Lush on Lurline

House - Private room · Lurline St, Katoomba, NSW 2780, Australia

A private, luxury experience which is totally powered by the sun! Close to cafes, restaurants, galleries, transport and the Three Sisters.

The Space

LUSH is a unique property. A fully renovated, heritage-listed home built in 1898 in one of Katoomba's best streets. It offers every modern luxury combined with 19th Century charm and 21st Century sustainability.

LUSH is located in the heart of Katoomba's tourist area but offers a very peaceful, tranquil setting. Cafes, galleries and escarpment walks are all within five minutes walk of the house and it's just a short walk to the main town centre and about 25 minutes walk from the station, with a bus stop directly outside the front gate. The spectacular Echo Point and Three Sisters are at the end of the street - a 15 minute walk or five minute drive. Five minutes to Leura's wonderful shopping! Directly opposite the house is a popular restaurant and just one street away is an indulgent day spa.

Explore all this world-heritage listed region has to offer from this centrally-located cottage.

My guests are spoiled guests. Enjoy complementary local wine on arrival (well, after 5pm!) and The Sydney Morning Herald delivered to you on weekends.

Your section of the house includes a beautifully furnished, spacious bedroom inspired by India, Bali and Japan plus there's a touch of tradition with a lovely old brass bed. It has a generous ensuite wet room featuring a luxurious aromatherapy spa shower. A filter ensures your shower is pure chemical-free water. Walk through the French doors in the bedroom to your own private balcony with a fountain, lush ferns and a barbecue.

The bedroom opens onto a large lounge room with an open fireplace. Modern facilities, include BOSE Soundlink, CD player, large flatscreen TV, a selection of DVDs and board games and reverse cycle air conditioning. They are complemented by original features such as fretwork and stained glass windows and a very comfy, snuggly couch. French doors open out into the garden on hot nights and there are lush blankets and throws for the cold months.

The SHARED area of the house includes a large, open plan, contemporary living space with Apple TV plus satellite TV and a huge bathroom with a brand new, deep spa bath. In summer you can open the French doors and look out over the garden while you enjoy your bath! (It's very private and luscious "Cleopatra's bath salts" are provided.)

There is a magic deck at the back which sweeps around the house and is perfect for sipping a regional chardonnay at sundown. Here you can relax on the comfy day beds. There are built-in screens for when the sun gets too hot and outdoor heating and a table-top eco-fire when it's too cold.

The kitchen, for tea and coffee includes a Nespresso coffee machine, (coffee supplied), a Smeg retro fridge and filtered water. You are welcome to help yourself to tea and coffee but there is no cooking at the house.

LUSH is heritage listed but it has a contemporary style inside - you won't find the usual Katoomba chintz or gloomy, overdressed four-poster beds here! The emphasis is on good design combined with unusual antiques and objects collected from around the world as well as original artworks by local artists. 19th Century character is retained with open fireplaces, polished floorboards, wood stoves, intricate fretwork and lead light windows throughout the house, including unique Art Nouveau hand painted lead lights in the open plan area..

We are fully solar powered with 22 panels supplying the grid. A 10,000 litre water tank, six-star energy efficient heating system, on-site composting and organic permaculture vegetable gardens help us live sustainably. The garden provides organic produce for guests. Wherever possible, only environmentally- friendly cleaning products are used. Floor to ceiling insulation means the house is around 10 degrees cooler inside in summer without the need for air conditioning.

No modern comfort is sacrificed - stay warm in winter with the central heating and electric blankets, cool in summer with fans and air conditioning and safe and sound with a modern security system, in touch with fast, wireless internet and completely catered for with a modern kitchen and bathrooms - plenty of hot water!

But you'll be a million miles from the latest technology in our beautiful garden with its large reflection pond filled with lotuses and water lilies and 100-year-old tree ferns providing a home to native birds and possums. A sunny front porch is perfect for early morning coffee.

All around the gardens, front and back, are tasteful water features, stone walls and fountains and a wonderful entertaining area framed by an archway. There's even an old fuel stove converted into a modern barbecue available for guests' use.

A local bus stops right outside the front gate and sightseeing buses are also available from the top of Katoomba Street. They take you to Echo Point, Leura Cascades and the theme park Scenic World. Check my guidebook for local attractions, including where to see wild kangaroos. (I can take you there for a reasonable charge.)

Finally, this is a house for dog lovers. I live here with my large, exuberant, friendly dog, the famous 'Oi'. He is a real character who keeps most guests entertained but the house is designed so it can be split into two private areas. You don't have to see either of us at all.

