17th Floor Urban Living: Pearl Dist

Apartment - Entire home/apt · SW 13th Ave, Portland, OR 97209, United States

The Space

Bigger than a hotel suite and cheaper than one too, our two bedroom, two bath home is located in the heart of the Portland urban core, rising seventeen floors up from the sidewalk. Bamboo floors, granite kitchen with modern appliances, balcony and floor to ceiling windows overlook NW Portland and Forest Park. Rooftop common area, an exercise room and tenant theater on the mezzanine completes the picture.

We're fortunate to live in one of Portland's most innovative buildings where wind turbines on top of the building generate enough electricity to power the elevators and a carpet of plants and succulents soak up the Portland rain, reducing runoff that clog our waterways.

Our location is literally in the heart of all that makes Portland. Step out the front door and to your right is The Pearl, to your left, PGE Park and the Portland Rose Garden. You can easily walk to the heart of downtown, Art Museum, the Farmer's Market, the Park Blocks, PSU, Powell's Books, Stumptown Coffee with easy access to light rail and Portland Streetcar. And music! Music is everywhere...including on our great sound system in our apartment.

No need to rent a car. ZipCar, GetAround and Car2Go are right here either in the building or a couple of blocks away. Rent bikes a block away at West End Bikes -our neighborhood bike shop. Portland has over 126 miles of bike lanes running through main portland roads. Access to toured bike rides is a snap or maybe Women on Bikes, a women's-only series of fabulous clinics and fun rides is more your style. Either way, Eric and I can recommend some great rides, as outside of walking, bikes are our main transportation.

Many restaurants surround the area. From Indian to Japanese to award-winning pizza to Northwest Fusion, you'll find excellent food within a 4-5 block radius. Two blocks away you'll find one of the densest areas of the famous Portland food carts, a tradition echoed all over the city. Whether you grab a Tito's Burritos, a Big Bowl or try out the Ethiopian cart, you'll have access to a slice of Portland everyone cherishes.

One of our favorite things to do is head across the street to Al's Den and listen to live music. Our little spot is named after Al Winter, Portland's gambling overlord who, in the 1940s, managed his vast empire that spanned the Pacific Northwest and into Las Vegas from this very location. Although I've yet to see a poker table, the live music, artist residencies, pre- and post-concert performances are well worth crossing the street for.

Eric and I also love to walk to Forest Park. In 1803, William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) paddled far enough up the Willamette River to see Forest Park's present location. He described this forest as having Douglas fir as its predominant tree, with trunks ranging from five to eight feet in diameter. Forest Park now includes over 5,100 wooded acres making it the largest, forested natural area within city limits in the United States. Yep...all from our place. Plus our views overlook the park's 4,200 acres. So pretty!

Finally, not to put a damper on things, but there is NO SMOKING ANYWHERE in the building. That includes up on the rooftop, out on the balcony and most certainly in our place. Offenders get evicted - so please, if smoking might be an issue, take it to the streets.

Our home is beautiful and gives you access to the best ways to experience Portland! Let us know when you'd like to stay. If you see times blocked out, reach out and ask...we're pretty flexible.

We also have a large, Portland-style home in Mt. Tabor / Hawthorne area. Great for families, weddings and holidays. Ask us about availability.

  • Ruby and Eric's place was perfect for our stay during the weekend of the Portland marathon. Everything is right out the front door, and they were excellent hosts, having left us easy to understand directions. I would highly recommend this place.

  • oh man, where i do even begin? ruby and eric are AWESOME. ruby and eric's place is AWESOME. everything about our portland experience was AWESOME. booking the place was easy-breezy, and, when we contacted them about dropping our luggage off a couple hours before check-in, they not only accommodated our needs but also arranged to pick us up from the train station. crazy nice, right? eric, who is super friendly, recommended a great spot for lunch, provided helpful instructions for accessing their condo, and then took care of our luggage and texted when their place was ready. the process was seamless and made our lives so much easier. after lunch, we made our way to their place and were absolutely impressed. the view is fantastic, the decor is lovely, and the building is really neat. everything is super nice and super green—an excellent combination. ruby and eric had maps and portland magazines awaiting our perusal and ruby's welcome packet—complete with restaurant recommendations, walking directions, useful tidbits and handy how-tos—was invaluable. we carried it with us all over the place and referenced it at least a dozen times. the location of their building, just across the street from the pearl, was ideal with loads a delicious dining destinations and easy access to public transit. we had the best time in portland and are now busy spending our days brainstorming ways to get back there!

