Welcome to Wellstone Center in the Redwoods! We're a writers' retreat center surrounded by redwoods with an ocean view. Our week-long writers' retreats provide an ideal escape for writers looking to develop their craft in a peaceful setting.

The space

Please read the full description of the Library House:

The Library House is our favorite place to be on the Wellstone Center premises. This newly renovated stand-alone cabin lies a bit remote from the main house and has no electricity or running water. It is the ideal hideaway for a couple or someone looking to enjoy nature and candlelight. From the porch of the Library House you have the most amazing views of the ocean below, especially at sunset. It's quiet and undisturbed there - here the world seems in peace.

Enjoy candelit solitude and the many books that we have carefully selected. We provide a propane heater in case it gets cold. There is also an antique washing bowl and pitcher, which can be used for washing one's face or brushing teeth.

Every one of three months we host a writer-in-residence at the Library House. This distraction-free environment makes it the perfect place for anyone who needs to focus on their creativity in solitude. Our week-long writers' retreats are an excellent cure for even the worst cases of writer's block.

The home of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods offers people who seek tranquility and peacefulness the perfect spot to spend a long weekend or restful week or two. We are ideally situated for day trips to all the magical sights this part of California has to offer. Up here at the end of the road you will find luscious flora and fauna, a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere and you can experience the best of two worlds: the redwoods that literally grow in the back yard and the ocean that is only a short drive (or bike ride) away.

Guest access

Guests are encouraged to use everything that our home has to offer, including:

-Swimming pool: Complete with several lounge chairs and comfortable seating, we encourage you to lounge by the pool while enjoying a good book (or borrow one from our library).

-Shared library: We have books from genres as varied as travel, literature, Buddhism, meditation, writing, and even some works by past writers who've stayed here and Steve (our resident writer and co-director).

-Fully equipped kitchen (shared): Complete with pots, pans, utensils, and almost any kitchen gadget and dishware you can imagine. There is also the possibility for BBQing outside. We recommend to all our guests that they - depending on their preferences - go to one of the great local restaurants close by or bring with them food that they can cook here (and yes, store in our fridge!).

-Private trails: From the back of the house you can take private trails through the redwoods.

-Bocce ball, small putting green: If you need a break from writing or just love to play bocce or golf we have both steps from your room.

-Pizza oven: Bake your own pizza! (This might require that you bring your own wood).

-Community courses, such as yoga and OpenMic Night, and weekend workshops on topics like nature photography or a "Find Your Voice" writing workshop with a best-selling author. For more information, visit our website at (URL HIDDEN)

Interaction with guests

While we do offer solitude, we also enjoy interacting with our guests when they'd like to be sociable. Your level of interaction is up to you, but we do suggest that you share any creative talents you have at our Open Mic Night on Tuesday at 7pm.

Please read: (thank you!)

We ask our guests to treat our premises, but especially flora and fauna, with gentleness and respect. We live close to the forest - on occasion a spider may get lost in your room. Please don't be afraid and forgiving... We put a lot of effort into cleaning your room!
To fully experience relaxation, we suggest guests refrain from using computers or cell phones outside. Please use your laptop only in the designated area in the living room (or your own room).
We hope you can understand our motivation for keeping a largely digital free environment - thank you!
We discourage those who want to have parties from coming to the Wellstone Center, but people who love to hike, to be out in the fresh air, eat wonderful, healthy food and live in a more balanced and aware life are very welcome!
Please take off your shoes inside the buildings. Ideally, bring your own slippers.
Last, but not least: Please clean, dry and put your dishes back into the cupboard or put them into our dishwasher. We really appreciate it!

Read the fine lines before you rent this room. Tons of bugs in the room. Door doesn't even shut close. Bathroom is way too far. Very old & rusty bathroom & shower. The place was too told. No electricity. No light. Only candles. Dark sheets & towels. Very uncomfortable pillows with shams ( no pillow cases). We ended up staying at an Inn. We just couldn't sleep there seeing all those bugs in there.

Great Experience to connect with the earth and disconnect from everything else.

This is an incredible, nestled space, perched on a hillside with beautiful views. We enjoyed the books and the solitude. The property and grounds are gorgeous. Sarah accommodated our evening arrival and welcomed us into the main home and kitchen. The Library House is a rustic and woodsy cabin, so keep that in mind when considering your stay. We were there during heavy rains, which may have brought in a few insect friends. We're glad to have stayed and recommend this space to folks who are looking for a getaway in nature but with modern conveniences a short walk up the hill.

The view from the Library House is one of the loveliest I've ever experienced. The lack of electricity is a plus rather than a negative--the warm candlelight and forced digital detox is wonderful. If you don't mind a quick walk up the hill to use the restroom and shower, the Library House is the sweetest, most peaceful spot you can imagine.

We are the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, a small community in the California redwoods seeking to promote an atmosphere of tranquility and calm, to bolster the talents and capabilities of people through workshops and author talks and writer residencies, including programs for writers under the tutelage of a New York Times best-selling author, and to work to make a difference bringing attention to issues such as climate change, respect for the environment and nature, development of the young, organic gardening and healthy, active living. We are accepting visitors through Airbnb for private retreats, offering an introduction to the beautiful setting in all its variety in the hope that those who are enchanted by Amigo Road - and so far we have yet to meet anyone who has come here and not been enchanted - will come back later to participate in Wellstone Center in the Redwoods programs and activities.
