Featured in http://www.airbnb.com/wishlists/secret-gardens!
We're in a prime location on the Ballona Creek bike trail, just minutes from Playa Del Rey, Marina Del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica and Silicon Beach.
Live like a local! We don't mind last-minute bookings, and if we can accommodate you we will and a delicious breakfast is always included!
Alors, Johnny parle un excellent français y habla OK español (para un chico blanco). Mark taler perfekt dansk, og OK norsk. Wir sprechen OK deutsche.
We have 2 guest rooms in our designer solar-powered eco-friendly house in Del Rey, close to Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Venice and and Santa Monica, both with a river view and you'll also be able to see Santa Monica, the Marina, Century City and the Mountains. If you need both rooms (we can handle up to 5 in a pinch), please be sure both are available (here's the link to our other room: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/593991 ). Both guest rooms share a full bath upstairs and a 1/2 bath downstairs. Parking is never a problem as we offer free off-street parking in our driveway for all of our guests.
This listing is for our larger guest room with a comfy queen bed for 2 (152.4 cm x 203.2 cm). Pricing is for one person per night with weekends and certain other days at seasonal prices; an additional person is $20 per night. Check-in is 3 PM and checkout is 12 noon but these times are flexible within reason; we'll try our best to accommodate you.
You'll enjoy a REAL complimentary seasonal vegan breakfast for you both with coffee, tea and juice, and which often includes avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, melon, cream "cheez," hummus, bagels, breads (often homemade), an assortment of jams and fresh fruit.
The rooms share a full bath with nice products and cushy towels. In addition to the breakfast spread (check out the picture) you’ll get super-fast wi-fi (up to 50 Mbps), a nature sound machine, access to light use of a printer, premium streaming TV (HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon and over 300 channels), laundry, off-street parking and the use of our beach cruisers all at no additional charge.
Our house is your house!
You’re free to hang out by the fire bowl and swap stories, pick some tiny heirloom strawberries in our front yard organic urban farm or just do your morning emails or read the LA Times in the backyard with the tinkle of our pond in the background.
You're also welcome to cook meals yourselves if you like, as we have a pretty large kitchen--sometimes we cook with guests and eat together family style--but whatever works for you. We even have a second BBQ for our non-vegan guests. And don't worry: we're non-judgy, non-preachy vegans, and if it's cocktail night and you're around we'd love you to join us.
Not in the mood to cook? Want to stay in for dinner? Let us take care of everything and have family dinner and drinks with us and experience Johnny's amazing vegan cuisine (if our schedule allows). To cover our costs we ask $15 for dinner only and $20 for dinner and cocktails/wine/digestifs.
Interaction with Guests
We are very fortunate to live in a beautiful area with great weather and you’ll be sharing our home; we never host when we ourselves are travelling. We love to show people why we love LA and we’re here to help you, and we want you to have the best time possible. We also realize everyone likes their privacy (including us), and we're told by guests in their reviews they think we have a great balance of interaction and privacy in the house.
Our house is in Del Rey and we’re super-close to the beaches, and there’s also easy access to all attractions in Los Angeles. Del Rey is an area with great choices in nature, culture, restaurants and shopping. We’re also less than 15 minutes to LAX but without the airport noise (it's a $25 cab ride).
We're right across the creek from the famous Ballona Creek Bike Path and it's an easy, fun ride to the beaches at Playa del Rey, Venice, Marina del Rey and Santa Monica and we have 2 beach cruiser bikes to loan (you'll need to provide your own safety gear (so please bring it with you) and sign a release before you take the bikes out).
We're minutes by foot (25 minutes) , bike (8 minutes) or car (5 minutes) to Playa Vista (Silicon Beach) featuring top companies such as "Bookface," "Yah double o," Microsoft, "G double o gle," Electronic Arts, You Tube, Deutsch, MTV, Core Digital Media, CybeCoders, ICANN, Fox Sports, Social Annex, Rubicon Project, Rovi, Belkin, XPRIZE, 72andSunny, EA Mobile, Ignition, Luxury Link, Digital Domain and the Institute for Creative Technologies. Note: Airbnb will not allow certain famous web companies' names to be included in descriptions or in correspondence.
