A comfy double sofa bed at one end of an open living area, with fantastic views over Wellington city and harbour. In summer you can throw open the French doors and have breakfast on the deck. The space is completely private at night.
**WiFi, breakfast and CATS included - and no more dog! Note this is a shared space and NOT a separate bedroom.**
Are you looking for reasonably priced accommodation close to the city? This is a 1914 character villa occupied by myself and partner Ciaran and our two fur children (Mogadon and Neko). The house has an open living and dining room and a shared bathroom. You will be accommodated in a comfortable double sofa bed at the end of the open living area, next to the French doors. You can wake up every morning with a great view over Wellington city and harbour (well almost every morning, depending on the weather!).
The space is semi-private as you can close the door to the other part of the house at night to have more privacy. There is also a small bookcase that partially screens the bed from the kitchen and dining area. It qualifies as a "shared space" because it is part of the open living area and is not a separate bedroom, however you are not sharing your sleeping space with anyone else. Myself, partner and any other house guests will generally be in the open living area until about 10pm most evenings.
The two cats - our fur children - are Mogadon-the-matriarch and Neko, the handsome Norwegian forest cat. If you are lucky, one might select your bed as their chosen sleeping spot!
WiFi and cat cuddles are all included in the price. (Note that cat cuddles can't be guaranteed. They will let you know if you have been chosen to receive this privilege). You can help yourself to fresh plunger coffee, hot chocolate or a variety of teas at anytime. Breakfast is provided and you can choose from eggs, toast, homemade muesli, fruit or something else of your preference. Note that we don't cook it for you though; it's a case of help yourself :-). Please let me know before you arrive if there's anything you would specifically like for breakfast.
If you strike a famous stunning Wellington morning (see photos), you can eat breakfast out on the deck in the sun, looking out at the harbour. Who could complain about that?
Check-in is flexible as we can leave you a key in a lock box fixed to the exterior of the house . Check in before noon will require payment for an additional day. Please check whether early check in can be accommodated before you complete your booking. Latest time for check in is 9:30pm. Sorry, arrival on late flights cannot be accommodated. Leaving early is no problem however.
We love living here; beautiful sunny Wellington mornings where we can look out to the harbour and see the birds fly out from the Zealandia sanctuary. It's lovely just sitting on the deck in the peacefulness of early morning, coffee in hand, watching tuis and kingfishers feeding on the pohutukawa and flax. Come and stay!
Guests will have access to the main living area of the house, including the kitchen, and a shared bathroom. Guests can store food in the pantry and fridge. Guests can also sit out on the deck, in the verandah (like a sun room) and in the garden if you wish.
There is no off street parking, but you can park nearby on the street and it is a very safe street. Many of my neighbours have been here for years without any security issues, and it is a dead end street so not a lot of traffic. I have never had my car or my guests' cars broken into in the four and a half years I've been here.
Interaction with Guests
My partner and I are quite busy people, often going to the gym after work. When I'm home I'm managing my various social and volunteer activities on the computer, or developing new lemon products for sale at the markets (my "Lady Lemon" business). My partner Ciaran is usually home earlier than me, and we both like chatting to guests whenever we're around. We are very happy to tell you all about Wellington and the different things you can do. We have a whole box of brochures, maps, discount vouchers etc for museums, parks, gardens and other attractions available for you to rifle through. Ask us anything :-).
Brooklyn is a nice suburb with a village and cinema only 7 minutes walk from our house. There is a chemist, good takeaways (Chinese, Indian, Burger Wisconsin, fish'n'chips), dairies, a small supermarket, DVD store, two pubs / restaurants and a Caribbean cafe. The cinema tends to play art house movies and has a great restaurant and cafe too. On Tuesdays, all movie sessions are $10 all day.
We love being in a quiet street, with birds flying around in the early morning from the sanctuary over the hill. We love the closeness of Brooklyn Village, with its art house cinema and amazing little antique store. We love being a stone's throw from the city but without the hustle and bustle of city streets.
Our house is on a quiet street that is close to central Wellington - either 10-15 mins by bus to Lambton Quay (a main shopping area) or around 30-40 mins walk. It's a leisurely 30 minute walk to the waterfront. You can check out the weekend markets, Te Papa national museum (about 40 mins walk), the funky shops in upper Cuba Street (25 mins walk) and heaps more. You can follow the road or you can take a track through Central Park. On the way you might take a detour to Aro Street, home to excellent cafes, bakeries and eclectic shops.
