The Space

PLEASE make an inquiry before making a pending reservation. I prefer that you communicate with me first so that you have up to the minute info about my space and we make sure that it is a good fit for you and your plans.

I MUST have a profile picture of yourself and a filled out profile telling me a little bit more about yourself than just your name, otherwise I will not consider your reservation request. THANK YOU!!

Prefer two night bookings but will consider one night on a case by case basis. Two night minimum on holiday weekends.

Amazingly sophisticated, comfortable, clean and neat accommodations at the beach. You are literally at the ocean's edge. Breakfast included. Free parking, no extra cleaning fees.

TWO FREE Monterey Bay Aquarium guest passes. A huge savings of $39.95 per ticket.
Two new wave storm foam surfboards for your use.

If you are new to Airbnb please take the time to fill out your profile with some information about yourself other than your name, upload a photo and work on getting your verifications. I will need a cell phone number for you and your traveling companion. Phone numbers and website are given only after the reservation is accepted.

Tell me a little about yourself. I will also need to know the ages of everyone in your party and the purpose of your visit.
The more info you can supply, the easier it will be for me to approve your reservation request. I will not approve reservation requests until you have a profile, a picture and verification's. If you make an inquiry please let me know if you want to proceed or you have made other arrangements.

Please read the full description and rules before booking.
I have attempted to cover all the bases in this description of my unit, location and amenities.

You must be able to climb stairs...there is no working elevator in the building. I am the top unit of a two story building. Once again, this is a shared apt. Most of the time I am home and living in the apt. You have a private bedroom, and we share a full bathroom.

Fall asleep to the sounds of the waves, awake to the crisp ocean air and beautiful views of the central coast of California. Upscale neighborhood close to Capitola by the Sea.

Modern, funky, eclectic apartment overlooking the ocean and Capitola Village. Surf and beach decor mixed with 1950's furniture, art, photography, books and collectables. This is an average sized apt - certainly not "small" as referenced in one of the early reviews. If you want small, rent something in New York City!
My unit is probably close to 800-900 sq feet, not including the stairwell and roof area.

You will be staying in my guest room.- the first room to the left once you are in the apt. (I stay in the master bedroom).
Comfortable over-sized full size platform bed - with nice firm mattress and a novaform gel memory foam topper! Down comforter, fleece blankets, fresh cotton bedding and pillows. Bath and beach towels provided. Bathrobes too.
Flat-screen TV with built in DVD player in the guest room . Flat-screen TV with separate DVD player in the living room.
Wireless Internet and cable. Wireless code and info is on the small bulletin board on your bed.

If you have an additional person, or simply do not want to share a bed, I do have a new Costco Queen Airbed with headboard. Quite comfortable and better than sleeping on the floor. The cost of the second person using the airbed is $20.

If you are a couple and have a third person sharing the room and using the airbed it is an additional.$36 for third person.

Please let me know in advance if you need the airbed in addition to the regular full size bed in your room. The last few pictures show the airbed in the guest room. Additional guests are $36 a person...after the 2nd guest.

Guest room does not have a view of the ocean, however you can hear the waves. I do leave my bedroom door open during the day so that you can also enjoy the waves from my bedroom window. You can also see the beach from the dining room.

Compact functional kitchen with full size refrigerator, stove, toaster oven, microwave, crock pot, coffee, french press or Keurig, and Alessi espresso/moka stove top pot.
Plus a VitaMix blender!
It makes the best fruit smoothies. It is not a juicer.
You can get organic fresh juice at New Leaf Market in Capitola on 41st.

I prefer no full blown cooking as my stove/oven does not have proper venting. I use the toaster oven for small meals...and I use the 2 right burners for making eggs, tea, etc.

I supply breakfast food for you and often I am available to cook breakfast. Recent guests have been treated to hearty omelets with free range eggs and fresh organic veggies, buckwheat or banana pancakes or eggs benedict. There is always breakfast food available for you...such as whole wheat english muffins, eggs, yogurt, and granola or oatmeal. I usually have Gayles muffins or my own gluten free banana bread.

I also have a basket of gluten free options.
Kashi & organic raisin bran cereal, peanut or almond butter(kept in frig), juice, coffee, tea, etc. Goody Basket with snacks such as popcorn, raisins, nuts, trail mix, chocolate.