More and more web startups and technology companies move to Silicon Beach almost weekly it seems, as Playa Vista is THE center for digital creativity in Los Angeles and Del Rey is its bedroom.
We're in a safe, upscale residential neighborhood, so you'll have the most fun if you drive and have a car and have a GPS. Of course you can walk to the bus and we can occasionally drop people somewhere if we have time, but seriously: it's LA and public transport really sucks. RENT A CAR and have a GPS. We have parking in our driveway if your car doesn't leak oil (if it does you'll need to park around the corner as there is no street parking on our street overnight).
Using our bikes is a great way to get around and the Ballona Creek Bike Trail will take you to the beaches without exposing you to much car traffic, but bear in mind they do need to be shared with the other guests and the bikes need to be back before it gets dark.
Guests that don’t drive get around very well with the peer-to-peer ride sharing apps Lyft and Uber and it often can be similar in cost to renting a car, but car rental is always best. Hey it’s L.A. and the car is king!
Other Things to Note
PLEASE, IF YOU'RE NEW TO AIRBNB: Before you inquire and you're new with no feedback you'll need a fully-developed and verified profile (including some form of offline identification), and please read the entire description. Everyone needs a clear, current and identifiable picture (it's best if you're a couple or travelling with a friend to have a pic of you both). Also, If you're traveling with someone, we need to know who they are and a little about them as well. Hey, it's our home. Please see https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/67 to learn more about building a profile with a photo and https://www.airbnb.com/support/topic/201 to learn more about the verification process.
We have two funny and well-behaved dogs: Wolfgang, our goofy 5 year-old Mini Bull Terrier and Hedwig, our bossy-but-sweet little Dachshund. Dogs are always a part of our family, so please love dogs. Please, NO PETS, (we've tried it and visiting animals are just too confusing).
If we're booked please check with our neighbor Dee who's literally across the street; she can handle parties up to 7 and will consider stays of 1 month or more. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/564078
FILMMAKERS & PHOTOGRAPHERS: After many, many inquiries we have to post that we do NOT open our house for filming through Airbnb. Our house is a real house and we live here with our dog and shooting can be very disruptive. If you are a serious professional please go through professional channels to contact us. Our rates per day: Live Action: $3,500; Still: $2,000.
We're honest and you be too. We're respectful of you, so please be respectful of us, and very importantly, our neighbors. This is our home and we want you to feel comfortable so if you want to know something, just ask.
*We live in a desert and California is suffering a severe drought. Please do your best to not waste water and electricity.
*Please don't smoke inside, but smoking outside is fine.
*No additional guests unless previously agreed to; additional guests may not check in before the Airbnb account holder.
*We live in a quiet neighborhood. Curfew for hanging out in the backyard is 11 pm on Sunday-Thursday and 12 am on Friday and Saturday. It's OK to duck out for a smoke, but please be respectful of the neighbors and keep voices down after these hours.
*Both guest rooms may be booked during all or a portion of your stay, and you will be sharing a bathroom. Please be respectful of the privacy and comfort of other guests.
*If you turn in for the night after we do please check that all ground floor windows and doors are closed and locked.
*Please be very careful with our house keys. We give keys to Airbnb account holders only. If you lose the keys or fail to return them we will immediately re-key the door at your expense.
*We're as terrified of bed bugs as you are, so please, absolutely no luggage on the beds. Luggage goes in the closets on the luggage racks. All beds are completely stripped and washed after every stay, the pillows run in the dryer on high, and both the mattresses and box springs are bagged.