  • My husband and I were in Oregon visiting our families and were looking for a place central to them, but also to have some time to ourselves! This condo was perfect for us! Ruby made the the apartment so welcoming by having fresh flowers and music playing when we arrived, Very thoughtful and appreciated. It was very clean, well appointed, an and convenient to so many things, including our favorite restaurant, Andina's. Ruby was very helpful with questions before and during our stay. The view is incredible from the apartment, but the rooftop is spectacular! We really loved the fire pits! We had a car and parking in the garage there was very convenient and not too expensive either. However, for those without a car, the Max is very close and easy to use. We would
    definitely stay here again!

  • Ruby and Eric are such an awesome couple - we adored them! We stayed at the 17th floor apartment during the weekend of our wedding and it couldn't have been a better place to relax and organize during such a busy weekend. The view is breathtaking, both from the apartment and the rooftop deck. The sound system was perfect for practicing our first dance. It was beautiful! Thanks Ruby and Eric for everything!

  • Ruby & Eric's apartment was perfect ... ideal location, very clean, lots of natural light (even when raining), fully stocked, great layout and plenty of space to relax and/or get work done. The views from the apartment are amazing and the building puts typical NYC luxury condo buildings to shame.

Ruby was very pleasant to work with and extremely accommodating of our travel plans.

The next time I visit Portland I would love to stay here again.

  • What a great apartment to base our weekend in PDX. Repeated trips to Powells, rambling over to the Alphabet District, and wandering about the Pearl and its lovely little parks were all within easy-peasy reach. And coming back to the light-filled, airy place for wine and dinner was a real treat.

The weekend started on a stressful note when our train from Seattle broke down and was delayed by nearly five hours. Ruby and Eric were kind enough to accommodate this snafu and even came to pick us up at the station so that we wouldn't have to walk to the apartment with out luggage. This act of kindness was above and beyond and and helped to put our heads back in vacation mode!

  • Ruby was responsive and pleasant to work with. Her home is extremely clean and the views are amazing! There were some really nice touches such as daily newspaper delivery and fresh flowers that really made us feel at home. The location can't be beat. It is walking distance to Wholefoods, Powell bookstore, food trucks, shops, restaurants, breweries, and Stumptown coffee. If you need to drive somewhere, there are 3 Zipcars in the parking garage of the building.

  • Overall this was a nice place to stay. It looks just like the pictures and has a great view to the North and North-West but it is situated next to a very busy freeway and noisy even with windows closed. This is a building with over 300 residents and has a nice workout room and lobby but be prepared to wait for elevators. It's also very dog friendly although I don't know the owner accepts pets. Great location and walking distance to restaurants and Powells and shopping. My concerns though, given the price paid, were the complete lack of anywhere to put anything. It is very clear the owner lives in the space and there are no drawers in which to put clothes. Also no luggage trays so I was constantly on the floor rummaging through my belongings. Same goes for the bathrooms. The guest bedroom has an older blow-up bed that was pretty uncomfortable; my brother ended up sleeping on the couch. The master bed is extremely good but had a huge wood frame with sharp edges; I have three big gashes in my leg.
The upside is there's a functioning kitchen and washer/dryer. The layout is a little crazy but liveable. Also, if you watch TV...there is none so bring a computer or ipad. The owner is very ecologically minded, as am I, so composting and lack of paper towels and such go with the commitment to stay here.
Overall, 3 stars. I stayed here due to the rates in the hotels at this time: Portland has not built hotels to keep pace with the tourism. But if I had it to do over, I will look for another property.

  • Ruby and Eric have a beautiful apartment and were generous to offer it and a list of "Things to do" in Portland with some great recommendations. I absolutely recommend staying here- the views are stunning and Ruby and Eric answered all of our questions right away so we never felt stranded. It was such a pleasure to wake up well rested and start the day with that view (and end the day with Lardo right downstairs!). Even the foggy days were gorgeous! Thanks Ruby and Eric for a great time!

About
Ruby and I love to travel - and we take any opportunity we can to take off! We're lucky to live in one of the most beautiful buildings in Portland, smack dab where restaurants, music, and retail come together to ignite the Portland scene. We're also fortunate to own a home in desirable Mt. Tabor neighborhood, offering a more group destination springboard to all points Portland. Both properties are available on Airbnb. We've lived in Portland for years and have a good inside view of how to access Portland. One of the things we love is to engage a city like the locals, so we'll help you discover some of the more 'hidden' destinations in town and point you in the right direction for what is already on your list. We hope you carve out some time to also take it easy. We have this nice little habit of buying a bottle of wine from Vinopolis -a great wine shop two blocks away- and we share it as we watch the sun set. One Friday night as we were getting ready to go out we decided the incoming storm was more interesting to watch. Our decision was well rewarded. Just saying... We hope you enjoy staying in one of our places -they are clean, sweet and both places are well located in Portland. If you see dates you need that aren't available, let us know. We're pretty flexible.
