A little cottage in Chuckanut Village, nestled creek side with a wide view of the bay. A huge garden to explore and graze from, cozy greenhouse, chicken tree house for the hens, kayaks to paddle into the bay, private hot tub, large fire pit, and BBQ.
This is a very classy little cottage in Chuckanut Village, nestled literally creek side. This dynamic hangout beacons you to kick up your feet in the eclectic garden with curvy raised beds and a chicken tree house. We also have a gorgeous little greenhouse built from mostly up-cycled materials. Come collect your own eggs and graze from the garden, and stay a while. Hot tub and >5 kayaks available.
The cottage echos the designer main house, connected by boardwalk and lovely private garden. Hostess is a horticulturalist who loves to share creative thoughts. Watch the tides change, and smell the salt air, pick some greens for your salad from the garden and treat your palate to some fresh flavors.
This retreat is ideal for one or two guests, as there is just one queen-size bed. Children are welcome as well, but please note that this space is small-- we call it the Hobbit House for a reason!-- and it is not child-proofed.
The Hobbit House has a nice little galley (kitchen) inside with a mini fridge, two-burner hot plate, and toaster/convection oven. The kitchen is stocked with fresh eggs from our chickens, coffee & tea with all the fixings, a few other breakfast goodies, and cooking essentials (spices, olive oil, etc.) all included in the price of your visit!
We appreciate if you eat red meat to BBQ it outside in the outdoor kitchen area adjacent to the Hobbit House. This small cedar building also houses the shower, which has a limited hot water tank. Please note that showers must be kept short! We provide environmentally friendly shower products for you to use, as the water drains into the garden.
The space feels very beachy/nautical. Please note that we have a composting toilet. We have a high sensitivity to this marine environment and our mutual stewardship of this special retreat.
Hot tub, outdoor shower and large BBQ area, garden and grassy lounge space, kayaks, and a huge fire pit and seating area if you like a serious bonfire.
Interaction with Guests
As little as they wish. Once we get people well settled we are just available as needed. Hostess and family (including a cat, German Shepard puppy, and chickens) live on site in the main house and share the BBQ/outdoor kitchen space. We are also present in the large garden space, coming and going to the green house, feeding the chickens, and playing with the dog!
Incredible little historic village setting. Old and young, a blend of very friendly, mellow dog lovers.
We are right off the famous Chuckanut Drive, very close to trails, public boat launch, hiking, great mountain biking right here on Chuckanut, Larrabee State Park on the bay, and 1.5 miles from Historic Fairhaven for shopping and dining. Transport to the Alaska Ferry and AmTrak just moments up the road. Airport shuttle to Bellingham International Airport available. The Bolt Bus arrives in North Bellingham at one of the WTA public transport hubs. Public bus comes as near as Fairhaven.
Other Things to Note
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of a composting toilet, please don't book. It is clean and sanitary. Not a big deal.
•Please be aware that this is a shared space in a neighborhood, and sound is amplified by the bay.
•If using the hot tub or fire pit after 10pm, please be mindful of the volume of your voice.
•When parking your car, please pull straight in and leave room for another car to park next to you.
•The water from the outdoor sink by the grill drains into a bucket under the sink. Please use as little soap as possible in this sink, as the bucket is emptied into the garden.
•Hot water in the shower is very limited. You will need to keep your shower under 7 minutes, and allow time for water to heat between showers.
•Please use the environmentally friendly, biodegradable shower products we have provided, as the water from the shower drains into the garden. If you have other products you need to use, you may use the shower in the main house at our convenience.
•If you need to use the shower in the main house, please do so between 9am and 9pm, unless otherwise arranged.
•Please cook any meat on the grill outside, as it tends to leave an odor in the Hobbit House that may be offensive to the next guests.
•Check out is at noon.
This place is fantastic! The creek out one window, the bay out another and the hot tub on the deck just outside - wow! It was sweet to watch the weather do its thing, rain and shine. Hobbit House has a truly special surrounding. The inside is also magic. The cute little kitchen has everything you need tucked into every little nook and cranny. We also enjoyed preparing food and taking out into the greenhouse to eat. Alison was a terrific host. We'll be back!
