About This Listing
This centrally located, private, furnished, single bedroom apartment is in the heart of Gjirokastër's old pazar, directly across from the historic mosque and within easy walking distance of the castle, ethnographic museum, historic houses and neighborhoods. The bedroom has twin beds. A couch in the living room also folds out into an extra bed. The kitchen is new, and I'll provide directions to the local butcher and daily fish and produce market so you can stock up on fresh local produce. The apartment has 24 hour hot water, AC, TV, and washing machine.
Gjiroakstër is an hour and a half from the nearest beaches (with daily buses for 300 leke) and 2.5 hours from the world renown, UNESCO protected Butrint Archeological Site. It is 30 minutes from the Greek border.
This was an excellent apartment to stay in the old town of Gjirokastra. The location is perfect. It's worth staying a bit longer and exploring all the areas of the old town. The people are really friendly and there is a grocery store just next door and a coffee shop on the ground floor. You can be self sufficient with the kitchen and also washing machine. The food in Gjirokastra is delicious - even suitable for vegetarians. I had a wonderful time there and definitely recommend it. It's also a very safe place for women travellers and the apartment is next to the bazaar so it's easy getting around. If you have any questions, Chris is really helpful and gave me advice on travelling from Tirana, met me when I arrived in old town and answered all my questions about Albania.
Beautiful and big apartment righ in the centre of old town. Also clean and confortable And with a great view! Chris gave us a lot of usefull information about how finding the apartment, where to eat and so on. The owners Lee Lee and Tina were very very kind and help us with information. They know a little of italian also! reccomended!
We didn't stay at Chris' place because there were some other people who didn't leave the place because they didn't respect our prior reservation.
Fortunately Chris found us a nice replacement - a huge apartment with very nice view - so no big deal with the place change.
Chris appeared to be a caring host, he walked towards us when we were lost in the city, guided us get the apartment, acted as a translator with the Albanian host and also provided some interesting stories about the Gjirokaster and Albania.
The house was really in the centre of the old town, in a few minutes you can reach all the most important touristic places. Lili was very friendly. The house was clean and comfortable... we really enjoyed our holiday!
As one of the world heritages of Unesco, Gjirokaster is almost a worth to see place. The town is full of history and historical buildings, and at same time, it is a really living place with very friendly citizens. Since two years we think that the Albanian culinary is one of the bests, but not discovered in Europe. Gjirokaster with the many good restaurants is a very good starting point to enjoy the real natural and rural dishes.
The flat itself has a very good location, in the center of the old town. From there anybody can reach upwards and downwards on the hills of the town on the foot the most important monuments. Free parking places for the cars are every time to find near from the flat, and there are really safe.
The flat is very clean, full equipped, and for a shorter time, it's full enough for four people. It is inside of a building with bureaus and some private flats: so it is a real Albanian experience. It is really quite enough, we were there with two children, and haven't any problems. The wireless Internet connection was every time fluid.
The owner of the flat are very kindly people. They don't speak English, but with a few words in Italian it is not a problem. However, Chris was every time available and very helpfully, and answered our questions immediately. We can just suggest to visit Gjirokaster, and stay in that flat.
The apartment is right across from the mosque, so super easy to get around. It's clean and comfortable, though there is no wifi and the Ethernet cable that was supposed to have internet didn't work. Other than that it has everything you need, including sofas to relax on and a kitchen. Chris wasn't there because he was out of town -- he is not the owner but is managing the communication for the owner, who is a nice guy but speaks no English -- so I can't speak to his advice on travel etc. All in all it's a nice comfortable place, especially good if you have several people, or an extended stay where you'll really take advantage of being in an apartment instead of a hotel room.
About the Host, Chris
I'm a former US Peace Corps volunteer in Gjirokaster, Albania who decided to settle down and continue working here in the town where I served. I believe thoughtful private enterprise is the best way to strengthen local communities, and I think Airbnb has a role to play in improving the local economy here and helping people get to know this town. Traveling, gardening, biking, hiking, drawing, and smoking Hookah are some of my hobbies. If you need help getting around in Albania, I know the country well, I've been living and traveling here since 2008 and speak the language.
