Our house is situated in the centre of Alkmaar, a smallish town just north of Amsterdam. Our street is a quiet side street of one of Alkmaars canals in the centre of town.
We all love to have guests and tell you the best places to go in Alkmaar, Amsterdam (where we used to live) and the neighboring towns and countryside!
Alkmaar has a historic centre with canals, bridges and characteristic dutch houses. Lots of things to do in and around Alkmaar:
You can hire a boat or canoe and explore Alkmaar's canals or the surrounding polders (country side) by your self, or jump on a canal boat for a boat tour.
There are bicycle rental places in the neighborhood. By bike you could tour the polders to see the wind mills, or the tulip fields in spring, the beach or the dunes.
We live in a quiet street, but in the immediate neighborhood there is a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Lots of choice within 1-10 minutes walking distance.
On fridays in spring and summer (april till october) there is a demonstration of old fashioned cheese trading on the main square.
Beaches and dunes are 15 minutes drive - or a nice cycle ride - away, Amsterdam a 35 minute drive or train ride away. Easy access from both
Schiphol and Amsterdam by car an good and frequent (twice an hour) train connections.
There are direct train connections to the famous Zaanse Schans (windmills, 25 mins) Amsterdam, Utrecht (1 hour) Haarlem (30 mins), The Hague ( 1 hour) Maastricht, (2,5 hours)
By car, or if you like day trips on your bike, you can explore Noord Holland to visit nearby towns of Haarlem, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Medemblik or the smaller historic fishing villages of Volendam and Marken. We can advise you on what to go and see.
I had such a great time in Alkmaar and surroundings. Jez and his wife Madelon were really outstandigly nice hosts. They provided interesting information about the city and the area and were very interesting to talk to.Even after a short time I almost felt like an old friend of Jez' family. I definetely want to return someday.
My boyfriend and I loved Jez' family and their beautiful home! We shared a lovely dinner and breakfast with their family and it was amazing. They are fantastic cooks and I suggest to share at least one breakfast and dinner with them. They provided plenty of maps and gave us ideas on where to eat and what sights to see which was very helpful! They helped us tremendously when it came to parking and helped us understand the parking rules. Overall we immediately felt welcomed and at home while staying with them and I would hope that they would have us over again! :)

Beautiful town, home and room. Lovely family. I would stay with them in a heart beat and recommend to those who want experience the Netherlands.
We had a good time staying here. The room and bathroom was clean and spacious. Madelon and her neighbour Stephanie are great cooks and we enjoyed the dinner they served us. Madelon and Jeremy were very helpful, and gave us great advice and recommendations as to what to do and what to eat.
We enjoyed ourselves, and would definitely recommend staying with them if you're planning to visit Alkmaar.
The walk to the house is over 20mins, but the view that accompanies the walk is spectacular. :)
We had a wonderful time staying with Jez, Madalon and family. They gave us a very warm welcome and were extremely informative about their area. The house is relaxed and spacious, quiet and very centrally located. We really enjoyed having breakfast with local cheeses chatting with Madalon.
Great location to visit Alkmaar. Highly recommended!
I've stayed there with my boyfriend for one night in August 2013. Friendly and kind big family. Nice accommodation, very close to the city centre; abundant breakfast.
Hi, I would thoroughly recommend a stay with Jez, Madelon and their family. The house is clean, full of life and Madelon cooked us lovely meals each day. The family are brilliant hosts. They are interested enough in you to make you feel welcome, and also appreciated our own need for family time and space. During our stay in Alkmaar we hired bikes from the family, which was great fun and convenient, as well as visiting the beach, going on a boat ride round Alkmaar and visiting a windmill museum. All of these things really added quality to our trip and our hosts were instrumental in making this part of our holiday in Holland a memory we won't forget.
We had a wonderful time with Jeremy and his family. He is a good father, I learned a lot from him, he is always paitent to his kids. The mother, Madelon, is also nice, we had a nice chat, she even told us a good place to visit -- de Rijp, it's really beautiful.
Their sons, Bo and Sam, did a good job as hosts, helped us a lot. We enjoyed staying at their place, would definately recommend their home to everyone.
Jez and Madelon have been wonderful hosts during our stay in Alkmaar! It's such a cozy and joyful home and it certainly soothes our homesickness. We really enjoyed having breakfast at the little cute garden! They have been very helpful in suggesting us routes to some less famous but equally fantastic spots/towns and their advice was really awesome! Thanks so much for giving us such a great travelling experience in the Netherlands! :D
We had a wonderful time staying with Jez, Madalon and family. They gave us a very warm welcome and were extremely informative about their area, Amsterdam and Netherlands in general. We shared breakfast and dinner with them - great food! It was wonderful to eat home cooked food like that during our time away. We also really enjoyed time spent with their four lovely children.
Thanks so much!
