Just let us know what you are looking for (Dutch style, road bike, mountain bike) and we can try to make it happen. We can also point you to fun bike routes.

Family friendly
We are very family friendly. We have two toddlers. See note below about Children and noise. You are welcome to use any of our gear, including a pack-n-play, strollers, high chairs, potties, books and toys. We keep a dollhouse and some books and toys in the apartment all the time. If you need any suggestions of things to do with children, please just ask. We also don't care if your baby cries.

Guest Access

The apartment is completely separate from the rest of the house. You will have your own kitchen, bathroom with shower, bedroom, and living room. You enter the apartment from a back patio entrance.

Guests will have access to a private back patio and yard that we use intermittently, but is more accessible from the apartment.

Laundry
There is a laundromat two blocks away. If really needed though, I am more than happy to throw a load of laundry in for you upstairs.

Interaction with Guests

I interact with guests as much as they would like. I love being a host to our home and to Charlottesville, and am happy to chat with you about things to do here. However, I completely respect guests' privacy and want you to feel you are in your own apartment/hotel suite and feel no obligation to talk in person. I appreciate communication via text/email, as I use my iphone a lot. Some guests I never see, some I see on repeated visits.

The Neighborhood

We are in the neighborhood of Fifeville, just four blocks from West Main Street (by the Main Street Market), a 5/10 minute walk to the Downtown Mall, and a 20 minute walk to UVA and the Corner. Walk to Amtrak and Greyhound. Right by the free trolley line. It is an eclectic neighborhood, fairly historic, gentrifying as more people want to buy close to the center of town.

Other Things to Note

About Us
We have a home building business focused on building unique single family homes on urban infill lots (Latitude 38). We are very versed in what's going on in the City. Joey is from Charlottesville and Jeff moved here from San Francisco about eight years ago. We love to travel and explore cities. We love to walk and bike, and love where we live because it is so close to everything.

Children
We have two small girls, currently 1.5 and 3 years old. The reality at this point is that for about 1-2 hrs in the morning and a couple hours in the evening they tend to run and around, bang and drop things, cry and laugh, and generally are hard to keep to a total quiet. If you are a family, we are a great place to stay, as you can make as much noise as you need. If you are sensitive to noise or do not want to feel as though you are part of someone's house, this is not the spot for you.

Pets
We have a 90lb chocolate lab named Felipe. He barks sometimes. We also have a big cat named Sammy. They will not be in the apartment, but are on the property. Let us know what kind of pet you have and we may be okay with him/her.

  • I recently stayed at Joey's apartment with my wife and young daughter and we had a wonderful experience. Joey was very nice and accommodating and the apartment was great. It was very clean, comfortable, and stylish, and is stocked with everything you might need -- from coffee and tea in the kitchen, to an ironing board and printer. Joey also has everything you might need for young kids, including a changing pad, pack-n-play, toys and books. We highly recommend it!

  • Joey was very gracious and the apartment was clean and accessible to town. Joey asked us to observe some quiet rules regarding late night gatherings, etc. Although I believe that request is totally appropriate, it goes both ways. We stayed two nights and each morning I was awakened by little feet running above my room. I love kids but I like to sleep until 8:00 am while on a break.

    Response from Joey:

As of Dec 1, 2013, our two girls are three and 18 months. We do tend to rise early in the morning. We try to keep it quiet, but they have hit a combined age that leads to more noise than we originally had in the house. I keep earplugs in the bedroom, but you should be aware that this is a very family friendly house these days. This does mean we are a great place for people with kids to stay if you are worried about your own children making noise.

  • Joey was so accommodating. We had a quick one-night stay. Place was comfortable and clean. Would definitely recommend this to a friend!

  • Everything was great about this apartment - clean, bright, well-stocked, and comfortable. It has a really nice kitchen with a bunch of condiments, oils, etc. and the fridge had some nice treats as well. Joey was quick to respond to my initial contact and got in touch to see if we needed anything. The location was great, in a cool neighborhood and very walkable, to the mall and its bars and restos. We only had to use the car to get to wineries/breweries outside C-ville. And Sammy and Felipe were both really friendly!