You are also welcome to bring your special food items and store them in the frig. I have soft sided coolers for your beach picnic. They are stored on the top of the shelving unit near the roof door.

Please let me know if you have any food allergies,(nuts), or are on a special carbs, vegan, gluten free, etc. I will try to accommodate your requests.
Dining table faces out to the ocean/beach and Capitola Village.

My apartment only has one full bathroom and it is shared.
Obviously I wish I had another bathroom but there are just some things in life you can't change so you learn to compromise gracefully. I do not work a regular job so I won't be hogging the bathroom in the morning! You get first dibs! Usually it is just me staying at the no wait for the loo.

The shared hall bathroom has a skylight, wall heater, hairdryer, flat iron, 10X lighted makeup mirror, shampoo, soap, body wash and other bath products. After sun lotion and aloe gel in the guest room.

Flexible check in/checkout may be possible on specified dates.
General check in is after 3 pm.
Checkout by 12 noon.

I do have some leeway and haven't put into place a strict schedule. I often have work commitments in the afternoons so your check in could be mid to late afternoon depending on my day. I will make sure you have a parking permit so that you can explore the area/beach if you arrive early in the day.
I will do my best to work with your plans.
Checkout should be by 11am-12 noon , unless we have made other arrangements.

If I am not traveling myself or at my other Monterey, CA location I will be sharing the apt with you. I sleep in the master bedroom. Sometimes my partner, Jim, or a good friend(usually chef tom) will be staying with me. Sometimes a friend will be acting as my co-host and staying in my room in the event that I am on vacation. We are very quiet and respectful of your time here.
We will have to share the one hall bathroom as well - so far this has not caused any problems with me or my guests.

Reminder...this is not a sterile, overpriced hotel room.
This is a SHARED, affordable lodging experience at the beach!!

If you are not comfortable staying with strangers, then this is not the ideal situation for your needs. Capitola has lots of lodging options, from the colorful and pricy Venetians right on the beach, The Inn at Depot Hill B&B, Monarch Inn in Depot Hill, to the new Marriott Fairfield Inn or the Best Western Capitola. If you need complete privacy I am sure that you will find the perfect space for your getaway, if you do your research.

I have recently received requests from guests with young children. My space is really not suitable for small children/toddlers. It is definitely not a kid friendly space. Young, well behaved teens are OK with a supervising adult in tow.
It is designed mainly as an adults only apartment.
I have many valuable pieces of art and and antiques all over the apartment, and it is on the top floor of the building.
It is not kid safe!

No pets please. I just had the whole apt cleaned. Nice fresh carpets.
Occasionally my dog comes to visit. Please let me know if you have any issues with dogs.

I have a leather box, near the bookcases, in the living room with local and state maps plus binders with restaurant menus and local activities.

Spring and Fall weekends on the central coast can be lovely with sunshine and mild temperatures. Perfect for biking, hiking and relaxing. Surfing too of course.

Winter can see a bit of rain here on the central coast, and chilly nights however we still have fabulous clear, crisp sunny winter days.

Summer is warm, with a touch of occasional fog.
Nights are almost always chilly after the sun goes down.
Dress in layers and you should be fine. A light coat, some fleece and a little cap/hat make the tempereatures more comfortable.
Capitola is the most mellow beach in the county.
Great for beginning attitude here!

Rates are $88 -122 US -depending on the season and holidays. Use of airbed is $20 additional. per visit. Third person is $36 a night.

Your stay includes breakfast and snacks.

Just park your car (free parking) and walk to everything...the beach, shops, restaurants, wine bars, English Ales Pub, Paradise Beach Grill, coffee shops, friendly dive bars like The Fog Bank (bands, karaoke, sports on TV) and Bay Bar (pool tables), Zeldas has big screen TV for sports watching,Thai food, Geisha Sushi (sustainable fish) & Tea House, fish tacos or tasty & always fresh delicious burritos made with love at Taqueria Baja. You can indulge your craving for the famous Mariannes ice cream, Starz cupcakes, Pizza My Heart, and more. Mr Toots is a cool coffee place with a great view of the ocean.

