Very nice accommodations, location and neighborhood. Very clean, functional and up to date. Quiet, just across a small road from the beach. Local beach cafes were convenient and friendly. Walked one day maybe 15 minutes to Pedro's restaurant and were not disappointed. Most meals we cooked in the unit, fully equipped kitchen and dining area.
Great vacation spot. Ideal location by the beach. Everything was as good as advertised. Jocelyn was very personable, charming and helpful. Appreciated her efforts and the efforts of the rest of the staff. The apartment was very relaxing and more importantly clean and comfortable. I enjoyed the nice comforts of the pool. Felt at home. Thank you
Christian was very helpful with any questions I had before my trip. The neighborhood was full of friendly locals and family gatherings. Even if they don't speak English, they are happy to help.
It's a peaceful location that has a nice pool and is directly on the beach.
I would highly recommend volunteering for a day at Dove Missions. You interact with local children and the real Dominican. I volunteered for the whole week, which is why I stayed in this location.
A few tips:
The advertised condo was 2 bedroom 2 bath, dishwasher, etc. The condo I received was 1 bedroom, 1 bath and very simple compared to the advertised condo that was promised. It wasn't a huge set-back because it was only me, but if you absolutely need a 2 bedroom, I would call Reina del Mar and confirm before you arrive. The 2 bedrooms I saw were much nicer.
The beach restaurants accept dollars, but I would highly recommend using pesos so you get the right amount of change and value.
The market in town is very small, so on the first day I'd recommend taking a cab to the grocery store in Puerto Plata. For 800 pesos they will wait while you shop and bring you back.
We stayed at Reina del Mar after finding it on Airbnb. The pictures and description on the site fit what we were looking for and the proximity to the beach was very appealing. The property is in a small gated community in Costambar in a quiet neighborhood. Upon arrival, we were escorted to unit number 4: a well appointed one bedroom with tasteful furniture. The only problem was, this wasn't the unit that we had reserved and already paid for! We were told that the unit we reserved was currently occupied by guests who would be leaving the following day. In an effort to "compensate" for the inconvenience of not having access to our two bedroom, two bathroom unit, we were offered a breakfast at a time and place to be determined.
The beach here is great if you like quiet, laid back and almost tourist free. It's just across the street from the property. We had a nice meal at Federico's restaurant on the beach, hung out some and finally made our way back to the room. We were tired and went to bed. The noise started early right outside our window. It was the generator that supplies power when the electricity goes out as it frequently does we found out. It would have been nice to know of this before hand. NOTE: Avoid unit number 4. The bedroom is on the back side right next to the generator and it's loud.
The next day we moved into our unit. This was what we had expected. Just as the pictures showed; 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a balcony that went the whole length of the unit with a table/chair set and a couch, a dining area off the living area and a well appointed kitchen. The master bedroom was in the front so the generator would not be waking us up. While this was great, we also found that the beds were very uncomfortable. We both woke up with sore backs and necks. Hopefully that will get changed in the future. Be aware that the unit is only cleaned once a week. Not a good thing with all the sand.
We were given information on various tours that were available, most of which we were not interested in because they were designed for larger groups. We did some research and found that we could do some of the activities on our own for a fraction of the cost.
Nelson was very helpful and Jocelyn was responsive to our requests. This is a nice place to come to relax and, with a few changes, will be an excellent vacation destination.
This was our first experience using Airbnb. I have to admit we were hesitant in the beginning but as soon as we heard from Christian within 24 hrs we were relieved. From the very beginning he was friendly and a great host.
Our condo was even better than how it looked in the pictures! The 6 of us were very comfortable and blown away with the living space! And what a friendly staff! Our ultimate fave was William, the caretaker of the building. He even loaned us his own dominoes when we wanted to play! We loved his friendliness, trustworthiness and how down to earth he is. Pamela is the building manager and was great too. She was very friendly and connected us with activities in the area. I can't forget about the fabulous cleaning lady, Melinda. She washed our clothes perfectly and the condo always has fresh towels.
This was such a great experience! There were only 2 more people staying in the building so it was very private. The pool was awesome and we could run to the beach across the street whenever we wanted.
