Pelekas, Peloponnisos Dytiki Ellada ke Ionio, Greece

Pelekas is a traditional hillside village and can be quite lively in the summer with plenty of independent travellers and tourists on day trips.

If you want to experience the real Corfu in a traditional area but still with plenty of tourist facilities and be close to beaches, tavernas, villages and the main town then this is the place to be.

'The Durells ' which was on TV recently was filmed and set on Corfu. The writer Gerald Durell lived on Corfu as a child and the home the family lived in is now a taverna called 'The White House' and is in Kalami in the north east of the island about an hours drive away. Many parts of the island were used in the filming including Pelekas and Corfu town.

The apartment is situated in a very peaceful, quiet area at the bottom of Pelekas surrounded by olive trees and the quiet, shared pool.

If you want bars, restaurants and shops then just stroll up to the village, it can be quite lively but still family friendly until late into the night. There is also a taverna at the crossroads just a few minutes walk from the apartment.

If you want to have the traditional 'resort' experience some days then you are only 15 minutes drive to Aghios Gordios which has lots of shopping, eating and entertainment facilities.

For culture, sightseeing, shopping, parks, museums and entertainment you are only 15 minutes drive to lovely Corfu Town, the bus stop for Corfu Town is only a few minutes walk from the apartment.

There are lots of lovely sandy beaches with facilities within 5 to 15 minutes drive. There is a shuttle bus from the village centre to Pelekas beach in the summer.

If you fancy a quiet night then you can walk down the road a few minutes to To Stavrodromi (The Crossroads) taverna for dinner and have a nightcap on your balcony before bed.

To Stavrodromi is just 3 minutes walk from the apartment and opens every evening in the summer season for food, drinks and sometimes traditional music. During winter it is open Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtime.

Corfu is our second home, we love it there and we have lots of information about this beautiful island and friendly people, just ask me or check out my guidebook on this page.

Pelekas village is a 15 minutes stroll from the apartment, it is a year round village so you will always find the mini market and a snack bar open even in winter. There are also tourist facilities during the season, travel agents, craft shops, gift/souvenir shops and more tavernas open etc. There are also bakeries in the village just up from the main square and 'The Witch House' which sells local artisan products.

Its a 5 minute drive ( bus in Summer from village square) to the sandy Pelekas beach (Kontogialos) which has parking as well as a few shops and tavernas.

There is a traditional costume and music museum just outside Pelekas on the way up the hill, it is open from 10.00 to 14.00 for a 2 Euro fee.

ATM in Pelekas village and at Markato supermarket 8 minutes drive away in the direction of Corfu town, on the right hand side. There are also ATMs in Agios Gordios resort 15 minutes drive and of course there are lots of ATMs and banks in Corfu town.

5 minutes drive away is the traditional village of Sinarades with bars, shops, tavernas, pharmacy and a folk museum. Sinarades is a large village with facilities in winter also.

Corfu town which has a population of about 30,000 has every facility you could need all year round and is around a 15 minute drive from our apartment, you can catch the regular bus into Corfu town all year round from the bus stop just a few minutes walk from the apartment near the crossroads.

The lively, family resort of Agios Gordios is 15 minutes drive, there are ATMs and a doctor there.
Please call into our friend's bar in Agios Gordis, 'Robin's Nest' and say Kelly and Joe from Ireland sent you, its family friendly, lots of fun and great drinks.

On the road into Corfu town, about 8 minutes drive, on the left hand side by a roundabout and signpost for 'Afra' is 'To Gefuri' a proper Greek kafenio with friendly locals and good food and drinks, again say Kelly and Joe from Ireland sent you.

If you fancy something different 'Red Chilli' is an excellent Indian restaurant in the resort of Gouvia about 25 minutes drive.

If you like being really close to a runway and watching planes land and take off head to Kanoni just south of Corfu town to 'The Kanoni Cafe', there is another nice taverna next door and a Sushi bar also. Kanoni is about 15 minutes drive.

Corfu town is 15 minutes drive away and is full of museums, esplanades, parks, shops, entertainment, restaurants, pharmacies, banks, main post office, cinema, bowling etc and it has a lovely Old Town with French, Venetian and English influences.

The Orpheus cinema in Corfu town shows films in their original language with Greek subtitles.

Parking is available in Corfu town near the New Fortress and old town for 3 euros a day, the parking lot is next to the harbour on the right hand side, there is a little kiosk to pay for parking on your way in. Parking is also available in front of Liston near the Corfu Museum of Asian art where the bandstand and cricket crease are but can be very busy.

The nearest large supermarkets like Markato (ATM on site) and Diellas are 8 minutes drive away in the direction of Corfu town. The nearest Lidl is about 12 minutes drive away near the airport.

There is an adequate mini-market with all the basics and necessities open all year round in Pelekas village which also sells cigarettes and alcohol. There are also mini-markets in Sinarades village and Agios Gordios.

15 minutes drive away in the traditional village of Kinopiastes is Tripa's Taverna, there are no menus, lots of different Corfiot and Greek food and local wine is brought to your table, tell them when you get there if you are vegetarian etc. Its well decorated with a lovely atmosphere and often has traditional musicians playing. Very reasonable prices. I highly recommend this taverna.

Lots of other great beaches within a few minutes drive including Glyfada, Ermones, Yialiskari and nudist friendly beach Mirtiotissa.

Aqualand water park is 10 minutes drive away in Agios Ioannis. Usually open May to October, lots of facilities on-site, great for families.

Boat trips to the main land, Albania and the small islands are available from Corfu port, 20 minutes drive from the apartment. Tickets are available in travel agencies that line the road just outside the port. Excursions and ferry tickets can also be booked at the two travel agents in Pelekas village.

You can take the small blue boat from the old port across to Vidos island. It goes regularly and takes about 10 minutes and is only a few Euro. Vidos is in the bay and is a nature reserve, lots of birds and rabbits. There is one taverna, beaches, some nice walks and the Serbian mausoleum/ war memorial.

The beautiful bay and resort of Paleokastritsa is about 25 minutes drive, from there you can visit the monastery high up on the hill which has fabulous views and a cafe.
Pelekas is a traditional hillside village and can be quite lively in the summer with plenty of independent travellers and tourists on day trips.

My husband and I love to travel, its great to meet new people abroad and at home, everyone has a story to tell. We live in Cork, Ireland with our dog Pete. Greece and Italy are favourites especially Corfu, Greece which is like a second home. We're fortunate to live in a beautiful rural area and that we get to visit other great places. Hope you enjoy browsing our listings. Kelly and Joe