You can also walk to the upscale, romantic Shadowbrook Restaurant -. Enjoy a full meal or cocktails in the lounge. For brunch I would send you to the Wharf House restaurant on the Capitola Pier. Great homemade food and I hear the eggs Benedict is the bomb....or head to Paradise Beach grille.

Wine Tyme bar is one of my favorite hangouts. Say hi to owners Sondi & Ed. In fact I am now officially part of the Wine Tyme family!

Cava wine bar is also quite nice, next to Caruso's Italian restaurant. The other really nice Italian place is run by a Sicilian chef - called Bella Roma Cafe.

Great shopping in Capitola Village for gals and guys....lots of fun stores from funky to upscale.
I love Zen Island - beach decor and clothing. You can't resist!
Lots of great shops and merchants in the Village and the Mercantile Mall.
You can find shades, shoes, lingerie, beach glass, surf gear, local art and more!
Explore, window shop and take home a bargain or a treasure.

There is a pool in my complex and it is heated by solar panels or you can take a dip in the ocean. There are a few nice adult hot tub places nearby in Santa Cruz... Kiva, Well Within and Tea House spa.

Please message me if you have any questions or concerns.
I take calls from 9 am - 9 pm Pacific Standard time.

Full address, directions, email and phone numbers are sent via airbnb once your reservation is made and confirmed.

If you make an inquiry about my place I will respond promptly. PLEASE give me the favor of your response back to me and let me know if you need more information. I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you want to book it or not so that I do not hold the space.
My space books up quickly.
Your phone number and email will not show up until you actually book the reservation. We must communicate within the airbnb system. thank you.

Guest Access

I have some surfing gear, including two 8ft - 244 cm- foam wave storm surfboards ( holds up to 250 pounds), a boogie board, a skim board, and wetsuits that I will loan out for the adventurous types.
The two white longboards on the right of the blue foam boards are my personal boards and are not to be used by guests.

Below my building, on the beach, they offer surfing lessons and have gear to rent. They also offer SUP - Stand Up Paddle. You can surf below the building or up the road at Pleasure Point, The Hook, Sewers, etc....or drive to the west side of Santa Cruz to Steamer Lane or Cowells Beach by the Boardwalk.

Interaction with Guests

I thoroughly enjoy interacting with my guests, if time permits, and I am equally happy to give them their space, as needed. I am very flexible and will adapt to your needs and desires...within reason!

I am pretty quiet, a light social drinker, and I do not smoke cigarettes. I am easy going and happy to engage in conversation and perhaps a splash of wine or a cocktail with you. If you prefer your solitude I am happy to oblige and give you lots of space.

The Neighborhood

There is so much to do on the central coast of California. - surfing, sailing, stand up paddle, kayaking, biking, running, wine and beer tasting, whale watching, Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, art galleries, wildlife viewing, photography, redwoods zip line tour and so much more. I love this area and would be happy to assist you with recommendations and such.

We are centrally located on the Monterey Bay on the central coast of California. Coming in from San Francisco area it takes about 1 1/2 hrs...sometimes less depending on traffic.
You will be heading south from San Fransisco on highway 101 or 280 headed to Hwy 85 and going through the Santa Cruz mountains- hwy 17 - until you drop down to sea level in Santa Cruz. Then you are on Hwy 1.
You can also take highway 1 south along the coast from the San Francisco area. It's a lovely ride.

For reference purposes we are approximately 5-6 hours north of the greater Los Angeles, CA. This depends on which route you take. The coast route along highway 1 will be more time consuming than highway 101 or highway 5.

Once you are settled in at my apartment, you will be mere seconds from the beach in Capitola or a short drive or walk to the other spectacular beaches in the area.

You are 5-10 minutes drive to the 10,000 acre Nisene Marks State Park for miles of hiking or dirt biking in the Redwoods and along the Aptos creek. There is also a wonderful Buddhist center, Land of the Medicine Buddha, where you can walk and hike. There is a lovely self-guided loop, less than a mile.

It is only 10-15 minutes to downtown Santa Cruz, shopping along Pacific Ave and the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Old School Wooden Roller Coaster. There is a zip line tour of the redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains.
Heading up the coast it is about 20-30 minutes north to Davenport, and 45 minutes or so to Half Moon Bay.
There is wonderful biking and hiking in Wilder Ranch, about 20 minutes away.