*If you borrow our bikes you are responsible for damage or theft, and you are solely responsible for any damage to property or injury to yourselves and/or others. You'll need to provide your own safety gear (so please bring it with you) and you MUST sign a release before you take the bikes out and return by nightfall. Ride safe, have fun!
*Our sheets and linens are of high quality. If you use a hair coloring, lotion or oils that stain them you will be responsible for replacement costs.
*We will hold you to our published cancellation policy and it will be handled automatically by the Airbnb system, so please be sure before you book.
*For your protection and ours, we don't accept or extend reservations outside of the Airbnb system.
*Most of all, have fun, enjoy our home!
Staying at Mark's and John's an absolute blast and I strongly recommend to spend your time in LA at their place!
1. The house is a gem in the middle of Marina del Ray. Mark and John obviously put a lot of love and thought into the place which trumps most 5 star hotels! The bed was very comfortable and everything was 100% clean! Oh and the backyard is a true oasis!
2. The Location is ideal for travelers for leisure as well as business, minutes to the beach, really close to Venice and Santa Monica as well as the 405 freeway and LAX. You don't even need to get on a freeway to get to most places ( I lived in LA for a while and trust me this is a very big plus)
3. Mark and John are fantastic hosts I only staid for one night but really enjoyed my stay to the fullest! Both are very welcoming, educated and have some great stories to tell. We had great conversations and I already look forward to my next stay!
Warm greeting, good proactive communication. Lovely home, quiet, great wifi signal, very convenient location. Love the tour of the house and the outside garden. Hosts know the area well and are happy to help support a visit to this area.
Johnny and Mark were most accommodating hosts! Craig and I arrived in the middle of the night and they graciously let us in the door at 1:30 am after we flew all night. We woke up every day to a wonderful California breakfast of fruits, breads, and assortment of butters, coffee, and juice. Our hosts were filled with tips on free parking throughout the city, favorite local restaurants, and hidden Hollywood points of intersts. Their love for Los Angeles is infectious.
I had a wonderful, comfortable stay here and greatly enjoyed the company. Very convenient to the airport and great breakfast as well!!
Johnny and Mark were great hosts and made our stay with them very pleasant. They helped in any way they could, even far before we arrived. They gave us great suggestions on what to do and see and helped answer all our questions. We felt very welcome and well taken care of. Breakfast was great! They were both very patient with our little daughter of one year. We can only recommend staying with Johnny and Mark.
Johnny and Mark were so friendly and welcoming! They are really interesting and fun hosts, with an absolutely gorgeous home and adorable dogs! The backyard is stunning and a great place to eat the delicious free breakfast spread they provide in the morning! Definitely want to come back!

We're Johnny and Mark, a super-fun, committed (21 years and counting) and married gay couple in our early 50s. We live on Ballona Creek in Del Rey, 3.5 miles from the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. We share our beautifully and recently renovated home with our hilarious and well-behaved dogs Wolfgang and Hedwig (we hope you love dogs) and you're welcome to join us on one of our daily local hikes. We're right on the famous Ballona Creek Bike Path; you can grab one of our beach cruiser bikes and head out to the beach at Playa Del Rey or to the Marina, Venice, Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach.
We have 2 beautiful guest rooms, one with a queen-sized bed, the other with a double bed. We can sleep 4 comfortably and if you're more we can figure something out. Both rooms share a private bath and have premium streaming cable TV with HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon and super-fast wifi.
We're a non-smoking vegan household, but smoking is OK outside and non-vegan food items are OK too. We may be vegan but don't worry: we're tolerant, non-judgy and non-preachy vegans.
Explore Los Angeles (you'll always do best if you rent a car and have GPS capability) and let us insiders point you toward some of our favorite places such as Marilyn Monroe's crypt, the best views of the Hollywood sign, the stores where the studios sell their wardrobe collections, plus other places only real Angelinos know. We love our city and want you to live with us as a local, and that means if you're around there'll be drinkies on cocktail nights (Mark makes a mean vodka martini!). Of course, breakfast is always included.