CONDITIONS OF BOOKING: please read the house rules before booking so you know this is the right place for you! Follow the instructions in the rules to accept and secure your booking and if you send your acceptance with your booking request that will really make me smile! Note that your booking is not finalised until you send back your acceptance of the house rules and can be cancelled by me if you don't follow the instructions to accept. This is even more important if you are using "Instant Book". For those using Instant Book please note: LUSH is for ADULTS ONLY (over 18) and accepts no more than TWO people. • Jilea’s place is fantastic! We were warmly welcomed by Jilea and Oi, her very friendly dog. We basically had a whole section of the house for ourselves: a large bedroom (with a bathroom), a living room and an outside porch.
Her place was so cosy and comfy. Her attention to detail is impeccable and certainly made our experience unforgettable. From the porch with cosy blankets to keep us warm in the evening over a glass of wine to a fantastic Aroma Therapy shower and warm blankets for a cosy night sleep made it a great stay. Tip: have an early coffee in the porch overlooking the garden, it is so peaceful and relaxing…
Jilea has also given us some valuable tips in what to do and where to go in the Blue Mountains, important advice for newbies.
We highly recommend Jilea’s home and we will certainly be back (missing Oi already).

    Response from Jilea:

You are very welcome Kim and Joao - we thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and Oi says hi!

  • This place is special... We unfortunately only stayed for one night! Big mistake!
Jilea was a wonderful host, giving us helpful tips about the Blue Mountains. Her dog, Oi, was incredibly cute! We loved him!!
The whole house was lovely decorated and very cozy. We liked having a heating blanket. The bathroom was beautiful too with the aromatherapy- shower! We had everything we needed and more.
Thank you, Jilea, we will definitely recommend your place and hopefully stay here again some time.

    Response from Jilea:

You are very welcome Daniel and Julia. So glad we could make you comfortable for your stay.

  • Jillea's place was welcoming and comfortable. A very organised and respectful host, she went out of her way to make us feel at home. We had a large bedroom, ensuite and living room all to ourselves.

The place itself is in a great location, perfectly placed right in between the iconic Three Sisters and the town centre of Katooma which is only a short stroll up the road.

  • Talk about passion! Jilea has it in spades. Lush on Lurline is very professionally run and Jilea has left no stone unturned when it comes to providing for her guests. It was a pleasure to stay with her and her dog, Oi and to share our AirBnB experiences over a glass of locally
made Chardonnay. We have booked a return visit in May!!

  • Jilea, my host, was lovely. Her place is beautiful. She is a great cook and she is friendly, but also quite private, if you need space. I came for a breather, a retreat. I got that.

Katoomba is a lovely town and the main street is just a short stroll away, for food, drink, and whatever else you might be after.

  • It was a good location, quirky and homely. Jilea was hospitable and respectful of our space. The bed was comfortable but we couldn't work out how to use the aromatic bit of the shower (but that's probably just us!) It was a bit chilly when we arrived but Jilea responded by putting on the heating and showed us round the lovely house. We think as there was two of us she was respecting our space which was nice yet she was friendly and gave us a glass of wine.

  • Had an interesting time with Jilea and Oi her gorgeous dog. She was interesting and kind and takes hosting quite seriously to ensure that you know your way around Katoomba. She even offered to pick me up from the station and did drop me off the next day. Thanks Jilea!

  • My mum and I had a great two day stay in Katoomba. Jilea's place is in an ideal location a 10 minute downhill walk from the station and also a 10 minute walk to the Three Sisters main viewing point. Jilea recommended going down at sunset when all the tourists have left and when the bats and owls come out - DO THIS!! It's amazing. The bedroom is a really big size, as is the shower room. The private deck was great to relax on and there is also a separate sitting room for guests so it's almost self contained. Could be tricky to stay here for more than a few nights as there is no cooking allowed. Jilea will however cook you dinner for 18 dollars p/p. Also important that you like dogs as Oi is a large presence in the house... A very lovely presence but he is a very big dog ! All in all a great stay in the beautiful Blue Mountains.

  • Jilea ensured that our stay in the blue mountains was a lovely experience. The place itself is gorgeous, well decorated and homely.
There was complimentary wine with a chat and advice about the good places to eat out. And it was so nice to come home after dinner to a candle-lit room with a warm bed. Would definitely return for another stay, and recommend it to anyone!

  • A beautiful place, with a lovely host! Jilea was very welcoming, and has created a fantastic place to stay, with such attention to detail to make the whole stay brilliant.

Hi there. I am in my 50s, a writer, journalist, editor, designer and gardener! I love my friends, partying, having a great time whether it's work or play and welcoming people into my home. I LOVE to make people happy and relaxed! My other passion is for the native Australian environment and I try to live as sustainably as possible without sacrificing all the things I love in life. The garden at LUSH is designed to attract native wildlife, including frogs, possums and native birds. It's visited by those raucous vandals, the sulphur crested cockatoos, laughing kookaburras, king parrots and wattle birds. I also have a big, boofy, gentle, friendly dog called .... "Oi!" who I adore!