  • This was our first time with AirBNB and we are so glad we found Joey! The apartment was clean and convenient to where we needed to be (only a quick walk to the pedestrian mall). It was decorated well and had all of the creature comforts we could need during our stay. Honestly it looked like it came right out of a Dwell magazine. Joey was kind enough to leave her driveway open for us and we were able to come and go with ease. She had coffee, bagels, cream cheese, beer and juice stocked in fridge/freezer, so a quick snack or beverage was always there. Weather in Cville was AMAZING this time of year. We slept with the windows open each night Keep in mind that this apartment is the bottom floor (although private) of a larger home, so you will hear people walk around occasionally in the morning, but this was not a nuisance to us. Joey also leaves a binder on the table with her own personal recommendations on restaurants/things to do. It is worth a read! We could not be happier with our decision to stay at Joey's and we look forward to a return visit in the future!

Places we visited during our stay:
MAS (20 min walk): Awesome tapas and sangria!

Millers (10 min walk): Great live music and local beer selection.

Albermarle Cider Works: (20 min drive) GREAT apple festival was happening while we were there. We had no idea and what a pleasant surprise. Lots of vendors, but most of all apple cider tasting! Left with a few bottles and lots of treats.

UVA: Easy shuttle ride. We came to see our football team play UVA. Beautiful campus and very friendly folks.

Downtown Thai: (10min walk) Yummy! Try the crispy duck and the pepper steak.

Commonwealth: (10min walk) Excellent brunch and sunny spot to sit outdoors. Great tea selection.

BODOS Bagels: These were in our freezer at the apartment. SO DELICIOUS. My favorite is the Cinnamon/Raisin and their whipped cream cheese is to die for.

Don't hesitate! This is the place you want to be!

  • Oh my, what a treat it was to stay in this lovely guest apartment! Upon pulling up to Joey's home we were enamored by the interesting and eco-friendly design of the entire house. The guest apartment was completely private but to be honest we hoped to meet our hosts because if their house was any indicator, we were sure they'd be the kind of people worth getting to know!

My friend took advantage of banging away on the neat drum kit that was in the apartment and I took a few decor notes that I hope to implement in my own new home. There were snacks and drinks in the the fridge awaiting us. On top of that, the bathroom was stocked with amenities far surpassing that of any hotel (in addition to the usual, there were a host of products and essentially an entire medicine cabinet-- having come down with a sinus infection before arrival, I was delighted to see Benadryl, what a surprise!). The bed was extremely comfy and we slept without any disruptions.

The main part of town is an easy walk or drive. We were passing through for only one night, but lamented we had to leave so soon! We will absolutely return to Joey's unique apartment for a longer stay. She was a breeze to communicate with, responding to any of my text questions quickly and graciously. Hopefully, next time we'll get to meet!

  • This was our second visit, and certainly not our last -- super location, great space / decor (and always clean and tidy). Especially love the natural light that pours in early in the day ... Joey is a terrific host -- very friendly, helpful, and informative... Loved Bodo's bagels!
    Thanks, Joey

  • Joey's place is very nice and in a very convenient location. There is a private entrance and the space is very clean and comfortable. The full kitchen is also a plus. The only drawback is that they don't have cable television - my husband couldn't watch football! She was very nice and pleasant to deal with.

  • Joey was an extraordinary host. Friendly and welcoming and helpful and warm without ever feeling intrusive. Plus, the apartment is gorgeous! It's very clean and roomy with awesome furniture, lovely paintings of Charlottesville, and lots of light. To top it off, the apartment is a ten minute walk to downtown and a fifteen minute walk to the University, so it's pretty much perfectly located. I really cannot recommend this place highly enough.

  • Joey was quick with communication and flexible in responding to our requests. The place was beautiful and conveniently located between downtown and the university. She even provided us with a couple essential baby items.

About
We are a busy young entrepreneurial family. Joey was born and grew up in Charlottesville, just off of the Downtown Mall. After going to college in the northeast and living in South America, she returned home, where she had various non-profit and real estate jobs, went to grad school, and started a home building business with Jeff. Jeff came to town via Habitat for Humanity from San Francisco. We love to get out there once a year and try to take the train to visit friends in Philadelphia and New York when we can. Charlottesville is awesome, but sometimes you got to get out.