Often we host guests who are moving to Wellington or working or studying here short-term. If you are an active person you will enjoy the relatively short walk to The Terrace (CBD), Lambton Quay or the universities. You can get as much or as little hill climbing as you like, with buses for respite!
Other Things to Note
I'm happy to negotiate a good deal with you but please do not ask to pay cash on arrival, ie. transact outside Airbnb. Doing so removes the safeguards for both of us, and could get me kicked off for not following the host's code of conduct. That would not be good! In addition, Airbnb has software that blocks the exchange of email addresses and mobile phone numbers until a booking has been made. So if you try to give me your contact details before making a booking, I won't be able to contact you anyway.
1. Smoking: No smoking anywhere on the property please.
2. Food/drink: We provide tea, coffee and breakfast. Please do not help yourself to other food; and do not eat breakfast food at any time other than breakfast. You are welcome to use fridge, freezer and shelf space for your own groceries.
3. Internet: You can use WiFi at any time. Please note our internet policy: No illegal downloads (eg. movies and music) and no high data usage. The household has about 2GB per day for general browsing and email etc, which should be enough for everyone.
4. Heating: There are several different heating sources - enclosed log fire, electric heater, oil heater and electric blanket - that are available all year round. Please be economical with your use of electric heating, but make sure you are warm :-).
5. Security: Only the verandah door and front door are accessible from the outside. Please check that the French doors and the back door are bolted on the inside and all windows are shut and bolted if you are the last one to leave the house. Usually we will check all of this, but sometimes guests open the French doors to sit on the deck, or we leave the bathroom window open etc.
6. Safety: Please do not attempt to light the log fire unless you have experience with this (some people have never seen one before, and it does take a bit of skill!). Do not leave heaters or electric blankets on while you are out. We have one fire extinguisher which is located outside the door of the private room (our other listing).
7. Shared space: The open living area is available to all house guests until around 10pm each night. Please be considerate of other guests who may need an early night.
8. Must like cats!
Great stay on the most comfortable sofa bed I have ever slept on with the most amazing view. Caroline was friendly and helpful. Wellington centre 25min walk - bus handy too! Great location. All in all a good time!
We were welcomed by Caroline and Kieron, her husband. We arrived late in the evening but it wasn't a problem for her. She adviced us about places to see and to be in Wellington.
Muesli for breakfast was very good and the king size bed was very comfurtable. So we passed two good days in Wellington, partly thanks to Caroline. We think it's a pleasant place to be and to sleep, better than in a backpacker, cheaper than in a hostel.
Thank you LadyLemon... I already miss you, you were perfect !
Merci beaucoup Linda! Such a lovely reveiw :-). I understood most of it, but just to be sure, and for the benefit of future non-French speaking guests, here's what Google's free translation says:
"I had my first experience with Airbnb Caroline and I think I could not imagine a better start. House absolutely adorable, amazing views , cute cats, intoxicating garden and above all friendly hosts like we were friends forever . I felt very comfortable and never lost at Caroline because everything is well established with a clear manual. The bed is comfortable, very clean bedding. I could cook at ease , do my laundry and enjoy a strong enough internet to reconnect a bit in the world. The village of Brooklyn is cute but also very close to the Wellington CBD. In short, I recommend it!"
It's very good place ( clean, fun home ) and she is very nice and interesting ! Thank you again ;)
Caroline and her partner were great hosts! This was our first shared space experience and it was wonderful. The views are breath taking and the walk to town is a lovely one. Plenty of space for everyone and good company. Even ended up watching Game of Thrones episode. Can't beat that. We were fortunate enough to have wonderful weather which only made the entire experience even better
Caroline was a very nice host! She is a very helpful person and always there when you need any help. Thanks for that! :) I can definitely recommend this accommodation.
We had a lovely stay at Caroline's apartment and she didn't lie about the great view. New Year's overlooking the harbour and Wellington Central was amazing! Caroline was always very helpful and giving her best to make us feel at home. The interior is really stylish. All in all Caroline contributed to our great time in Wellington.
