This is the second unit in a property consisting of a villa ((listing "Unique 300 yr.old restored Villa") + Guest House, both estimated to be over 300 years old. The original structure has been restored and architecturally reinterpreted, incorporating both traditional and modern elements.
The Guest House is very unique in that it was originally the bakery oven of the village. In fact, the bedroom is the actual oven where barley rusks were made. Just off the bedroom is the bathroom. In addition, there is a living area and kitchenette with basic cooking facilities and direct access to the expansive terrace, shared with the villa.
The village of Mesa Gonia, or Episkopis Gonias, is very serene and tranquil, yet very close to Camari and the beautiful, black sand beach, restaurants, cafes, clubs, and shops. It boasts two wineries, and is home to the newly established Yellow Donkey Brewery. Take a stroll down and try out some of their great Yellow Donkey, Red Donkey or Crazy Donkey beer. Just down the road on the way to Camari is an utterly charming outdoor cinema, recently voted one of the top 25 in Europe. Besides showing the latest feature films (usually in English), they occasionally host live performances during the peak summer months.
Renting some kind of a vehicle is recommended (car, ATV, or motorbike) but local transport is available just down on the main road.
self-catering (no maid service)
The guesthouse (one of 3 units, next to a larger villa and Lianne’s own apartment) is lovely and tastefully decorated, with a basic but well equipped kitchen, separate living area, cozy bedroom (in an antique oven!) and bathroom. Outside of it is a large shared patio overlooking the sea, which was great to have breakfast or meals when we didn’t feel like going to a restaurant.
For us this almost felt a like staying at a relative’s place (but still with all the privacy we wanted). We really appreciated Lianne’s care and kindness, her recommendations of places to visit and restaurants to eat at, and being able to borrow additional kitchen equipment from her kitchen next door :)
In terms of location, we really liked being out of the busy towns but still conveniently placed i.e. 5 minutes drive to Kamari, 10 to Fira, and 20 from the very top (Oia) or very bottom (Akrotiri) of the island. Public transportation seems to be adequate with a bus stop nearby in Mesa Gonia, but we were happy to have a rental car to explore the island at our own pace.
All in all, we 100% recommend Lianne’s guesthouse for anyone who enjoys being in a quiet place but still very conveniently located to explore everything Santorini has to offer.
Thank you Lianne for sharing your lovely home and yourself with us for this time. We could not have felt more welcome and relaxed. As I said to you, I am a 'returner' to places I have loved. I very much hope to return to your place one day.
Alors enjoy! Anais et Thomas
Lianne was very very nice ! She went to the airport to welcome us & pick us up the day we arrived. We can count on her for everything during our trip! It was an unforgetable experience. The house is awesome, it is easy to get to if you have a car or it is at 5 min from a bus station.
I really enjoyed my stay in Santorini with Lianne. The house was perfect for me and my family. My boys loved sleeping in the oven! The view was lovely and the location was great - nice and peaceful, "real" island living. We decided to rent a car based on Lianne's recommendation (actually, we ignored her suggestion and upon arrival quickly realized that was a huge mistake) and was very glad we did. The best way to explore the island is with a car as taxi and public transportation options are limited.
Lianne was a great host and her island suggestions (beaches, restaurants, etc) were always on point. I definitely would recommend staying here.
It was wonderful to stay at Lianne's house. Lianne is extremely kind and helpful, always available when we had questions about the island, and also very helpful when we needed something. The house is very centrally located on Santorini, allowing guests to be away from the crowds as well as within a 15 to 20 minutes ride from all wonderful sights. It is quiet, peaceful and has beautiful views. We could not have expected more from our stay on Santorini!
Just as we got to the island, the powerplant decided to go ahead and blow itself up Al Qaeda style.... three days without power over the whole island ensued...
nevertheless, Leanne was there, to help us out with candles for the dark nights. We had a beautiful stay, chatting with her and - let's not forget - Trixie, the cutest dog in the world. The house is truly sensational, if you want to be (a little bit) off the beaten track and enjoy the island without tourists, this is the place to be!!! As the island is quite small, scooters are enough to get around, and you're never more than half an hour away from some very unique experiences. But coming home to Mesa Gonia was a truly unique experience, the quiet and peace with everything this wonderful island has to offer within reach, being able to enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace overlooking where the "other poor tourists" were staying, grinning at each other and toasting to being able to stay in this place, it was an absolute marvel!!!! The studio is lovely, nothing was exagerated. We knew about the lack of privacy if you choose you stay there with children (no doors, bathroom accessible only through the main bedroom), but still it was a wonderfull experience!! Thank you so much, Leanne, for your kindness and good spirits, we will be sure to visit you again, the children are missing Trixie already (they want to adopt her!)