If you wish to visit Monterey area it is approximately 45-50 minutes south on Highway 1 to Monterey, Carmel,Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach.
Monterey has excellent attractions such as Cannery Row, a wharf and the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.

I can arrange FREE guest passes to the Aquarium for you during your visit.
This will save you:
Adult $39.95
Child $24.95 (Ages 3-12, under 3 free)
Student $34.95 (Ages 13-17 or college ID)
Senior $34.95 (Ages 65+)

  • Thank you for a great stay. All is as it was purported to be. Wendy was warm and hospitable and her "Chef" makes an amazing breakfast . . .

    Thank you.

  • My sister and I had THE BEST VACATION EVER which began with happy greetings from Wendy at 1 AM. Her special "bit of Heaven" condo is in THE PERFECT LOCATION, in THE IDEAL CITY, in A GORGEOUS AREA OF OUR COUNTRY. Artsy Wendy was always smiles, and her warmth added to our days of pure contentment. Wendy's generosity, advice, yummy food, and relaxed demeanor made each day begin and end beautifully.
The/her beach beneath the condo, watching the surfers, enjoying the ukulele players on Sunday morning, Big Sur's NEPENTHE, Carmel's FROM SCRATCH, the Monterey Aquarium's jellies and anemones, GAYLE'S yummies, and the Land of Medicine Buddha Retreat walk were favorites this trip. WOW! WOW! WOW!

  • Wendy is charming and disarming as an airBnb host. From the time we arrived until the time we left, she made every effort to make us comfortable in her fascinating little art-filled apartment overlooking the Pacific. She clearly enjoys hosting and was well prepared with fresh towels, the extra bed (an air mattress) we needed, and the gluten free snacks, tea, and fresh fruit in the morning. And OMG! Her banana bread is awesome! The neighborhood is terrific, too. Thanks to Wendy’s recommendations, we climbed down the 80 or so concrete steps to the seaside town of Capitola-by-the-Sea and had some wonderful meals in town. Walking back the long way at night, we marveled at the stars - they were brilliant and the area isn't overly lit up. She knows all about the nearby attractions and gave us some great ideas about what to do. I really enjoyed talking with her. This listing is a lovely, laid-back way to visit the Santa Cruz/Capitola area and to experience it as if you were staying with a friend.

  • We had a wonderful stay with Wendy even though it was only for one night. The accomodations were great, the location was awesome and Wendy was great in letting us borrow the Aquarium passes and using the parking permit. Overall, we had a great time!

    March 2014
  • My favorite AirBnb experience to date! Super comfy bed, clean environment, friendly Wendy and to DIE for breakfast prepared by her private "chef" as we looked down over the town of Capitola, the ocean and bluffs and the approaching storm. And then my friend and I spent the day at the Monterey Bay Aquarium 45 minutes down Hwy 1, courtesy of two guest passes provided. MARVELOUS!

  • Had a fantastic time at Wendy's this weekend. The room was very cozy and the apartment overall is welcoming and clean. We had an amazing breakfast cooked by Wendy's friend Chef Tom, and then went to Monterey Bay Aquarium with the passes they generously lent. Wendy is very friendly and equipped us with maps and useful recommendations for exploring the area. Would definitely return!

  • Couldn't have asked for a better host or room. Wendy was very communicative, helpful and went above and beyond to make my boyfriend and me feel welcome. Including a tour of the entire place, coffee and tea and even made breakfast the next day. The space is inviting and the room is large. Would love to stay with Wendy again!

  • Wendy's place has become our home away from home, and actually I think she treats us better. She goes out of her way(literally) to make your stay a memorable one, and we have had two memorable stays. I wish I could give her more than the 5-star rating/ She is that good a host!!!!!!

    Response from Wendy:

I was so surprised to receive your gift. I love the laughing Buddha. thank you so much for your kindness.

  • My friend and I really liked the apartment, the bed was cozy, and the location couldn't be beat. Wendy was out of town and made sure everything went smoothly for us as we were just there alone. Everything was clean and comfortable. Really cool place. I would stay again. Highly recommend.

  • We had a great time! Wendy was so nice and accommodating and very easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay there again!
