind and accommodating via email and we found the place with just a little bit of searching. Excellent location for bars, clubs, restaurants, shops, artsy things, and a student atmosphere. It was noisy because the partying scene outside generally lasted until the early morning hours, but it actually never bothered us. The apartment itself was clean and had everything we needed. I would highly recommend staying here!
I had a great time in Hongdae and at the apartment. It couldn't be better located in the area. It's right in the middle of everything, the bars, restaurants, shops, and there are some "museums" in the same building.
The only downside, I have to say, is that the apartment isn't quite as clean and well maintained as the pictures lead you to believe. Also, the kitchen isn't very well equipped if you want to cook, and sometimes there were live concerts just outside of the apartment that went until about 4am.
But overall I had an amazing time and you can't beat this place for the cost and location. I would definitely come back!
I had a fantastic experience at this apartment, it is smack downtown Hongdae. If you like exploring the Hongdae nightlife than this is definitely the place to stay at. My only issue was that I couldn't figure out how to turn the water heater on so I was stuck with cold showers (which I didn't mind since the summer in Seoul was boiling hot).
Sid & Karen were super responsive when I had an issue and I would definitely love to stay here again.
Sid was a great host. He was accessible, patient, and responsive. For example, when I noticed a few missing things like the kitchen knife, he brought those things and more, knowing that I was staying for an entire month. (A microwave, toaster, rug, and extra towels for example.)
The apartment is in a fantastic area. I especially like it, because I like to work out of the countless cafes in HongDae. There are also several great Japanese restaurants in the area including three that are just steps away from the building. On the downside, The building and room itself is a bit older and can get a bit loud. Generally, it sounds like you're in a cafe with music playing in the background but can get fairly loud on Friday and Saturday nights. It's quietest in the morning and when it rains. (Closing the window and curtains does help a lot.)
The flat location is very good and very easy to get around. Only few minutes walk to the Hongik Univ station and other public transport. Sid & Karen were very helpful and very flexible as well. The noise can be a little issue but with ear plugs, there are nothing to worry.
