Garden Home near Alberta Arts Area

House - Private room · NE Sumner St, Portland, OR 97218, United States

The Space

I am pleased and excited to announce that this house has been graced by none other than Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia for a sketch entitled "Rent-It-Out!" More Portlandia photos to come…

Cozy basement bedroom with king size luxury sleeping in a bungalow style house with gardens all around and an on-site ceramics studio! Lessons available upon request. Pleasant, quiet sitting areas indoors and out. Shared kitchen and bathroom. This will be a simple place to lay your head after exploring Portland's city, trails, restaurants and galleries. The ceilings are low in the basement (76 inches, in fact) and it is cozy, cool in the Summer and warm in the winter. The house is an Art Gallery, hosting Ceramics and Paintings at the moment. There will be occasional House Concerts offered by Folk Musicians. These will be community events and I will be sure to mark the calendar with these special functions.

This house is located in the Cully neighborhood, known for it's country-style living in the city with large lots, mature trees and plenty of gardening throughout the neighborhood. Our backyard is like a park in the middle of the city! Two nearby neighbors are landscape architects and do masterful works with their yards and gardens. Typical sounds one may hear throughout a day and early evening in this neighborhood are live music, children playing, chickens clucking, wood being worked into pieces of useable art, and more recently, two geese down the road. All of these sounds are pleasant and in the distance. We are near major bus lines that lead one straight to the MAX station. We are walking distance to New Season's, a natural food store, Common Ground, a relaxing spa open day and night, and the Alberta Arts District where you will find galleries, craft shops, restaurants, food carts, music stores, bakeries, bars, tea shops and even a Sake House! The Cully neighborhood gets the best of the city with park-like settings right next to a thriving art and Portland culture scene and easy transportation options.

I have been in the restaurant/hospitality business for over twenty years, love to cook, garden, share my abundance with others. I may offer breakfast/lunch or dinner if we are all in the mood. Internet available and updated recently so that there is full access everywhere in the house and a short distance outside. Access to shared kitchen, bathroom, living room. This is a quiet and artistic house. I make ceramic works in a studio on-site. I am happy to host you and pleased to meet new people.

The pictured baby grand piano is used by Portland vocalist Jonathan Brinkley to teach voice lessons from time to time. His sessions are playful, inspiring, refreshing, and benefit more than just singing. He is available should you decide you'd like an impromptu lesson!

  • We enjoyed our stay very much at Jennifer's place! It was clean, our room was spacious, and the location was perfect for us - a 15 minute walk from Alberta St where there are great cafes, art bookstores and icecream! Jennifer was friendly and helpful and the price was reasonable. We would definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone wishing to experience how people live in Portland, to walk through the suburbs, as well as get access easily to the many points of interest to visit in this city - as there are many bus routes closeby that connect to the MAX trains etc.

  • Jennifer is friendly. I can't speak English well, but she always try to understand what I am talking about. The room is cozy and charming. So, I would recommend this place.

  • Jennifer is a gracious and thoughtful host. The room she offers is comfortable and spacious; the household is hospitable, comfortable, light and airy. My experience was 100% positive. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend Jennifer to others.

  • I consider myself lucky to have found such a perfect place to stay while I was in Portland. Jen is a fabulous host. She's very friendly, accommodating and thoughtful. I stayed in her house for a month and had a very pleasant stay. The location is within walking distance of the supermarket and Alberta St which is a popular hangout spot and has a number of nice restaurants, coffee shops and stores. The layout of the house is open, spacious and clean. The room itself is big, quiet and the king-sized bed is memory foam and very comfortable. It is a basement room which means it doesn't get a lot of natural light but that wasn't a problem for me as I was usually out during the day and if I wasn't, the living room is large and sunny so I would just hang out there. I'll be coming back to Portland next month and the month after and it's nice to know that there is a perfect place for me stay when I do. I'm definitely coming back!

  • Jennifer was a great host. She checked me in with a lovely lunch from the garden and we enjoyed a nice conversation. She was unfortunately called out of town shortly after I checked in, however, so I can't say more about her as a host. The basement room is very large, however, at 76" the ceilings are low and there is very little natural light. Also, the unsecured wifi didn't work from the bedroom so I had to watch a Netflix stream from the back yard, which is a great place to hang out. The room mates are very pleasant, the dogs very sweet, the house very clean and very quiet, as is the neighborhood. You can actually hear crickets chirping away in the yard. Overall, it was a good experience.

  • Jennifer is a gracious host with a beautiful home. She's a pleasure to talk with, her art is fun to look at, and her tomatoes are delicious. The room is large and comfortable with a great bed. I'm glad I stayed here.

  • Jennifers place was a great place to stay in such an awesome city. It's walking distance from Alberta St which has loads of places to drink, eat and hang out, really cool place! Jennifer wasn't there but her housemate Leela let me in and was really friendly, told me where to go and even took me on a hike up the mountain which had a great view of the city.
Overall 10 out of 10 from me.

  • Jennifer's a super-friendly host, and her house is in an excellent location, is cozy, and is graced by her wonderful prints and wood-fired ceramics. If you're lucky, like I was, your stay might just coincide with a house concert featuring inspiring folk musicians!

  • Jennifer was an absolutely delightful host. My girlfriend and I stayed at her place for two nights on our way through Portland. The room we stayed in was large, her dogs were cute and friendly, and the bed was super comfy!
Jennifer is a very aware and caring person, and we would recommend her to anyone hoping to have a great experience in Portland.
    And her soups are delicious!

About
We are Jennifer Love and Jonathan Brinkley. I am Jennifer from Portland, Oregon via Salt Lake City, Utah. I am a ceramic artist by day and work in a local Southern Italian restaurant in the evenings. I love music and learning about music. I practice yoga, am learning about meditation and love to hike in the forest. I enjoy gardening and am currently harvesting kale and spring greens. One of my life mottos is to work hard and play big. Five things I can't live without: fine dark chocolate, kale, music, dance, and sunshine. My favorite traveling destinations so far are Sicily and Todos Santos, Mexico. Oh, how I love the desert, cactus and the gentle sound of palm trees rustling in the wind! I have a dream to run a large Bed and Breakfast, Hacienda style with warm desert colors, lots of tacos and homemade ice cream! Jonathan is a musician and voice teacher. Together we have traveled all over Europe sharing Jonathan's music via concerts in peoples' living rooms! We love to host and share all of our favorite spots in Portland.
