The Space

In the country but within thirty (30) minutes of downtown Charleston and the beaches.Surrounded by woods, very zen-like. Enjoy morning coffee and a continental breakfast on the front porch in a peaceful serene atmosphere. Are you a bicyclist? Incredible cycling area, past farms, beautiful marshes and the Intercoastal waterway. The only working tea plantation in North America is a short drive as well as the local winery. Looking for a massage? The owner is a licensed massage therapist and can arrange couple massages at the house. You get two rooms; one is the bedroom with flat-screen TV (streaming Netflix and Hulu-plus, the other room is a sitting room perfect for reading, doing computer work, esp. if the other person is sleeping. A private bathroom w/shower. (Very small tub). We are very comfortable hosts and we want you to feel the same way. There are good lunch resturants within seven miles and a great French and Italian resturant for supper within ten miles as well as an Irish pub.

Guest Access

Within a 25 mile radius;historic Charleston, the beaches and golf. Within a 10 mile ; restaurants, tennis courts, tea plantation, winery.

Interaction with Guests

We love talking with our guests and listening to their stories. We do respect your privacy also.

  • My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed staying with Ed and Gretchen! Their home is so peaceful and we got to experience a lot of nature every day.

From Ed's homemade bread to a very welcoming cat named Bert, they were amazing hosts and we would highly recommend them to anyone staying in the Charleston area.

Be sure to ask them about their various artistic outlets!

  • Our stay with Ed & Gretchen was our first ever Airbnb stay. They set the bar very high for future Airbnb experiences. Their willingness and availability to provide anything we needed was much appreciated. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat near Charleston this is the place to stay!

  • This was a great find. A beautiful house in a tranquil and atmospheric area. It has the feel of a quiet, secluded getaway, but the drive into Charleston is easy. It's also conveniently located for the plantations and some of the beaches. We made good use of the long porch, appreciated the great continental breakfasts, and benefited from our hosts' inside knowledge of the area and recommendations for things to see and do. Ed and Gretchen are kind, hospitable and friendly and we enjoyed hanging out with them on our last evening there.

We would strongly recommend this place to anyone visiting the Charleston area (if you don't mind staying a little way out of town) or needing a base to explore the Low Country region.

  • Ed and Gretchen were lovely hosts! I couldn't complain about a single thing. The room was even better than I expected, and their house was beautiful and welcoming. I often have trouble sleeping while traveling, but I slept like a baby in the incredibly comfortable bed!

  • My wife and I had a great time staying with Ed and Gretchen while visiting Charleston. Their house is located far back in the woods, down a dirt road, and is very peaceful (we saw numerous deer and other wildlife while there). They were very hospitable and welcoming, and we greatly enjoyed conversation with them. The experience was less like a normal bed and breakfast, and more like visiting old friends (they loaned my wife a book when she left). They give one end of the house to you, so you get a bedroom, a bathroom, and a study. They provide a basic continental-type breakfast, and are health conscious like us, so they had no high-fructose corn syrup in it. Wadmalaw Island is a beautiful place, much less crowded that Charleston, and was interesting in its own right. We enjoyed visiting the tea plantation, and Angel Oak is not too far from it. If you want to see Charleston, but want to avoid spending a lot of money or staying next to lots of other people, this place is great, and you'll really enjoy getting to know your hosts. They've lived in the area for a long time, so have a lot of interesting information about it.

  • Ed's place on Wadmalaw Island was quaint, clean and quiet. We enjoyed the short drive into Charleston under beautiful live oak canopies covering the road and seeing the IntraCoastal Waterway. Our stay with Ed and his wife was our first airbnb experience. They greeted us at the door on our unexpected late arrival and made us feel immediately welcomed. They showed us to our bedroom with separate bath and sitting room and introduced us to their cat, Bert. The bed was very cozy and so was the house. Sleeping in such a peacefully quiet environment was ideal for us. They had a list of local attractions as well as a nice breakfast ready for us the next morning. Our only regret is that we didn't have the opportunity to share more time together. We would definitely visit again!

  • Indeed a peaceful place. Ed and Gretchen are gracious hosts, ready with hospitality and conversation, but not intrusive if I wanted to be alone and quiet in the lovely space reserved for guests. They were cheerful in the morning as I left for the day, and cheerful and receptive if I felt like sharing my day's adventures when I returned in the evening. The bed is so comfortable, and the birdsongs so bright outside the windows that I fell asleep and awoke with a smile. This was my first Airbnb experience, and they have raised the bar pretty high!

  • We really enjoyed our stay with Ed and Gretchen. They were very patient with our schedule, coming in late and getting up early. Conversation was good, bed was comfortable, homemade bread was delicious. Will stay with Ed and Gretchen again!

my wife Gretchen and I have been married for over 30 years. As for myself, I am a peaceful, spiritual, happy to be at home person. We do travel but mostly by car. We are both somewhat Sci-fi enthusiast although (other then reality shows) we enjoy a little of everything on Tv and in books. We are not vegetarians but we respect people who are. We enjoy a glass of wine every now and then, but we are neither heavy drinkers nor are we "wine snobs". We enjoy food, but our meals that we cook at home are usually simple but on the healthy side. As mentioned we respect peoples beliefs and we are not judgemental. We both love good conversation.