Thanks Paul! Now I have completely been overhauling the greenhouse and planted so many more veggies ! Future Hobbits can look forward to a veggie- packed season. It's going to be tough to keep the little bistro table and chairs open for hanging out in the greenhouse much longer but as it warms we'll move seating to the garden area . I love this time of year! Thanks for coming! Alison
We had a great time at the Hobbit House. The area is very quiet, the house is clean and exactly as described. Very peaceful visit, amazing view. Allison was very nice and we were provided everything we needed in order to have a pleasant stay.
Thank you Viviane for the nice review. I am glad that you had QUIET and peace and playfulness during your stay! We had a huge garden party after you left and the place now looks fantastic! Lou built a bench in front of the BBQ house and opened up the view some more, and the hammock is up for the season! See you sometime again we hope...!
Alison and her hobbit home are extraordinary!! It's like a little dream, perfectly decorated and filled with everything you need, great use of the space. The hot tub was amazing during the chilly evening and we enjoyed our dinner on the porch watching the sunset. This is a place we will definitely return, it's magical! We had a good chance to chat with Alison and she is super warm and hospitable. The chickens were delightful and we had amazing fresh eggs in the morning. What an amazing place, thank you Alison...you'll see us again!!!
The Hobbit House was the perfect little house for a dreamy get away! Beautiful setting...the stream runs right outside the bedroom and kitchen windows. So peaceful. Alison was an amazing host and she has a beautiful property. She was quick to answer my questions by phone and email and was available throughout the weekend for anything I needed. Darling little house. Can't wait to stay there again!
Thanks Patty! I love your enthusiasm and zest ! Your lovely review is appreciated and welcome. We had a huge garden party here last night and a band of Roving Gardeners came in and helped me weed and plant and mulch. The place looks like I want it to now! It's a lovely spring, so come back anytime! All the best~ Alison
Staying at the Hobbit House was a magical experience. Alison was a kind, thoughtful and attentive host and we had everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. We enjoyed the artistic and well-designed layout of the cabin including a very comfortable bed! In the mornings we enjoyed scrambled eggs from the Hobbit House hens and drinking our second cup of coffee in the greenhouse. We also enjoyed a sunset soak in the hot tub after a slightly rainy hike up to the Oyster Dome. We hope to come back again in the warmer weather to take advantage of the Adirondack chairs overlooking the bay and the kayaks. It was a pleasure meeting Alison and staying at the Hobbit House!
An incredible little spot: easy to find, right off the Interurban trail (for you runners), everything you need for a comfortable stay. We happened to catch a windy/rainy weekend; it was great seeing it ravage the creek and bay through the windows of our warm Hobbit House. The included coffee with french press, fresh eggs, local Rosemary english muffins and half & half were generous and delicious additions! Alison and her daughter are warm and caring hosts who have put loads of thought and effort into making this a relaxing respite.
This was the perfect getaway and Alison was an amazing host. She accommodated our requests and her daughter left us a sweet note upon our arrival. The area was picturesque and when we weren't relaxing in the hot tub looking out at the bay, we were scrambling on the rocks and playing on the beach at low tide. The space was perfect for 2, the composting toilet was a breeze, and the shower/bbq/outdoor kitchen was perfect. We will definitely be back, wonderful. Just wonderful.
Thanks so much for the nice review! I am so glad that the composting toilet was not a "deal breaker." It's pretty cool. I do, on occassion have people that seem to be concerned that it might be stinky or something so it is really nice when folks chime up about the ease of using it. Thanks so much! Bring back your sweet pup when you return! All the best~ Alison
Alison was born and raised in in the Puget Sound Basin. (Seattle area) and has lived on or near the water her whole life. I love the water, and everything associated with it. I am very interested in biodiversity and environmental issues, and work full time educating on these topics. After running a wholesale greenhouse operation for many years, she applies these skills of natural pest control, biological approaches to farming and growing, to clients around the country, She sells beneficial insects and compost tea brewing equipment and related items. The gardens are her sanctuary, and she works from home so is available at times for additional requests or access to information about hikes and things in the area.
