Neighborhood highlights

New York has the Upper East Side. Chicago has its Gold Coast. Boston has its lower-rise Back Bay.

And in Philadelphia, we have Rittenhouse Square.

William Penn’s southwest public square has been shorthand for the pinnacle of class and elegance since the mid-19th century, when the city’s elite began building grand houses on the streets west of Broad.

As a Rittenhouse resident for your stay, you'll enjoy access to a wealth of arts, culture and intellectual stimulation, as we're wedged between the Avenue of the Arts and the universities across the Schuylkill. Not much further away lie the museums that line the Ben Franklin Parkway. Plus some of the Cities best restaurants are just a stone throw away, from dive bars with superb cuisine at Good Dog to fine dining at Vetri.

The home is also easy walking distance to University City, a stroll to Old Town, and the riverfront is a short car ride away. We suggest a 25 minute walk across town to the world famous Barnes Museum.

Welcome to Rittenhouse Square! We are proud to present a bit of Philadelphia History at 1822 Pine. Our 8000 sq ft home was built in the early 1800s and still has much of its original charm, including a grand Parlor that would have hosted many Philadelphia high society events. Early owners of the property included John Rozet, son of Jacob Rozet who helped launch America's first manned balloon flight in 1793, and Mary Anne Lanning, Daughter of renowned Adjunct General John Lanning. It may have been at one of these society events that their daughter, Emily Roset, met her future husband, Anthony Drexel. If that name sounds familiar, it should, the Drexel's went on to found Drexel University just 10 blocks up the road from 1822 Pine. That was after Anthony founded Drexel Morgan with his protege J P Morgan. ...Today you'd know Anthony's bank as J P Morgan Chase, one of the largest banks in the world. As you enjoy 1822 Pine, consider the nearly 200 years the house has been hosting people from all over the world. We hope you will enjoy your stay!
