Great balance of nearby conveniences and natural beauty.
Detailed, all-season New England house, with wrap-around porch, near Berkshire summer festivals, and local ski resorts.
5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms in a 2-story colonial style house, which originally served as the schoolhouse for the town. Kitchen is recently renovated with cathedral ceiling and exposed beams. It's a pleasure to work in and to keep the cooks company.
BBQ on the premises, and epic meals on the porch, deck, or mill. Playground and sleigh hill across the street. Many local walks, including the Appalachian trail. Lakes, waterfalls, and our own flume will cool you off and keep the adventure going. Charming general stores in all the adjacent towns. Good bicycle destinations for kids as well as competitive cyclists.
Triangulate the high arts in Dance, Theatre, and Music. Stroll the streets of our nearest town, Great Barrington-ranked #1 in best small towns in America by Smithsonian magazine. Stockbridge, Lenox, Lee, Millerton, and Salisbury all a quick jaunt.
Foodie and Localvore oasis with many farmstands, markets, and farm tours.
No, my tuxedo cat, Marsci, is not included! Unless, of course you wish to take him on holiday. More than likely the air has been ionized, each surface dusted many times over since his last visit. But I understand if your cat-allergy friends make it a no go.
Typically, you and I will coordinate in the days following your visit as to how you will access the keys.
By Friday, our housekeeper, Teresa, is making her last rounds. And with this in mind, please appreciate that you are certainly welcome to arrive at any hour on Friday, but that you are likely to be sharing the space with her if you check in before noon.
We are literally across from a playground, baseball diamond, and sled hill. Two bumps away to the postcard-worthy general store.
You may be inclined to pass us up for a listing with wifi. If it is that important to you, first reach out to your other interests and ask them if it is satellite service (most typically through direct tv). Otherwise, I recommend listings that are in the bigger towns; they can be very attractive and some will have cable or DSL.
We found that fixed orbit satellite has marginal value, and that a visit to a quaint hotspot listed in my regional guide will be far more productive. Practically speaking, satellite is roughly the speed of dial-up or cellular mi-fi, will cut out without transition in stormy weather, and it works on quotas which are not proportional to streaming or downloaded video content, for example, and may even cap off while you play hot potato with that report you wished to get off your mind.
Better yet, label everything nicely for your colleagues, put up your email auto-reply for a couple days, and otherwise stick it to em!
We had an absolutely perfect time at James's home in the Berkshires. The house really is beautiful - adorned with lovely antiques and perched above a babbling stream. There was more than enough room for the 10 of us (which was a pleasant surprise!). The cooks out there will be very happy with the kitchen. We cooked up a feast and enjoyed it in the beautiful dining room. We would have been happy to just stay in the house the whole time, but alas, we had come to ski. So we ventured to Butternut at James's recommendation. It was a blast! Scenic views of the rest of the Berkshires and a nice range of slopes and trails. It was a fantastic day. We very much appreciated the guide book James put together and all of his suggestions for our visit. He was the perfect host. We cannot wait to return (really, all 10 of us want to go back!). The trip couldn't have been better, really! We loved it. Thank you so much James!
A very comfortable and easy-to-live house, with plenty of space for people to cook, eat, rest and enjoy the quiet surroundings. A playground is located just in front of the house, which makes it nice for families with young children. A highly recommended location for anyone wanting to enjoy the region ! We were in the midst of a snowy weekend, and all worked well, from the heating system to the snow removal of the driveway !
Staying at this house was a real pleasure. It was comfortable, furnished well and very interestingly, and there was more than enough room for our extended family of five to spread out, or hang out together. Good kitchen too.
What a great house! We were in town for a wedding at Gedney Farm, which is just up the road, and the house more than accommodated us and our friends. Warm, welcoming and inviting. Thanks so much and we'll be sure to come again!
I just returned from a fantastic weekend at James' Down by the Old Mill Stream. We were 7 women who come together yearly to chat, rest, pray and enjoy each others company for 3 glorious days. We are so happy to have found airbnb and ultimately this terrific space. Everything was just as James said it would be. We found the abundance of kitchen supplies (of all variety's) to be quite decedent and a treat. The sitting spaces around the inside and outside on the property we particularly nice for quiet sharing, reading or just contemplating. Be sure to give this space a shot.
The house is amazing! NO WIFI or cell service make sure you have all directions before you get there.
we spent a lovely weekend here - two families (two couples, five kids). the house has a history one feels, and it's clear both the owner and the guests respected that history.
instructions and suggestions were provided ahead of time, in great detail. everything worked (heating, excellent showers) just fine.
the outdoors is amazing - the river just a few yards away. we spent a morning sitting in the beautiful space provided, overlooking the river.
no wifi at the house (one is available two minutes away by car), which made everything lovelier still.
We had a wonderful time this weekend. The house is perfect for a group of friends. The screened in porch is great for night time hanging out and the lounge chairs by the stream are idyllic. James is very friendly and responsive. We will definitely stay here again!
We had a fantastic stay at Old Mill Stream.
James is responsive and accommodating, and the house is an absolute joy to stay in. We loved the wrap around porch and the fantastic kitchen and dining room.
this is a wonderful house. the wrap around porch is just delightful, kitchen is spacious and clean as are the bathrooms. all the bed rooms are airy and light, the mattrices are nice and firm.
we were here for a wedding in the area, but the house is so pleasant that we all wished we had been able to stay longer! bravo!
