About this listing
39 STEPS FROM THE SEA
A family owned house exclusively used for rental. It can be rented alone or in combination with our property listed under “139 steps from the sea” which is very close to it. Built during the 60’s it has been recently refurbished but it still maintains its simple character. This house is a real retreat on the second biggest, yet undiscovered, greek island of Evia. It is 150 km from Athens( by car + ferry boat) or 210 km (by car, crossing the Chalkis bridge) .It is situated on the slope of a small hill, it is surrounded by almond, fig and olive trees and has a wonderful view from its 40 sq.m. balcony. It is 50 meters away from the sea. There are no discos, restaurants or coffee shops around, the beach is sandy and very quiet. It is 13 km away from Aidipsos, a famous spa city known from antiquity. During your stay, you can visit the Thermae Sylla Spa ((website hidden) ) considered by Conde Nast Traveller England as one of the top Medical Spas in the World and try different types of treatments. The village Gialtra, where you can find most of the basic shops , is on the top of the hill, within walking distance (10 to 15 minutes).
The house itself is 70 sq.m., it is furnished with taste but has no particular amenities. It is the ideal place for people who want to live in simplicity for some time and enjoy nature, hiking (the place is surrounded by forests), swimming (the sea is very safe, as it is a small gulf) or surfing. Since we have decided to opt for an alternative way of life during our vacations, there is no television, but there is internet connection for you to stay -if you choose to do so- in contact with civilisation.. A car is necessary! The house is composed of a living room with view to the gulf, a small equipped kitchen , a bathroom with a shower and a bedroom with two beds. The living room has a fire place, a pull -out sofa bed plus one bed. There are screens at all the windows and a ventilator in the bedroom.
There is also a shady back porch where you can take your breakfast.
Communication languages: English, French, Italian, Greek
** If you are planning to spent some time in Athens, you can visit our listings on airbnb "Take a walk on the Acroplis side" and "Stylish apartment- Heart of Athens"
Special attention should be given to the use of fire, since the house is surrounded by trees. Guests should refrain from throwing paper in the toilet basin.
This place is wonderful and we lived at the same rythms as the people of the island. Sunrise on the bay is unforgettable ! Neighbors are friendly and we had the opportunity to learn some words of greek. If you enjoy clear water, organic product and ecology it's the place to visit. We will be back soon ! Ralou is a perfect host, always present to help you. Thank you so much.
We had the most amazing time with our 2.5 year old and 5 month old. The house is gorgeous and the sea is as calm as a lake, which makes it perfect for toddlers. Perfect for families who want to escape busy urban lives!
We loved the old stone building with the marvelous view of the bay and the fishermen's village. It was a treat just to sit there and enjoy the secnery.
The building and it's surrrounding, including the beach, are extraordinarlity safe for children. Ours, 3.5 years old, ran wild and completely free.
The facility is minimal, exactly as described, and yet the owner gave us the feeling that we were in good hands for every possible need.
The sandy beach, all to ourselves, was a great attraction for us, as people who seek peace and quiet. The old village and it's habitants were most hospitable and charming to visit (and the bakery is outstanding!).
We highly recommend Ralou's "39 Steps" as a refuge for any couple or small family who is interested in a simple, natural vacation.
Ralou's place on lovely Evia is a great location for a relaxing holiday. When you are looking for a quiet place, near a lovely, sandy beach and very helpful and nice hosts, this is the place for your next holiday in Greece.
The sandy beach is just a 2 minute walk away and it is not filled up with people. You cann take lovely walks in the surrounding forrests or simmply relax at the beach.
Ralou also offers some great suggestions for restaurants or activities nearby.
As a small welcome present we found great local, organic food in the refrigerator and Ellie (Ralou's daughter) showed us the place and could always answer our questions.
All in all a freat place for a holiday!
Thanks a lot Ralou!
We had a wonderful time in this quiet and very authentic place. Far from the usual foreign tourist spots. The house has a wonderful veranda with views of the bay and is only 300 meters from the sandy beach which is never crowded . Ralou is a very warm and polyglot host with a lot of advices and addresses at hand to help organise your stay and find the right tavernas.
If you want to experiment a real greek meal delivered at home you must contact Nadia, a neighbor, who is a great local Chef (professeur de français dans la vraie vie...).
After 8 days in this little paradise it is hard to go back to normal life.
Great place and memorable experience. Very nice place for weekends or longer summer vacations. The house is cosy and the view breathtaking. You can spend hours in the terrace enjoying the calm an beauty of the location.
