Situated in an idyllic hamlet in the Northern Lake District, on the slopes of England's third highest mountain, the apartment sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms. Keswick is 1.5 miles away.
The apartment is on two floors: both bedrooms have views over the mature gardens and their own TV, radio and hairdryer. Downstairs, there is a spacious lounge, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, gas hob and electric oven) and a small toilet room. The apartment has its own private entrance and private parking spaces. You are also welcome to use our wifi.
The apartment is situated within a Victorian Lakeland Country House, set in over two acres of mature gardens, with its own putting course, which provides entertainment for young and old. There are also resident red squirrels and Philip the Pheasant, who enjoy their daily meal of nuts and seed!
In terms of location, we are based in Applethwaite, a small village which is five minutes by car from Keswick, or a 25 minute walk down a beautiful country lane (with magnificent views). It is also very conveniently situated for getting to all areas of the Lake District - e.g. Buttermere is 25 minutes, Grasmere is 20 minutes, Penrith is 20 minutes, and Windermere is 45 minutes away (by car).
Keswick has a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants, a cinema and The Theatre by the Lake. It also has lots of shops, including numerous walking shops, should you need to get kitted up. There is also a small bistro less than 5 minutes by foot up the lane.
As the apartment is on the slopes of Skiddaw, the elevated position of the house offers magnificent views over Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale and many famous peaks such as Catbells. Once there it feels as though you're a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We live onsite and will be there to welcome you and share our local knowledge with you, to help you make the most of your stay here - be that local cafes, art galleries, walking routes, local beer etc! We can help with bike storage and drying facilities if needed.
Many people like to visit this area for a week or more, and we would be happy to discuss a weekly rate. Whilst we've set the minimum stay as 3 nights, if bookings allow we would be happy to consider one or two nights - if this interests you, please get in touch and we'd be happy to discuss.
We absolutely love the corner of the world in which we live, and look forward to welcoming you!
What a trip! The sheer size of the house, the decor, the location, the garden, it was all magnificent, and genuinely made the trip an amazing experience. The location is excellent, we were able to take long walks to and around Keswick and enjoy some lovely scenery.
The hospitality was fantastic, we were provided us with everything we need in order to explore and take a leap into an adventure.
Would definitely recommend to anyone!
This is a fantastic base for a walking holiday in the Lake District. The apartment is part of a grand old home so it has a sense space and grandeur from days gone by - but with all the mod cons. Not your average town apartment! Tom and Gail were delightful. All in all, a perfect AirB&B experience!
We had a wonderful time in Keswick at the Mallory apartment. The accommodations exceeded our expectations. We were so pleased with everything from the location, the comfortable living areas, the sense of history and probably most of all the hospitality of our host , Thomas. He was very helpful with assisting us with local sightseeing, restaurant suggestions and most of all made us feel at home. We can't wait to go back!!
We loved everything about our stay here! We came in September for six nights and we were sad to leave. The location is superb, and our spacious apartment (Mallory) had everything we needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Our hosts, Tom and Gail, made us feel very welcome from the very first e-mail for the booking, all the way through our stay.
We especially liked the history of the property and the overall feel of the house and its surroundings. The house and the views are beautiful. We were interested in hiking (or 'fellwalking' as they say), and Gail recommended some very nice destinations and routes, providing all the maps and information we needed. I am determined to visit again, and will plan my next visit to the Lake District around the availability of this apartment.
My parents and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay. The apartment was very spacious, very well equipped and maintained. I would recommend this to anyone staying in the lakes.
Great place for self contained stay - kitchen had everything you would need, plus everything to entertain if wet outside - lots of games & mini golf too. Enjoyed our morning visits from the red squirrel & pheasant. Our host host had left us in the very capable hands of her neighbour, Rosemary, who assisted with expert knowledge of the area & even took care to move our washing to ensure it dried in the sun.
A great ambience with its setting of a large country house & picturesque views over the lake.
We loved our stay at Applethwaite. The house is straight out of an Agatha Christie novel. It is luxurious and very well equipped. The location about a mile from Keswick meant we avoided the worst of the summer crowds. Nestling under Skiddaw, the grounds are lovely and were the setting for some epic games of mini golf. Our host Gael was really helpful and informative.
This apartment is truly lovely. The high ceilings, grand staircase and antique furnishing make this a unique and delightful rental. It looks like a set for a Merchant & Ivory film. The house was spotless. Our children enjoyed the mini-golf course and we loved watching the wild pheasants stroll across the lawn. There are excellent hikes right from the door. Gail was friendly and helpful.
We stayed in the Mallory. It is a lot more spacious than we expected. As we were looking for a spacious place, we were very happy with our choice. We have a whole living rooming and kitchen on the ground floor, and two en-suite rooms in the first floor. For a family of four with two young children, it feels very spacious and comfortable. The Victorian country house staircase is wide, gradual and grand. We love walking up and down on it. We look at the well-kept lawn and red squirrels every morning as we have breakfast at the dining table. We would not hesitate to recommend it or stay there again. The only small critique is that we can see spiders and spiderwebs in various places of the house. A spring cleaning should get rid of this problem easily.
What a fantastic stay with everything we needed/wanted and more!! Beautiful rooms, stunning finishes and majestic grounds. The location was great too, just up the road from town and such an extensive variety of activities to do. A big thank you to Gail and Tom for a warm welcome (with tea, coffee and cake!!) and fabulous hospitality. We look forward to visiting again soon.
